had cancelled his con tract for a dance to be held tomor row night at washington and lee university the w and l ring turn phi student newspaper sta ted that goodman was cancelling all contracts due to illness which naturally caused consternation here members of the lehigh senior ball committee when contacted last night said that they had got ten no word of any cancellation and that as far as they knew ev erything was fine the call to moss this morning served as a double check and settled the matter for once and all the washington and lee cancel lation gives lehigh the distinction of featuring the opening night of the new benny goodman band it will play here on the 25th in new york at a private party on the 26th and in the new haven arena on the 27th moss stated that the reason for the cancellation was that members of the new band could not break their contracts with their old em ployers without first giving two weeks notice according to union rules therefore the band was not ready to appear however they have been in rehearsal the past two weeks and will be a well knit or ganization by the time houseparty date rolls around the most expensive unit benny goodman ever had a greater one sixth of lehigh university when 428 students faculty members and members of the staff including men from five different countries registered at drown hall wednes day from 7 a m to 9 p m under the direction of wray h cong don dean of undergraduates the first student wm d gru ber bus 41 appeared at 6:55 a.m and robert d watt arts 43 the last man finished at 9:15 p m the influx reached a maximum be tween 11 a m and 3 p m and required the assistance of charles a seidle assistant director of ad missions prof francis j trem bley assistant professor of biology and prof kenneth w lamson as sociate professor of mathematics in addition to the regular shift for that period sixteen men working in five hour shifts had been con sidered sufficient said dean cong don the provision for registration facilities in drown hall was made for all men who are connected with the university and are elig ible for draft however some of these men registered in town and those who had advance drill cre dit printing with the country life press of garden city l i the horan engraving company has done the work for the last three epitomes the changes in the method of competition for business staff of epitome came as a result of an in vestigation by pi delta epsilon honorary journalism fraternity at request of the board the change was made to increase the sale of 1941 epitomes in re cent years the sales of epitome fell off because of indifference of business staff competitors to sell five books any junior will be allowed to compete for the staff if he sells five books or more he will be giv en a speak of his experien ces in the present european war these experiences include the campaign in france as well as the present bombing of the british isles he will also discuss the tor pedoing of the steamship volen dam on which he was returning to the united states and he will describe the evacuation of dun kirk he was also present at the bombing of arras which he will tell about to show pet eagle capt knight will have his pet eagle mr ramshaw with him at the lecture in studying eagles he has traveled thousands of miles and is today considered an inter national authority on birds of prey
