lehigh university brown ana white mammmmmmmmmmmmmm vol 77 no 17 866-0331 bethlehem pa - friday november 12,1965 prof opinions differ on evaluation booklet by tom roberts lehigh's own 44-page bomb shell the student evaluation com mittee's supplement to the university catalog went on sale wednesday afternoon the book was published by the evaluation committee under the direction of omicron delta kappa senior leadership honorary all write-ups in the booklet were done by honor students using answers submitted on questionnaires that were distributed to a percentage of students taking each course faculty opinion of the booklet varied widely some favoring the evaluations as helpful to both teacher and student others ques tioning the purpose and quality of the evaluations most professors contacted had not seen the booklet prior to lielng contacted by the brown and white last wednesday evening ' dr alvin cohen assistant pro fessor of economics wondered about the ability of the people making the evaluations cohen said he was not opposed to student evaluations but would like to see a system sorh as that used at yale at yale only honor stu dents make the evaluations he added that there is not much value in the present system you should have some set system with known standards that could be improved upon he concluded that when someone is on trial he likes to know who is accusing him and what the evidence ls dean w ross yates dean of the college f arts & science and professor of government said the comments in the booklet about him were " very flattering dean yates added that the evaluation could bf misleading as the course is changed from year to year he also posed the question how do vou know you have had a repre sentative opinion f yates said that a student humanities he cul minated the initiation ceremonies with his public lecture uses of math outlined by ira dember pbk initiates six two lehigh alumni and four undergraduates were initiated into phi beta kappa national scholastic honorary society at a closed cere mony tuesday afternoon the two alumni are dr howard f fehr 23 head of the depart ment of teaching of mathematics teacher's college columbia uni versity and dr robert b honey man 20 noted book col lector and a former lehigh trustee the four seniors initiated are samuel g sirjs william f mor paul r henderson and richard j williams .. as part of the day's program dr fehr spoke on " mathematics as one of the humanities at 8:15 p.m before a capacity crowd in the osbourne room university center fehr described mathematics as " one of the great tools for doing mental work one reason for this is the abstractness of the subject fehr emphasized the mind abstracts from experience and symbol izes this " pure process is " the highest intellectual function of mankind fehr said math is inherently of great service to mankind " an informed citizen is of greatest value to society he said math ematics is the means of conveying knowledge to the citizen mathematics can bring much to culture fehr continued the desire to explain life . the search for truth goes on and on through mathematics he said we can interpret the relative truths by the virtue of being an inter preter of truth math is one of the humanities he added the lecture was cosponsored by phi beta kappa and the depart ments of mathematics and education as part of the univer sity's centennial lecture series of 1965-66 arcadia candidates the brown and white will take pictures of all can didates for arcadia xx in the brown and white offices in the university center base ment at 7 p.m monday candidates are requested to be punctual coats and ties are required if the time is inconvenient special arrangements may be made by contacting richard janis at 865-1390 any three freshmen following the combined ifc-rhc meeting in packard lab monday night the meeting was held to explain future housing opportunities to the freshmen students sought at area colleges for d.c march two of our posters have been torn down at moravian that is the wav robert thomp son lias characterized the early stages of his efforts to get a sizable delegation from the lehigh valley to join the nov 27 " march on washington for vcirt in viet nam thompson a bethlehem resi dent said we want to demonstrate bv sheer number that there is a large percentage even if not a majority of people in this country who feel that the rover n ment is not doing enough for a peaceful settlement in viet nam said thompson participants for the march are being sought at lehigh moravian and lafayette the cost of the trip will be about 5.50 per person unless we can get some contri butions facts of life at lehigh explained to freshmen the residence hall council and the interfraternity council had their first formal contact with the freshman class monday night members of the two organizations told the frosh assembled in packard lab auditorium of the choices lacing them at the end of this vear when they leave the security of the freshman dorms james tiefenbrunn rhc president pointed out that the residence halls allow a student to artt<ipate in studies hobbies athletics and other extracurricular activities including social life he added academically the resi<lence hulls have alwavs been on a very high level the aii-residence-ltall average last semester was 2.508 the all-upper-class average was 2.38 ind the all-university average was 2.3 he continued tiefenbrunn also pointed out that two years ago a residence liall section won the all-university cup for intramural athletics residence l_a.ll open houses were lield this week at mr clintlc marshall and the centennial houses david etzel ifc president cited reasons tor joining a fraternity he said fraternities encourage superior scholarship p.irtlv by mutual assistance increase chances of graduation bv 42 per cent encourage a high standard of conduct create a sense of belonging and instill a " good spirit in an individual he did not explain how a fraternitv would increase a student's chances of graduating l>v 42 per cent etzel added that at lehigh 75 j>er cent of all athletes go per cent of the members of scholastic honor societies 65 per ct>nt ol the class cabinets and 13 of the 16 members of arcadia belong to fraternities james voung ifc rushing chairman read over the rushing schedule and rushing rules that were handed out to the rrosh at the beginning of the meeting he said tliat gryphons would be given extra copies for freshman who didn't receive them young pointed out tliat no freshman mav attend
