lehigh university brown and white vol 77 no 7 bethlehem pa - tuesday octofter 5 1965 866-0331 letter on mixer spurs new plan ' a new method of distributing mixer tickets to freshmen was ac cepted last night by the freshman life committee stephen m wilcox 67 committee cialrman ah arcadia presi dent maury poscover 66 announced the new procedure which is a revised form of the proposal offered by freshmen casey cogut and marty tuck?r in & letter to the drown and white sept 24 registration announcements for each mixer to be held under the new plan will be made one week in advance to the brown and white wilcox said the coffee house mixer to be held oct 23 with centenary and cedar crest colleges will provide the plan's first test a sign-up list will be posted at the student activities desk until 5 p.m of the tuesday preceding each mixer interested frosh must sign this list members of the freshman life committee will then randomly select the required number of names wilcox explained that the exact method of selection has not yet been worked out but promised it would be a fair one a list of the lucky frosh will be posted at the student activities desk and in all freshman residence halls on those wednesdays tickets will be sold to tlw chosen few all day thursday at the student activities desk any tickets not claimed thursday will be , sold on a first-come first-served basis that friday morrrng this method differs slightly from the original proposal which would have assigned numbers to each member of the freshman class before a mixer the interested frosh would have dropped their numbers into a container from which the designated number of tickets would have been drawn under the original proposal names drawn for one mixer would not be eligible for the following one wilcox said since only one more frosh mixer is scheduled this step would not be necessary he added that only 100 tickets will be sold for the oct 23 coffee house other small 40-frosh mixers are also being discussed by the committee with several girls schools they will be held later this wilcox pointed out that this weekend will be the first this year that nothing has been specially prepared for dining room from 9 to 11 a.m — an afternoon snack of pretzels and soft drinks will be served in each of the residence halls at 2 p.m — dinner will be served in the court and johnson rooms from 4:30-6:30 p.m the rnack bar will be closed between 11:30 a.m and 2:30 p.m to ac commodate the guests representatives from 226 col leges and universityies have been invited to the full day of cere monies formally inaugurating dr w.dem ing lewis as lehigh s tenth president among the college presidents who will attend are dr mason w gross rutgers dr nathan m pusey harvard and dr charles h watts buc knell stephen f.goldmann 66 senior class president will present the university with a 1,650 silver gold jewelled and oak presidential mace attending the ceremonies will be scientists , educators scholars and engineers from 49 american pro fessional and learned societies among the major participants in the ceremonies will be frank l magee and edward a curtis vice-chairmen of the executive committee of the university's board of trustees magee is the retired president and chairman of the aluminum company of america curtis is the vice president for public affairs of the new jersey bell telephone co thousands enjoy big red revelry by dan gladding cornell weekend lehigh s first big weekend of the year didn't take place exclusively in taylor stadium and grace hall freshman and upper class residence halls the university center and fraternities all saw action through the course of the weekend prof john s steckbeck grandfather of the freshman class had planned to start the weekend with a pep rally band and cheerleaders in the freshman quadrangle but rain forced its cancellation the cornell football game was disastrous for more people than just the lehigh team prof steck beck sang the alma mater at half time at a different tempo than the band not to be outdone the freshmen failed to form a funnel to guide the team onto the field joining in the festivities a large snaggy dog romped onto the field several times and bit a rotc guard who eventually trfed to get off the field illowing the game upperclass retumed to their living groups e most fraternities and re sidence halls had cocktail parties many freshman sections took advantage of the open section ruling and opened their doors to female guests from the time the game was over until 6 p.m most fraternities had formal dinners preceding the 8 p.m lan and sylvia concert in grace hall the concert sponsored by the class of 67 was considered ex cellent by most of the 3,000 who attended unlike most of the folkslnging groups today lan and sylvia with their simple non protesting style were acceptable to all lehigh students two bands came to play for the freshman dance held in the osbourne room of the uc how ever sigma alpha mu's band was soon redirected on its proper way jona and the wales a liberty high school group supplied the music for the free dance the rest of the evening the dance officially closed at 1 a.m after entertaining an estimated 150 couples most fraternities and many upperclass residence sections also had bands and parties lasting into sunday morning saw photo by doug casterlm williams debate winner ted brenneman 69 above and his partner dennis alexander 68 are both 100 richer as the result of their final victory last night in christmas-saucon hall the winners upheld the negative view on the topic of whether the united states should withdraw from viet nam two underclassmen win debate contest by neal arluck an audience of five observed the victory of dennis alexander 68 and ted brenneman 69 in the final round of the williams intramural debate contest this year's contest drew less interest than usual only eight teams entered the initial rcuaj compared to 20 teams last year on the advice of john zac harts speech instructor and debate team coach the form of this year's contest was changed the topic debated was -- resolved that the united states should withdraw all military per sonnel from viet nam judges for the final round were prof h bar rett davis head of the division of speech and dr j burke severs head of the department of english severs chairman of the wil liams prize committee presented the first prize of 200 to alexander and brenneman and the second prize of 100 to their opponents david poplel 69 and mike sil ver berg 69 poplel and sllverberg defended the proposition in showing a need for the united states to pull out of viet nam they emphasized the craig truax gop leader here tonight craig truax chairman of the republican state committee will tell the young republicans club about youth in the republican party tonight at 8 p.m in packard lab auditorium truax became involved in pol itics in 1956 when he joined the staff of the republican state com mittee as a public relations man in 1957 he served as assistant to the republican majority leader in the state house of representatives . since that time he baa held various positions of importance in the republican party he was elected to his present post in january 1963 see boycott page 4
