brown and white vol 77 - no 44 bethlehem pa - tuesday april 19 1966 8660331 usia work explained by deputy director the usia is in business for only one essential reason to help achieve the foreign policy objectives of the united states by using the tools of information and persuasion burnett ander son deputy director of the united states information agency told a group here yesterday speaking at a lecture spon sored by the friends of the public library in the university center monday evening an derson spoke on " the usia the mission and.the myths anderson explained that the mission of the usia is to help achieve united states foreign policy objectives by influencing public attitudes in other nations and by advising the president his representatives abroad and the various departments and agencies on the implications of foreign opinion for present and contemplated united states pol icies usia activities are myriad anderson explained activities include the establishment of more than 360 public libraries in more than 80 countries the supporting of the publication of 1,808 amer ican books last year and prop aganda efforts in south viet nam looking at the south viet nam problem anderson said " the critical importance of the psy chological front there was rec ognized in may 1965 when the president delegated the respon-r sibility for coordinating and dir ecting all ujs psychological and information activities in viet nam to the director of the usia in the past few months the man power of the agency in viet nam has increased to 160 americans and nearly 400 vietnamese co workers he said these workers anderson said renter their activities for the mot part at the rice-roots level under wartime conditions with a basic mission to move among the people they must often do so in the sinister sha the band and glee club performed their spring serenade saturday night for members and guests of the bethlehem lions club part of the profit from the sale of tickets was al lotted to lions club charities student and friend injured in accident a lehigh sophomore and a former classmate were injured neither seriously saturday evening when the ford mustang in which they were riding hit a concrete stair between alpha tau omega and chi psi and rolled over joseph reynolds cb and thomas kissane a student at keystone junior college and reynolds former roommate were passing a car on the sharp sayre park curve at about 6:25 p.m when the left wheel of kissane's light blue convertible hit the stair rolled one and a half times and ended on its left side across the road according to reynolds the passenger in the car the occupants of the car were taken to st lukes hospital where kissane was treated for cuts of the head hand and knee and released reynolds was treated for bruises of the head and chest and released the car received extensive damage the left front wheel was broken from the axle and the left side was smashed the convertible top which was up at the time of the accident was flattened in the middle the hood was bent and the right sides and trunk deck was dented the glass in the windows and headlights was unbroken evictees speak of hp gripes as is already known the residents of mcclinttc-marshall are not receiving any payment for moving out over houseiarty weekend this year they were to receive two dollars each to compensate f?>r their two exoduses from the residence tom hunt 09 president of richards house has asked that each man from richards be piloted a dollar for moving out last fall the final vote bv the members of hhc resulted in the decision that no one l>e riven any money when hunt w.is asked his reason for requesting the money ho stated my aim was not to pet the one dollar but to stop them from getting the two dollars hunt felt that noone should be reimbursed for moving out when lie heard the plans to give the residents of m&m two dollars each hunt followed this to the logical conclusion and requested that the members ol richards i riven one dollar bob weintraub f>b president of mam al stated in reference to hunt's request i thought it was a very unreasonable request it only happens to them once unless they move into mam next war besides it's already past weintraub continued he hunt seemed to be bitter about the fact that m&m was getting money and tils men didn't ;>! tn last semester weintraub was aksed it anyone in his section planned to protest the enforced exodus each semester we thought verv seriously about remaining here unless we were bodllv thrown out lie stated laughing " but right now i think we'll move out we'll still protest it however he added another m&m section president gerald grulte 57 w.ts isk his opinion of hunt's proposal he thought that they should not im reinbursed for moving out onlv once i can see moving out oih-e--bul we're being moved out twice a year every veur lie stated grul>e said the first time he had heard of the plan to refuse to move out was at a house council meeting and alter tlwi it was onlv in 1 joking manner he thought the best wav for the men of mam to ret someone to change the spring and fall exoduses would be to protest year after year in the hopes that hhc would eventuall work out something to the benefit of evervone the democratic proceedure is thrbesr w.iv in added lab dedication in may an all-day dedication program of the martin 1 whitaker laboratory of metallurgy and chemical engineering on may 3 will be attended by a group of 250 nationally-prominent persons a panel discussion on engineering science creating man's progress - enriching his culture by dr richard g folsom president of rensselaer polytechnic institute dr charles law mccabe deputy assistant secretary of commerce for science and technology u s department of commerce and dr bruce dearing president of the state university of new york will highlight the morning program dr folsom has led a career as both educator and scientist after graduating from the california insti tute of technology he taught for five years at his alma mater 20 years at trie university of califor nia and directed tin engineering research institute it the university of michigan for jive years folsom has been involved in such diverse projects is upper atmosphere research food preservation bv atomic energy landing of supersonic aircnift machining of tough metals high temperature metal lurgy accoustlcs illumination an l industrial air pollution dr mccal>e graduated from dickinson n<l did ins graduate work at carnegie tech he is currently on leave from carnegie where lie is dean of graduate studies and vice president lor research widely recognized as an industrial consultant lie previously taught at harvard university spring is sneaking out on the roof of a residence hall to sunbathe and study one of the first warm days of the spring semester brought many students including these freshmen out of their dark rooms see dedication page 5 see anderson page 6
