empty-handed after a spectacular raid staged tuesday night it began when 25 flags were found to be missing from standards on fourth street with characteris tic perspicacity city officials level ed the finger of suspicion at tay lor hall two police squad cars dashed up the hill and armed with a search-warrant and night-sticks four officers burst into taylor they searched the rooms but found nothing in a long distance conversation with harry moss of the music corporation of america good man's contracting agents last night fear was expressed that houseparty would be without a band when it was discovered that goodman had cancelled his con tract for a dance to be held tomor row night at washington and lee university the w and l ring turn phi student newspaper sta ted that goodman was cancelling all contracts due to illness which naturally caused consternation here members of the lehigh senior ball committee when contacted last night said that they had got ten no word of any cancellation and that as far as they knew ev erything was fine the call to moss this morning served as a double check and settled the matter for once and all the washington and lee cancel lation gives lehigh the distinction of featuring the opening night of the new benny goodman band it will play here on the 25th in new york at a private party on the 26th and in the new haven arena on the 27th moss stated that the reason for the cancellation was that members of the new band could not break their contracts with their old em ployers without first giving two weeks notice according to union rules therefore the band was not ready to appear however they have been in rehearsal the past two weeks and will be a well knit or ganization by the time houseparty date rolls around the most expensive unit benny goodman ever had a greater goodman is what moss promises for next friday teddy wilson stellar piano player will be back again and for the rest of his band goodman has combed every big band in new york and points west as well as the old b g crowd other members of the unit will probably be charles christian negro guitar player art bernstein bass player and dave tough drummer helen forrest of course will supply the vocals according to down beat and metronome the new band will be an entirely new experiment in music according to moss good man is definitely on his way to the top according to the senior ball committee lehigh is going to have one swell dance to lay cornerstone at grace hall tuesday council admits allentown men commuters granted seat in town group will hold dance nov 23 conscription affected about one sixth of lehigh university when 428 students faculty members and members of the staff including men from five different countries registered at drown hall wednes day from 7 a m to 9 p m under the direction of wray h cong don dean of undergraduates the first student wm d gru ber bus 41 appeared at 6:55 a.m and robert d watt arts 43 the last man finished at 9:15 p m the influx reached a maximum be tween 11 a m and 3 p m and required the assistance of charles a seidle assistant director of ad missions prof francis j trem bley assistant professor of biology and prof kenneth w lamson as sociate professor of mathematics in addition to the regular shift for that period sixteen men working in five hour shifts had been con sidered sufficient said dean cong don the provision for registration facilities in drown hall was made for all men who are connected with the university and are elig ible for draft however some of these men registered in town and those who had advance drill cre dit were not required to register among those who registered were men from hamburg ger many lauzanne switzerland ankara turkey venezuela and chile distribution of the registration cards will be made by the county commission all cards are guarded by an extensive checking system which requires that every card be accounted for even cards that are orn or soiled must be counted md sent to the committee houseparty lists due tuesday noon only members of the junior class will be allowed to compete for po sitions on business staff of the epitome under rules laid down by the board of publications yester day the board also abolished honor aria for members of business staff and replaced them with a system of commissions devoting the entire two hours and wenty minutes of the meeting to business problems the board ruled that following this year no student or group of students may publish any blotter or book cover for which advertising is solicited a petition of four students to publish a calendar and university directory was denied engraving contract signed the 1941 epitome was given per mission to sign a contract for en graving with the horan engraving company of new york and a con tract for printing with the country life press of garden city l i the horan engraving company has done the work for the last three epitomes the changes in the method of competition for business staff of epitome came as a result of an in vestigation by pi delta epsilon honorary journalism fraternity at request of the board the change was made to increase the sale of 1941 epitomes in re cent years the sales of epitome fell off because of indifference of business staff competitors to sell five books any junior will be allowed to compete for the staff if he sells five books or more he will be giv en a commission the junior sell ing the most books will be named business manager in his senior year while the junior selling sec ond greatest number will be made financial manager certain changes which will have to be made in the constitution of epitome in order to make it con form with changes made in busi ness staff were referred to the ex ecutive committee of publications for action the cornerstone of eugene gifford grace hall 300,000 arena and recreation building now in process of construction will be laid at exercises at 3 p m next tuesday mr grace 99 conrad e kluger arts 42 richard j berg arts 42 and robert n gusdorff bus 42 berg and kluger will portray the parts of the script-writing team of ben son and law patterned after the eccentricities of hecht and mac arthur gusdorff will play the part of c f friday a holly wood producer susie the leading feminine role will be played miss anna marie rohs kilboun gordon jr bus 42 will act the part of larry toms cowboy movie idol rosetti toms publicity agent will be tak en by sheldon s zalkind arts 43 rodney bevan leading love in terest and movie extra will be portrayed by edward l blossom eng 44 of selection has been approved by col joseph s leonard head of the department of military science and tactics and lieut samuel pierce instructor of military science and tactics forty men from the top 50 percent of the junior military course will be allowed to take a basic mater ial test which is to be made by lieutenant pierce the examina tion will be both written and prac tical the fifteen men who pass the test with the highest grades will be permitted to shoot at the rifle range where eight of the group will be selected for election to scabbard and blade the men who are eligible for the the stu dent concerts-lectures programs will be inaugurated with the lec ture of captain c r w knight retired british army officer at 8 15 tonight in packard auditorium replacing jim thorpe who could not be re-scheduled captain knight will speak of his experien ces in the present european war these experiences include the campaign in france as well as the present bombing of the british isles he will also discuss the tor pedoing of the steamship volen dam on which he was returning to the united states and he will describe the evacuation of dun kirk he was also present at the bombing of arras which he will tell about to show pet eagle capt knight will have his pet eagle mr ramshaw with him at the lecture in studying eagles he has traveled thousands of miles and is today considered an inter national authority on birds of prey mr ramshaw helped amuse the british soldiers in france in march before the flanders fight before returning to the united states captain knight's home was in the path of the nazi bombers which were almost continually in the skies overhead mr ramshaw was almost lost in the torpedoing of the volendam the last man to leave the ship capt knight searched in vain for his eagle which was in another part of the ship after the ship was towed into port days later he fount the bird still alive although captain knight has lectured to the students of several the campus for all those students interested in the re election of president roosevelt miss mary mclnroy chairman of the young democratic clubs of pennsylvania has appointed fred erick r gilmore arts 41 as or ganization chairman of the group it will be called the roosevelt col lege club gilmore announced that the main purpose of the club is to remind all eligible student voters both democratic and republican to register for the coming national election the initial meeting will be held at 7:30 p m monday oct 21 in the drown hall lounge at which time the club's officers will be chosen lehigh is one of the six penn sylvania colleges whose chemical engineering course has been accre dited by the american chemical society and the american institute of chemical engineering president clement c williams announced yesterday the lists of accredited chemical engineering courses ap peared in the oct 11 issue of the american chemical society's news edition other colleges in pennsylvania with accredited chemical engineer ing courses are carnegie institute of technology drexel institute of technology pennsylvania state college the university of pennsyl vania and pittsburgh university in recognition of a petition sign ed by 55 allentown students the town council voted the lehigh allentown club a seat on the council tuesday evening at a spe cial meeting in the arcadia room of drown
