caruso cops 2nd ncaa title brown and white vol 77 z no 42 bethlehem pa - tuesday march 29 1966 866 0331 joint group studies rushing problems by tom roberts the long-existing problem of freshmen rushing and contacting is finally on its way to being solved according to harvey york 67 president of arcadia xx dean brennan presented a proposal at a meeting last tuesday for next year's rushing which in cluded plans for open houses early in the fall semester york stated " i question whether we should have rushing so early in the first semester i feel too great a burden is placed on the freshmen with much early rushing he added in conclusion york said i feel rushing is harmful to the freshmen having the rushing schedule set up during the week ends in the fall semester would require the freshmen to stay here every weekend--it would leave no open weekends ralph levy 67 the new ifc president thought,"nothingcon crete went on at the meeting brennan made a proposal for rushing in the fall semester but many of his dates conflicted with all university events levy added levy stated i doubt very much whether or not anything will happen soon i personally feel.it will take a long time in regards to the possibility of an early solution to the problem of a mutual rush plan when asked about harvey york's anti-first-semester rush ideas levy stated harvey is basically concerned with the freshmen the choice is between a condensed two-week rush like we have now or a rush spread over the first semester levy added " the question is which is the lesser of the two evils he con tinued the ifc feels informal rushing in the fall semester will make the freshmen's decision towards fraternities more educa ted levy said this has raised the question whether or not this first semester rush will create more dirty rushing he stated we feel we can overcome the dirty rushing problem from within our own group levy added clarence b campbell asso ciate dean of students and director of residence halls stated i have no objection to the fall rush as long as the con flicts can 1 worked out jim young gg ifc rush chairman stated nothing def inite has c6me out of it yet brennan's proposal was a sum mary of what the other four groups presented his was not a new proposal young continued we're all pretty much in favor of an increase of rushing in the fall he added " due to the increase of groups rush ing we'll have to add some time somewhere he went on in conclusion young stated " i see no difference between early fall and early spring the next meeting of the com mission will be thi.s afternoon with all parties involved hoping for continued progress in a mutual rushing proposal pbk sets talk on killing college dr george boas professor emeritus of philosophy at johns hopkins university will give a public lecture at 8 p.m friday in the osborne room of the university center on the topic " how to kill a university dr boas will be spending all day thursday and friday addressing classroom sessions and meeting informally with faculty and students as a phi beta kappa visiting scholar while on campus dr boas will also discuss " science and the humanist before social relations students thursday morning he will give a talk to students living in mcclintic-marshall house thurs day evening when his topic will be " philosophy and common sense friday morning philosophy students will hear him speak on theories of general determinism both classroom lectures will be open to all students and faculty while on campus dr boas is scheduled to attend luncheon meetings with members of the phi beta kappa council and faculty and students of the department of philosophy as well as a residence halls council dinner and a phi beta kappa banquet the phi beta kappa visiting scholars program was begun in 1956 to give undergraduates a chance to meet with and talk to outstanding scholars who are also outstanding teachers george boas by jay hammond mike caruso became onlv the second l*high wrestler to win two national championships n lead ing the engineers to a fourth place finish in the 1966 ncaa tournament at ames lowa last weekend joe perltore picked up second place honors for the second straight year while billy stuart 196r champ and jon rushatz picked up thirds as lehigh set a new school point record with 48 the previous high of 45 was set last year at laramle wyo however the engineer's 48 potnts made them a distant fourth behind the three big eight powers oklahoma state the team champion with 79 points lowa state second with 70 and oklahoma third with 69 points caruso gained his second title by decisioning bob fehrs of michigan 9-6 it was the second year in a row that the two lightweights tangled for 123-lb honors . the only other lehlgh wrestler to win two ncaa crowns was the great eddie eichelberger who turned the trick in 1955 and 1956 caruso took the lead over fehrs late in the first period with a bftrtel-roll takedown fehrs had thn fholce in the second pprtod and took the down posi tion he escaped after a minute net a half onlv tn l>e taken down with 30 seconds to go bv a single i<»k maneuver * leading 4-1 in the third erio<l the ! hi h junior quickly got a rolling reverse to go up 6-1 fehrs escaped and took caruso down with 50 seconds to go to move within two points the llkhtwelßhts traded reverses and caruso added a point for time caruso became i clui'tis 1 3th national champion moving the engineers into a tie for sixth with pitts burgh for the most national champions he finished the season with a 19-0 record his varsity log is now 37-1 with a lifetime record in high school and college of 130-2 caru.so avenged his only varsity loss in the semi finals by decisionlng bob steenlage of army 4-2 steenlage had tx>aten caru.so last
