brown and white vol 77 - no 38 bethlehem pa - tuesday march 15.1966 866-0331 matmen take eastern title bv jay hammond and peter i.ittman the terrific trio became the terrific 10 last saturday at pittsburgh as the engineers romped to their 18th eiwa championship lehigh turned tn rn outstanding teem effort to win by 22 points over favored nary lehigh came up with such an outstanding team effort that the advanced all their men to the quarter finals ami onlv one engineer was completely eliminated at live end of the semi finals the engineers never trailed in the tournament thev led 14-13 at the end of the first round over penn state widened the lead to 22-20 after the evening round and led 72-56 over navy going into saturday evening's wrestling the team trophv was clinched follow ing the final 167-lb consolation bout lehigh racked up 85 points tn the two-dav tournament with navy second with 63 points penn state and armv tied for third with 60 and cornell in fifth with 51 the engineer's total was third highest in eastern tournaments thev scored 88 in 19f>l and 96 in 1962 mike caruso joe peritore and jon rushatr picked up individual championships for the engineers bill stuart and bot hartenstine lehigh's other finalists lost out in attempts for an individual title stuart's loss to hicks was his first loss since ids sophomore year at the nationals the lehigh captain had a string of 35 bouts without a loss before losing to hicks caruso with his win over gary burger of navy in the finals captured his second eiwa title and ran his win streak to 26 the key round of the tournament was the seml-flnals as the engineers moved to a 62-44 edge over nav . penn state advanced seven men into the semi-finals and lehigh and navy advanced six each but wins bv hartenstine and dick dewalt of penn state put lehigh in command hartenstine scored the upset of the tournament when he edged jerry seaman 6-6 2-0 in overtime the first seeded nittany lion had a perfect 9-0 record and was second-team a ll american the win came shortly after elliott tepper's loss to bob bobbins and gave the engineers a big lift dewalt's win over john kent of navy made a difference of at junior year abroad now available at u the educational policy committee prbmpted by faculty action made available to lehigh students eight different " junior year abroad programs recently these programs open to students with a high language pro ficiency and satisfactory grades must be approved by the student's academic advisor and the dean of his college he must also be able to pass the admission requirements set by the sponsoring college the host colleges sponsoring the various programs are sweet briar and hamilton with programs ln paris smith with programs in hamburg elorence and madrid wayne state university with programs in ereiburg and munich and new york university also with a program in madrid a permanent foreign study advisory committee is presently being organized with prof john haight of the history department as its chairman students interested in the program should contact their academic advisor haight prof john van erde of the romance languages department or prof ernest dilworth of the english de partment taylor test conflicted by tom roberts last wednesday afternoon a wlrn announcement made some 600 freshmen extremely happy the dreaded english 2 exam had been cancelled dr albert hartung associate professor of english commented " to tell you the truth we didn't know a conflict existed between the test and the thursday after noon taylor leciure " even though a very small percentage of lehigh freshmen would go to the lecture since taylor is such a commanding figure we did not want to penalize the minority who wished to go we came to a very late awareness of the conflict the test that was to be given last thursday is wiped off the books according to hartong " in april if no more dignitaries show up the second scheduled hourly will be given the de partment has not yet decided what the second hourly will cover two gryphons james under koffler 66 and john ho 66 both of whom have taken english 2 hourlies were questioned about the hourlies underkoffler thought " the questions are very picayune — they are not an indic ation of a true understanding of your reading all they show is how well a student is able to me morl ze many meaningless details he continued ho thought they should have essays instead of multiple choice possibly character sketches questions on the symbolism and plot for example ho suggested that quizzes be given in class if the teachers must determine whether the stu dents have read the material domestication of the beetle - dave rothermel 66 returned from the eiwa tournament sunday to find that hii volkswagen had boon housebroken-by six of his phi gam brothers who carried it up the front stairs and leaned it on the porch grard school offers two new programs two graduate programs result ing in master of arts degrees will be offered beginning in septem ber dr robert d stout dean of the graduate school announ ced recently the programs are in social relations and economics and are designed for persons interested in doctoral study and careers in teaching and government students entering the social relations program are exacted to be involved in research on the problems of the lehigh val ley such as ethnic relations urban redevelopment and delin quency the research study concen trates ln areas of sociology so cial psychology and cultural anthropology and includes lin guistics ami latin american and russian specialization the program emphasizes re lations with other departments particularly the information sciences and psychology stout said it would be open to full time and part-time students with evening courses being offered also graduate assistantships ran be obtained from prof robert c williamson in the department of social relations by april 1 dr einn jensen professor and acting head of the department of economics said the master of arts degrees in economics are designed primarily for full-time students who plan to ret a doc torate or who hope to become government or business econo mist or who plan to teach econom ics especially in community colleges admission requires a major in economics or finance stout said but superior students with an adequate ls»ckground in econo mics and mathematics may be admitted the program of study will in clude micro-economics and macro-economics finance and either selected study or a thesis additional information con cerning the economics degree can be obtained from jensen see engineers page 16
