lehigh university brown and white 866.0331 vol 77 no 4 bethlehem pa friday september 24 1965 ian sylvia songfest set by dan gladding lehigh's first big weekend of the fall starts oct 2 when the engineers play their first home football game freshmen and upperclassmen have open sections and a dance in the university center upperclass residences have private parties and canadian folk singers lan and sylvia perform in grace hall opening the saturday activities will be the lehigh cornell football game at 1:30 p.m in taylor stadium lan and sylvia who are relative newcomers on the folk-singing scene will appear in grace hall at 8 p.m after the concert the freshmen will dance to live music in room 308 u.c from 10 p.m to 1 a.m they also will be permitted open sections after the football game upon proper application freshmen also will be allowed to have cars for the weekend if they register at the buildings and grounds office in the alumni building lan and sylvia are probably best known for their recent hit four strong winds which lan wrote some of their other outstanding tunes are katie dear you are on my mind bill martin royal canal and cruel mother they sing british and american ballads mountain music negro blues cowboy ballads and french - canadian selections lan tyson who is 32 was born in the cowboy country of canada the western province of british columbia once active in rodeos he was forced to retire with a severe injury at the age of 19 he then turned to folk singing he writes many of the duo's songs sings most of the melodies and solos and plays lead guitar sylvia flicker trained herself in music in her ontario home and has developed a unique singing style she plays both the autoharp and the guitar their songs many of which are written by gordon lightfoot are selected to express the feelings of the pair however they select only those songs which are appropriate to their musical style tickets for the concert are being sold by the class of 1967 through upperclass living group social chairmen by solicitation and at the student activities desk they are also available at huffs music store all seats are unreserved * . b a w photo opportunity knocks - seniors and graduate students who attended placement orientation meetings yesterday in packard lab auditorium will soon begin interviews with prospective employers 20 debaters contesting viet topic the annual williams intramural debate contest started last night with 10 two-man teams in conflict over the resolution " that the united states should withdraw all military personnel from vietnam the teams will go into the sec ond round on wednesday only half the usual number of contestants are taking part this year the contest originally set up by prof edward williams offers 300 in prizes to the two teams remaining after eliminations the winning team taking home 200 contest rules stipulate that the money must go to the living group of the contestants semi-final eliminations will take place thursday with the finals scheduled for oct 4 all debates ifc groups greeks to equalize visiting fraternity open house changes organization of a committee to in vestigate cooperative food-buying and announcement of a kick-off conference highlighted the initial interfraternlty council meeting tuesday in room 403 university center in order to equalize the open house visiting arrangements the 30 national groups were redivlded into three groups town houses houses on the lower slopes of the hill and those in upper sayre park an additional open-house week end in the middle of november was added bringing the semester total to three each group will have open house two days out of the six saturdays and sundays the three weekends have bean tentatively set for nov 13-14 dec 4-5 jan 8-9 a food-buying committee was organized to look into the possi bility of collectively purchasing food for interested houses with the goal of better menu-planning and better quality food a professional manager would be in charge of the system the repre sentatives said with the house stewards acting as liaison men between the manager and the houses in another area of the plan the representatives stated that enough profit can be made from vending machines to enable a house to finance a houseparty the committee initially met last august with two representatives of the pennsylvania restaurant as sociation which will act as the purchasing agents according to dave etzel 66 ifc president this undertaking could be the major contribution of this year's fraternity government the annual kick-off conference was scheduled for oct 3 in hotel bethlehem it will consist of a symposium followed bygroupdls cusstons and a dinner other discussion involved the possibility of expanding ifc week end scheduled for march into a creek week with conferences and debates on fraternity issues and problems preceding the weekend festivities and entertainment canadian folk singers lan and sylvia will give a con cert in grace hall on lehigh's first big home weekend of the fall during the afternoon cornell also in their 100th year will try to overcome the engineers led by former cornell coaches - . coach ed hamer resigning oct 15 coach edward j hamer is re signing from his freshman wrest ling varsity golf and cross country posts effective oct 15 the uni versity announced late this morning hamer who reportedly plans to enter private business in philips burg pa could not be reached for comment before press time william b leckonby director of athletics today said no per manent appointments to those posts will be made before spring temporary assignments to fill the wrestling and cross country posi tions will be made in the near future as coach of the freshman wrest ling team since 1962 hamer inspired three teams to a 12-8 record his best year came during the 1963-64 season when the squad went undefeated in eight dual meets four of the frosh were champions and three runners-up at the army plebe tournament that year the team included mike caruso one of lehigh's reigning national champions a graduate of the college of business administration hamer earned three varsity wrestling letters won eastern intercolleg iate titles at 157-lbs in 1957 at 177-lbs in 1959 and was 1959 ncaa 167-lb champ in gaining the national champion ship he defeated two former national champions and the pan american games winner while an undergraduate he also played varsity golf and was a member of beta theta pi fraternity he completed two years of active duty in the u.s army as a first lieutenant before assuming coach ing duties here hsmer ts married to the former judith ann kenney they have two young sons christopher jon and michael edward edward j liamkk gifts for year set a record the highest total in glfu and bequests for a 12-month period in lehigh's history was recorded in the recently completed fiscal year the 3.8 million total which does not include nearly 2 million in pledges during the same period was received from alumni business and industry foundations government parents and friends see 20 debaters page 7
