7,200 widely ranging program aimed at all phases of university life from the academic to the athletic and in cluding a myriad of cultural artistic and religious activities in between although each separate activity provi<e»vi a wpii grounded repre sentation within its own scope the turnau opera players pre sentation of the comic opera " don pasquale overstepped its bounds and emerged aa the outstanding event of the weekends activities other activities saturday includ ed the convocations for the colleges of business administration arts and science and engineering an informal luncheon for the guests students and faculty members in grace hall and a freshman foot ball game between lehigh and the university of pennsylvania speaking before each of the three college convocations university president dr w demlng lewis keynoted the trend to be followed during the two-day ceremonies " this is a weekend whereby the parents of our freah man class are afforded the opportunity of be coming better acquainted with their son's university and especially better acquainted with his field of study and the lehigh faculty lewis asserted w g succop president of the american roller bearing company of pittsburg and recently-elected chairman oi the leiugli fi.r.»r.ts committee pointed out the res ponsibility of the committee and further emphasized lewis's claim the committee he stated provides the chance for the inter change of ideas among the parents the students and the faculty in the hopes of attaining the highest degree of rapport which la neces sary if a university la to function efficiently a discussion of the major fields of public accounting--computers taxation management services and governmental accounting was featured at the business adminis tration convocation 1 drown hall participants in the discussions before nearly 125 persona included dr l reed tripp dean of the b&w photo by doug casterlin dean w ross yates head of the arts and science college speaks on the work of the college before 300 freshman parents and guests at the arts convocation saturday listen ing are ralph van arnum right and sidney s herman thomas outlines views by ira dember a special " focus on civil liberties was held last weekend at the university of pennsylvania highlighted by a number of well known speakers including nor man thomas who is scheduled to debate william f buckley here dec 6 senators jacob javits r..n.y and strom thurmond r.,s.c officially called the rights of man 1965 civil liberties in modern america conference speakers discussed different as pects of civil liberties in america today norman thomas outspoken socialist and six-time candidate for the presidency on the socialist party ticket outlined his socialist views with respect to current social economic and political problems of the world " poverty is theoretically at least unnecessary he said " the everlasting disgrace of humanity is the federal government's sub sidies for crop reduction in a hungry world and he continued " . , the disgrace of our affluent society is the poor in the midst of plenty putting forth his four point program to improve world con ditions thomas planned universal disarmament admission of red china to the united nations re duction of the influence of the united states in world military crises and more u.s economic foreign aid communism he said will not be crushed by any military power but is now evolving away from the original hard-line doc trines he stated although thomas is a socialist he has been anti communlst since the mid 1 930 s the war in viet nam is in evitably cruel he said " this is a guerilla war fought with air power it is one of cruelty and debasement of the better side of people thomas quipped seriously about ujs policy toward the viet cong " they better realize they'd be better dead than red if they don't we'll help them 3 uds warnings given 5 students for infractions this year's first disciplinary report for september and october has been released in a composite report by the dean of students dean of student life director of residence halls and the com mittee on discipline a sophomore was assessed one university demerit and continued under sophomore regulations through the fall semester 1966 for violation of the university regulation prohibiting a sophomore with less than a 1.5 cumulative average from use of a motor vehicle on university property one student was assessed a demerit for disregard of the uni versity's prohibition of explosives on university property two students were warned and formally reprimanded for violation of residence halls regulations pro hibiting women guests in the dormitories one disciplinary demerit was assessed a student tor falsification of the record when registering a activities starting tomorrow to run for arcadia one must be an undergraduate as determined by the registrar he must have at least two remaining semesters as a regularly matriculated under graduate at the time of the election he must have spent at least one full semester at lehigh and mu t not be on disciplinary or scholastic probation at the time of the election petitions must be returned to the student activities desk bv 4 p.m nov 22 the elections will be held dec 7 8 and 9 in the university center between 9 a.m and 5 p.m the candidates will he allowed to present their platforms in short speeches in room 308 of the u c at 7:30 p.m dec 6 preregistration for this spring now underway this is the week to choose between underwater basket weav lng and physical education 14 according to james h wagner university registrar;preregistra tion for next semester's courses began yesterday students should check their curriculum director's bulletin board fur specific instructions on preregistration any student with a valid reason for requesting special scheduling should consult the office of the dean of students now and complete the formal request for special scheduling freshman
