brown and white 866-0331 vol 77 no 14 wkwtmmvlmmkmwmm bethlehem pa - friday october 29 1965 — — a^^aaaaa ed program to change the pennsylvania department of public instruction dpi has granted the university freedom to ex periment with previously untried methods of teacher education and to further develop the graduate de gree - only professional approach to training elementary and secondary school teachers effective immediately and extended for a period of seven years the dpi has authorized the education department to eliminate from its teacher education program all the courses which are otherwise mandatory throughout the commonwealth for state certification of elementary and secondary school teachers the university will be permitted to use its own graduate-degree program in place of the state requirements or it may modify these requirements during this 7 year period the dpi has also authorized lehigh to conduct an extensive exper imentation program in conjunction with the state bureau of teacher education dpi personnel and visiting committees will periodically be sent here for conferences and observation of the program in announcing this action late yesterday uni versity president dr w doming lewis said lehigh regards this joint effort between the university and the pennsylvania department of public instruction as a large step forward in the development of a number of varied and forward looking ideas we welcome this opportunity and challenge that will serve higher education in general and the preparation of future teachers in particular using the master's program as a model and base this experimentation will seek better methods of teacher education as well as improvement of present patterns of teacher education . in addition to the complete freedom to experiment over a long period of time the dpi has given lehigh the sole responsibility of recommending its master degree recipients for state certification as teachers the commonwealth will automatically dartmouth gains revenge at last nineteen years is a long time to wait for revenge but the editorial staff of the darmouth was willing to bide its time and on sunday the wait was rewarded it happened like this back in 1946 the harvard crim son distributed a bogus edition of the dartmouth announcing hi the eve of the harvard - dartmouth football game that seven of the dartmouth players had been stricken by food poisoning even though members of the current newspaper staff at dart mouth were in short pants at the time the hoax was not forgotten so on sunday morning harvard students learned that harvard was giving up intercollegiate football or so it seemed but it was simply dartmouth's during the night staff members of the dartmouth had distributed to harvard and radcliffe dormi tories copies of a single-sheet extra of the crimson the bogus issue quoted harvard president nathan m pusey as saying that the university's board of over seers had approved a decision to discontinue football at the end of the season apparently not too many harvard students were fooled about 30 of them called the crimson con cerning the article some simply wanted to confirm that the whole thing was a hoax others admitted that they had been taken in like the harvard joke of 19 years ago this one was linked to the harvard -
