years he follows v rodger dlgllio who won the honor last year the first lehigh student to do so since 1937 early is the only pennsylvanian among the 32 u.s students selected for the scholarships the pitts burgh native currently has a 3.87 cumulative average is ranked second in his engineering class of 292 and is co-captain of the varsity swimming team early is the third rhodes scholar now on the university campus dr w deming lewis university president and dr lawrence h gipson pulitzer prize winning author and professor emeritus of history are the other two for early the scholarship is a crowning achievement in a colle giate career marked by outstanding scholastic work he earned freshman sophomore and junior honors for having an average higher than 3.0 and has been on the dean's list every semester that he has been at lehigh he received the junior class alumni prize given for class rank in the college of engineering and in 1964 received the scott paper co foundation scholarship for leadership given to an engineer ing student who intends to follow a career in industry or commerce early has also received the bill hardy memorial award given to a member of the junior class for outstanding scholarship and the alpha pi mu award for being the outstanding freshman student in industrial engineering early explained that he did not as yet know what college he would attend at oxford because his decision would be dictated by the college or colleges he would be able to get into the scholarship provides for two years of expenses after the scholarship expires early said he wants to go into industrial management from a quantitative point of view which would involve the use of scientific aids and computers dr ferdinand p beer head of the department of engineering mechanics said that he was personally pleased that early had won the scholarship he was impressed by early's sincere desire to get the most possible out of his lehigh education beer added that early " wanted to have a broad education and is most desirous to associate with faculty members in order to learn even that much more stewart early path to rhodes long tedious reward great the path leading toward a rhodes scholarship is a long and tedious one but one well worth the effort for the successful candidates thirty - two new rhodes sch olars representing 28 states and 22 colleges were chosen last month by a selection process that began with endorsements by their own schools and ended successfully in competition before state and district committees the new scholar's will spend two years engaged in study and research at oxford university in england the rhodes stipend of approximately 2,500 will be used to pay for the academic and living expenses of the student during his stay in england the scholarship fund was founded by cecil john rhodes british statesman and philanthro pist in his will of 1902 rhodes stated that he wished a rhodes scholar to be the best man for 16 brothers out pi lam to rush by dan gladding the pi lambda phi case is all but closed the fraternity has severed ties - with the 15 men taking part in an unauthorized party may 22 and will retain full rushing privileges its ifc seat an intramural participation the fraternity is on social pro bation as the result of a previous incident and the probation will be reviewed on march 15 the ifc judiciary committee has recommended and dean of stu dent life preston parr has ap proved the following measures — that the individuals involved in the may 22 incident be severed from the chapter no severed men may enter the pi lambda phi house un der any circumstances during the rest of his undergraduate career at lehigh -- that an entreaty be made to the national fraternity and its alumni association to extend full resources to aid the chapter dur ing its period of rehabilitation -- that rushing privileges be maintained along with the chapter's seat in ifc and full intramural representation social probation is to be reviewed on march 18 1966 as previously determined — the recommendation that a suitable graduate student or facul ty member be considered fbr resi dence in the chapter house as offi cial university representative will he discussed by the alumni council and dean parr the 15 men moved out of the fraternity by december 18 the judiciary committee headed by peter burns 66 pre viously had recommended that the fraternity lose rushing privileges be put on a probationary status as a colony living group lose its ifc vote and tie prohibited from intra mural sports and other activities parr never approved these pro posals according to parr and burns the committee's recommendations were changed because the frater nity decided to assess individual responsibility after the original proposals were presented burns said it was our intent all along to assess individual responsibility it was thought that it would be desirable to hold individuals ac countable for the actions at one point however it appeared the fraternity wanted to take corporate responsibility burns said there were several reasons the fraternity might not want to hold individuals responst want to hold individuals respon sible he did not enumerate them according to burns the alumni council of the fraternity met with the judiciary committee dec 8 and made new proposals for pun ishment including the individual punishments the final measures derived from this meeting explaining the function of the alumni council parr said that it was set up to form a closer relationship with the chapter than is normal for ulumnl parr said the severing of the it men is being watched over solev hy the alumni council and lie chapter itself parr does not know the identity of the offenders assistant dean of student life william l quay and burns do not know the identities either quay said " the alumni coun rll has accepted responsibility in the rehabilitation of the clia|jter the judiciary committee i think through the positive attitude of the alumni croup feels the new measures are adequate the fraternity is now on social probation because of damage done to the market street chapter liouse will for administration i to r inspect the installation elected arcadians choose officers by neal arluck arcadia's last meeting of 1965 on december if was marked by an unusual occurrence -- an audience in the collective sense of the term arcadia's regular audience for most of the past semester has been a lone brown and white reporter on dec 15 the presence of ten of the eleven new members of arcadia xx swelled the audience to stag gering proportions they came directly from a caucus which had just chosen officers the officers of arcadia xx will bo president harvey l york 67 vice president jeffrey h kapell 68 treasurer d'arcy roper 67 corresponding secretary martin d cohen 68 and recording secretary james r oyler 67 all but oyler are members of ar cadia xix in this its next to last meeting arcadia xix voted on two motions pertaining to arcadia's assumption of the allocation of funds previously done by the student activities committee both motions were passed unanimously the first created a finance and calendar committee whose function will be to review all financial and calendar matters pertaining to arcadia and to make recommendations for action the committee will be " comprised of six members three arcad ians one being the treasurer of arcadia and the other two being appointed by the president of arcadia and three non-arcadians ... to serve for a two year term the second motion established a procedure tor appeals of decisions of arcadia a student group that wishes to have a decision reconsid ered must submit a petition of appeals to the finance and calendar committee which will decide whether the appeal should be heard by arcadia if the finance and calendar committee does not feel that the grounds for appeal are sufficient or after reconsideration arcadia's new decision is not satisfactory to the student group the group may then petition for an appeal to the student activities committee york head of the administration committee presented awards
