lehigh university brown and white vol 80 - no 28 bethlehem pa february 7 1969 806-0331 ifc tables motion to end blackball by lou lightfoot at s meeting tuesdsy night the ifc tabled a motion for the second una which if passed would essentially eliminate the fraternity blackball system aa lt exists at the university john schroedel head of tha human rights committee who had proposed the adoption of an 0-a role to be ueed for initiating and/or edging as a separate article under the ifc constitution made two amendments to ma original motion instead of creating a new article the regulation would become section 9 of article 11 also ths rule sa originally stated required an 80 per cant majority for pledging and/or initiating as schrodel explained this would allow discrimina tion to bo practiced simply by abstention in voting be therefore changed the motion to require a 20 per cent negative vote for rejection of a fraternity candidate i mo di«_cßn g ceo out outright mp«*«££.c of any discriminatory voting there was some discussion to lower the number needed for rejection to 15 per cent but schrodel refused the motion saying fraternities can't be so tight and selective the system can be used to change the attitudes of its members and this is one way this can be accomplished several of tha representatives present expressed concern about the feelings et their national office on the adoption of the regulation the netteaale whose constitutions still contain a blackball clause are reluctant about granting waivers to their chapters especially if university policy does not specifically call for each a waiver in regard to this prof alvtn cohen advisor to the ifc reported that at a faculty meeting monday lt wee proposed that as s condition for operation st ths university s fraternity chapter must have local autonomy over its admission procedures this motion will bo voted on in april aad according to cohan there la no doubt that tt win pass he added that such a regulation la geared to allowing freer organization and opera tion of university student groups it was then suggested that a time limit for adoption of the rule be added to the motion preston parr dean ox stadeni ufa noted that this was done in 1962 when national fraternities had to conform to the pennsylvania discrimination laws he felt that with the university behind the regulation it would only be necessary to be reasonable and firm with the nationals to achieve their cooperation he remarked that lehigh has always been top u assistants appointed dr robert g jones associate professor of social psychology has been named assistant to dr w deming lewis university president for one year starting sept 1 1969 dr eric v ottervik former assistant to albert c zettlemoy er vice president for research at the university has been ap pointed assistant to the provost and vice president albert c zettlemoyer effective immed iately jones a member of the uni versity goals committee and executive committee of the grad uate school joined the lehigh faculty as assistant professor of social psychology in 1965 he was promoted to associate professor in 1968 jones was acting chairman of the department of social rela tions during 1967-68 chairman of the faculty committee on nomination and arts college representative to the college of business and economics 1967-68 he is currently vice president of the lehigh chapter of the american association of univer sity professors jones was also faculty advisor to the bethlehem tutorial pro ject 1966-67 and is currently project coordinator for the lehigh educational environment study in 1968 he won the alfred noble robinson award which is presented to a member of the university faculty for outstanding service and showing excellent promise he has been selected as an in tern in the 1969-70 academic ad ministration internship program of the american council on edu cation ottervik the new assistant to the provost and vice president will aid dr albert zettlemoyer dr robert g jones rhc signs al hirt grass roots barring last minute changes al hirt and the grass roots will perform at the residence halls council rhc concert march 1 before getting al hirt rhc unsuccessfully tried to engage the young rascals and then spanky and our gang at the same tuesday night meeting rhc president dan sassi said that he will recommend that fcc set concert ticket prices at s4 or 3.50 with a student activities card al hirt is charging 7,500 with the cost for the grass roots 93,000 counting arrange ment and maintenance the final cost will come to 11,500 in other business rhc has sent a delegation to a convention of the national association of college and university residence halls at california state col lege in long beach calif members or the delegation are mike berney brooks heller and bobmcgowan finally it was announced that student life committee has formally approved rhc's constitution at lafayette press conference morton globus 31,000 gilt te u endows major creative arts series a major series in contemporary crea tive arts has been established at the uni versity through a gift from morton globus new york city investment banker and arts patron dr w deming lewis university presi dent has announced that the 31,000 gift will be used over a five-year period and that the globus series in creative arts will be launched later this year lewis commented the university is grateful to mr globus a member of le ragh*s parents committee tor estab lishing this new program in the creative arts the performers and artists in the new series will present contemporary and avant-garde works from such areas as the theater dance music painting rums sculpture architecture and new inter media such aa electronic and kinetic shows fine arts prof lehigh valley called on whites to clean out their own house at a press conference tuesday night at lafayette the six students representing lehigh lafayette and cedar crest answered questions concerning the problems faced by black students st predominantly white universities scott williams university graduate student called on fellow blacks to understand then elves and then aim for the best speaking on the black's obligation to his black brothers larry lennon assistant coordinator of black collegians at lafayette said that " without unity we can accomplish nothing lennon said that white liberals should stop coming to blacks and asking them what they can do to help he said lt is the white's res ponsibility to change his own attitude and that only then can the two races get together and help each other concerning the problems of the black student in the lehigh valley ann hicks from cedar crest and tarry gill social director of the black collegians at lafayette said that social contacts are hard to establish gui described ms group's efforts to organize misers and all-black parties he said the chief problem is that there are more black males at lafayette than black female college students tn the en tire lehigh valley in answer to a question the panel unanimously agreed that interracial dating is not the solution to the problem regarding leadership of the black movement lennon pointed out that the goals of the black man are the same wherever they are and that ths only difference la th the question of methods williams said there is no one apokesman for the
