lehigh university brown ana white bethlehem a - tuesday november 16 1965 no 18 866-0331 vol 77 - no 18 problem session slated by ira dember for community colleges mmmmmfflfflmmmmmmmmmmmmmm a conference on the community college will be held at the university nov 21 and 22 the tri state conference entitled the community college in higher education is scheduled to draw delegates and speakers from pennsylvania new jersey and maryland and will be sponsored by six organizations or universities including lehigh dr john a stoops head of the department of education and coordinator of the conference said its purpose is to discuss three phases of the community college situation in the united states the place of community colleges in higher education curricula for community colleges and sources of teachers for these schools stoops who will deliver an address dealing with community college teachers estimated last april that 1,250 trained instructors would be needed in five year's for pennsylvania community colleges this summer lehigh introduced a pilot program in the education department to train needed teachers for the growing community colleges other speeches at the conference will be delivered with panel discussions to more fully explore the issues one of the principal purposes of the community college is to train technicians needed by industry thousands of positions are now open in industries needing workers with skills that have not existed until recently stoops thinks that technicians from industry who do not necessarily hav a degree will be drafted as instructors by the community colleges during the protracted shortage of instructors dr albert e meder jr vice provost and dean of rutgers university will deliver the keynote address the community college in higher education sunday evening at the hotel bethlehem the other panels and speeches are to be held in the university center arcadia candidates the brown and white will take pictures of candidates for arcadia xx in the brown and white offices in the basement of the university center at 7 p.m thursday ' candidates are requested to be punctual coats and ties are required if the time is inconvenient special arrangements may be made by contacting richard g janls at 865-1390 any candidate failing to show up for the picture risks forfeiting publicity in tn brown and white this is the last chance to have the pictures taken b a w photo by bill reldma freshmen learn - fraternity life it explained to freshmen at sammy's open house last sunday the frosh who visited town fraternities last saturday afternoon streamed into sayr park in droves sunday to be entertained by greeks this is the first of three weekends in which fraternities are opened to freshmen draft affects few but none inducted by ed jackman several lehigh students have been among those affected by the monthly draft increases one of them john j shivek 67 seems to be typical of stu dents receiving draft notices in that an irregularity has developed shivek left school during the spring semester to earn money for his tuition he had already paid tuition for this fall when he was called to take his physical examination and was scheduled to report for duty oct 2 after contacting his congress man fred b.rooney his induction date was extended until the end of the semester miss spaide secretary to the selective service field supervisor said a student would have to be reclassifled i-s to stay in school until the end of the term after he had been called up mrs john shivek said her son's chance of being called up at the end of the semester was " 50-50 shivek is less optimistic , and said he is almost certain of being recalled james h wagner university registrar and chairman of the laison committee between the sel ective service and the american association of college registrars and admissions officers said that as far as he knows although several students have received draft notices none have been in ducted he said the draft situation looks about the same as it did in september extremely " fluid the pentagon he said has a number of alternatives draft boards could start taking married men students and others who are currently extempt since washing ton has made no decision local draft boards must determine their own policy he noted wagner said the lowering of mental and physical criteria should take the pressure off students for a while however he predicted that if quotas get too high students would be called up defense strategist kahn speaks tonight in packard auditorium herman kahn perhaps the most in military strategist since clausewltz will speak tonight on escalation and crises at 8 o'clock in packard lab auditorium the public is invited the target of a veritable international furor in 1960-61 after the release of his first book on thermonuclear war kahn is the originator of controlled reprisal and has played a major role in the trend away from panic button warfare he is director of hudson institute inc a non-profit think factory in harmon - on-hudson n.y is a consultant to civilian and military planners in the pentagon and industry the author of three books on strategic problems of survival in the thermonuclear age and a physicist and mathematician by education sponsors for his campus visit are the department of international relations and the brown and white expected to arrive from new york late this morning with mrs kahn he is to be honored by the sponsors at a luncheon in the rathbone room of the university center this afternoon he will give a presentation speculations on the year 2000 at the weekly three-hour international relations seminar conduct by dr carey b joynt head of the department the kahns will be dinner guests of kappa alpha fraternity this evening before his public lecture after the program kahn will be honored at a reception given by chi psl fraternity in lower sayer park kahn plans to use slides to illustrate both presentations and the evening program will include a question period five years ago kahn talked in his first book about post nuclear strike insanity among the survivors of an exchange leaving millions dead many readers were horrified an editor of the scientific american asked is there really a herman kahn it is hard to believe ... this is a moral tract of mass murder how to plan it how to commit it how to get away with it how to justify it it was perhaps the attitude and concern expressed in the title of his second work herman kahn fast for freedom to aid impoverished this year lehigh students will again be asked to participate in the annual thanksgiving fast for freedom which provldesfrood for negro families in the south according to james w winchester jr 66 coordinator of the fast university students currently on the university meal plan may demon strate their concern over inequalities arising from southern segregation practices by abstaining from one meal on monday nov 22 the dining service will credit 80 cents to the cause for each meal tnat is not served fraternities will also be asked to give up one meal or donate cash members of the faculty and administration will also be so licited for donations the national campaign is jointly sponsored by the united states national student association the u s youth council and the northern student movement the drive at lehigh is being planned by arcadia with the aid of the civil rights club a desk wiii be set up opposite the university post office from 4:45 to 7*15 p.m wednesday thursday and friday of this week where mem bers of the meal plan may sign their names and meal card numbers to join the fasters the national drive in 1964 raised over 38,000 and provided food for 100.000 mississippi negroes lehigh raised close to 300 last year and is hoping to exceed last year's total the money from the fast will be used by the national committee to purchase surplus food from the u s department of agriculture this food will be redistributed among impoverished negro families in not only mississippi but also georgia arkansas south carolina louis iana and alabama see nuclear page 4
