page six of this edition the brown and white plan to publish the full text of the sunday address by dr nathan m pusey harvard university president in a forthcoming issue by lynn havach dr willard deming lewis was formally inaugurated as university president at the inauguration cere monies sunday afternoon in eugene glfford grace hell before 2,500 persons at the ceremonies lewis accented the charge which itie trustees piece in my hands today with a greet deal of dedication to a job which has already begun highlights of the ceremonies were the inaugural address by jerome b wlesner dean of the mj.t school of science the inaugural response by lewis and the conferring of honorary degrees upon the three guest speakers wlesner pointed up the mag nitude of lewis task in coming years when he said we rejoice when an outstanding leader accepts the almost overwhelming task of capably guiding a modern univer sity speaking on " the universities role in the scientific revolution he said our material interests must be counter balanced by non material interests if we ere to avoid becoming victims of our good fortunes he concluded the ineugurel address by emphasising the fact that teaching should be one of our most rewarding professions because more then ever our future ls in the hands of those who educate our children in a brief but direct inaugural response see text pege 6 lewis program for lehigh we will toll st the cultiva tion and hops that the harvest ls dr glenn j christensen provost end vice-president pre sented the three guest speakers to lewis to receive their honorary degrees these were the rt hon lord shawcross queen's counselor end privy counselor dr jerome b wlesner and dr nathan m pusey president of harvard university " the three men whom wo honor today each in his own way exemplifies the role of the university in tne world the university is deeply gratified to confer honorary degrees upon these scholars christensen said following the invocation by the b aw photo by 808 butt president w deming lewis 237 degrees conferred honorories to nine dr w deming lewis univer sity president conferred 237 degrees upon graduates at the 87th founder's day ceremonies sunday morning in grace hall before more than 1,000 persons lewis told the graduates " you are looking two ways first beck on what you have done and second ahead to what you will be doing " the university is also locking two ways lewis added it is looking back on its first 100 years since its founding in 1865 by asa packer and it is looking ahead to its next 100 years when we hope to carry out asa packer's dream the commencement activities were highlighted by an address by the rt hon lord shawcross chancellor of sussex university in england the conferrence of hon orary degrees upon six lehigh alumni and the presentation of the university mace which was accepted for the board of trustees by the second vice chairman of board edward a curtis lord shawcross said " a society will not survive if it cannot cope with current changes therefore it develops institutions to handle these changes the university ls the most important of these institutions he added it is here that the controversy develops and out of controversy comes understand ing he pointed out that " universities must not allow the pressures of the scientific age to prevent our students from becoming what society needs more than mere scholars and that need ls en lightened citizens capable of making objective judgments he concluded by explaining " be still and know should be the motto of the modern university dr glenn j christensen provost and vice president in a short address proceeding the con ference of honorary degrees upon six lehigh alumni said the pur pose of the university in forming well-rounded men was established 100 years ago since then our methods may have changed somewhat but our purpose has never changed it therefore seems fitting that we confer honorary degrees upon six of our alumni who have fulfilled that purpose he added u will expand fields of viable opportunity by brad grissinger lehigh's role as a developing university was the theme of the inaugural response given by dr w deming lewis sunday as he was formally installed as lehigh's 10th president dr lewis pointed out that a university has a complex and crucial role in society today he also stated that although lehigh ls a private university it still has a public obligation lewis explained some of the changes and reasons for these changes that have been made at lehigh in the past few years the changes made in the graduate school received special attention because there is a tremendous and growing need for graduate programs ... particularly in engineering and science where lehigh has great strength he indicated that there are dangers in expanding a graduate program especially for a private university of modest size and endowment he then gave ways in which these dangers can be avoided . one of these ways was to expand rapidly in a few fields which have unusual opportunities the first field in which lehigh has expanded is in the application of mathematics as can be seen in the new university center for the application of mathematics this field is already important in the physical sciences and in engineering he said and is becoming important in social sciences and business administration another field which is expanding rapidly at lehigh is education this expansion ls in response to the intense demand for more well trained administrators and teachers for primary and secondary schools he explained dr lewis also said alumni can be of help in several ways one of these is by serving on the board of trustees and on projects such as the centennial campaign a second way is by establishing a closer contact with the academic activities of the university he noted the new president emphasized the fact that students should be aware of the outside world and conversely the outside world should be aware of the activities of the university in closing dr lewis said these thoughts are the seeds of a program for lehigh we will toil at the cultivation and hope that the harvest is good following the inauguration lewis told a reporter at the reception in the university center that the students are implicit in everything i said in the speech he said he enjoyed getting exercises in grace hail beyond the brink of death and back dozens of academically garbed marchers in the inaugural pro cession witnessed one of their dis tinguished number go just beyond the brink of death sunday — and return the color guard at the head of the line of marchers had reached grace hall when 84 year-old samuel t harleman ol the dele gate of tau beta pi collapsed on the road between the library and williams hall less than 100 feet from the engineering honor society's monument harleman a figure on campus for 68 years was in critical con dition in st luke's hospital this afternoon as this issue went to press although he was legally dead twice before he was admitted to the hospital attending doctors told the brown and white quick-thinking marchers,cam pus police bystanders and four doctors combined toaidharleman whose heart stopped beating for some 12 minutes until he was taken to the hospital as harleman fell george e kane professor of industrial en gineering and joseph a maurer professor of classics who were > marching in the procession near him summoned help from the campus police car which was less than 50 feet away on memorial drive calling for an ambulance the patrol car radioed bethlehem police headquarters which in turn radioed st luke's kane then ran to the head of the procession for dr frances c schaeffer the delegate of bryn see seniors page 10 see
