brown and white 866-0331 vol 77 - no 12 bethlehem pa - friday october 22 1965 met-chem lab named for whitaker the aftim of the tatte dr martin d wtai taker university president from 1946 until 1960 hu been mind to the 2.75 million metallurgical and chemical engineering building dr w deming lewis silver sit y president and mj rathbone president of the board of trustees announced this afternoon that the martin dewey whltaker ' metallurgical and chemical engineering building 1 will be ready for occupancy later this fall begun m may t m 4 the five story building will be formally dedicated m the spring dr whltaker directed the establishment of the first atomic power plant designed for peacetime purposes at oak ridge between 1043 and im6 he began work on atomic projects one month after the japanese attack on pearl harbor the engineering complex named after him is part of the 922 million centennial campaign which was started june 6 1959 under whltaker's presidency other centennial campaign plans include construction of a residence hall for graduate students and a 1.5 million hall of liberal arts whltaker served as eighth president of lehigh guiding the university through the nations post-war adjustment and through an unprecedented period of growth and prosperity during his administration lemgh's total assets almost tripled endowment was more than doubled and sponsored research at the university was increased four times also under ms leadership the teaching faculty was enlarged the physical plant enlarged and many new developments in undergraduate and graduate programs underta his association with atomic energy began when he was summoned to the university of chicago m january of 1942 m 1943 he was appointed director of the clinton laboratories at oak ridge term where he overlooked plutonlum development through its early stares and w!inftte4 the design operation and construction of what was to be the first peacetime atomic energy plant at oak ridge he remained at oak ridge until he assumed the lehigh presidency m 1946 serving m varying capacities m the bethlehem community chest historic bethlehem tec the bethlehem chamber of commerce and the bethlehem rotary club he was the lehigh valley director of the korea society an international friendship organisation endorsed by president elsenhower whltaker held both state and national posts with educational organisations including presidency of the pennsylvania association of colleges and universities the american society far engineering education the governor's state planning board for the state of pennsylvania and the national commission of accrediting whltaker earned his bachelor of arts degree from wake forest college in 1927 his master's degree from the university of north carolina m 1930 and his doctorate from new york university five years later he also received honorary degrees from lafayette college moravian college rutgers university and wake forest college he was acting chairman of the department of physics at new york university when he was summoned to chicago m 1942 honor system ballot is approved by solons by neal arluck arcadia has taken the first step toward an honor system at lehigh by a vote of 13-0 the arcadians put their support behind a student referendum on the system the referendum will be held during the december election before the vote was taken james becker head of the student rights committee reported that the pro posal he had submitted to arcadia last week had been warmly received by many facutly mem bers maury poscover arcadia pres ident emphasized that the arcadians were not voting on any particular honor system but that they were merely voting on whether or not to put such a system before the students for a vote william f mor 66 chairman of the arcadia associates foreign opportunities committee report ed on a tentative proposal for study abroad it was described as an attempt to increase educa tional opportunities for lehigh students through study at some european university the lehigh sailing club asked arcadia for 100 to help defray the cost of participation m a three day regatta by 10 lehigh students to the u s naval academy a motion to appropriate the funds was approved 14-1 on the suggestion of treasurer stew early 100 was appropriated for the course evaluation booklet poscover announced that work on the booklet is progressing smo othly and that it will be on sale the first week m november arcadia passed unanimously a motion by safety committee chair man martin cohen that arcadia make a recommendation to the faculty committee on safety to consider the specific safety problems of altering the remaining tank traps and placing reflectors along the sayre park roads poscover announced that ar cadia would make campus safety its priority concern m the near future b aw photo he is ugly -
