brown and white vol 77 - no 45 866-0331 bethlehem pa - friday april 22 1966 by william hylton lewis cuts dravo fire fine by 1 75 a victory of sorts has been scored in the battle of the fire fines university president w doming lewis agreed tuesday to cut the 350 fine levied on dravo house in half meeting with arcadia president harvey york and freshman class president casey cogut lewis acquiesced to the request of the stu dents to lower the fine it's all right with me if we reduce this fine by half lewis said the operating principle of the corporate fine remains unchanged however since the fines are a result of trustee legislation only fur ther action by the trustees can alter the system " i think the principle is fairly clear lewis commented it is one of the ways to get law and order you don't know the individual but you do know it is one of the group " i don't think any one of us is defending this particular system it just happens to be the one on the books he said we have to have a better way if we are to go to them the trustees he added students seeking a change in the system had earlier been led to be lieve the trustee's would be requested to alter the fine system at their meeting last friday but in a conference with student leaders four days before the meeting dr charles seldle vice president for the adminis tration announced that the request would not be made because no suf ficient proposal for change had been offered lewis and seidle were told of the brown and white's suggestion for a fire marshall system tuesday morning and both administrators indi cated that the suggestion " sounds good york said he intended to set up a formal committee to draw up a specific proposal for presentation to the trustees at their june 3 meeting during tuesday's meeting seidle told york that an arcadia sug gestion for an alteration in the fire alarm boxes was being investigated the change would involve replacing the present alarm-box doors with solid steel ones cogut told lewis and seidle that two of the breakage incidents occur red around houseparty when many richards residents were in dravo having surrendered their accommodations to dates he also pointed out that because of the design of dravo a student living there could enter and leave the building regularly without ever using the central area where the violated alarm box is located dravo is the only residence hall with an alarm box located in a public area i would consider giving special consideration to this request and mezzo-soprano beverly evans and baritone david clatworthy rehearse for their performances as jocasta and creon in stavinsky's oedipus rex the opera will be presen ted at 8 p.m tomorrow in grace hall i iii\n m\l llll n i'rksidknt lkwis arcadia alters friday night hp regulations university rules and regula tions prohibit living groups from having parties on the friday night of houseparty until after 11 p.m the arradia social codes com mittee lias requested and received permission to allow friday night parties during the brothers four concert on the following conditions 1 sixty per cent of the living group members including fresh men affiliates must purchase tickets to the brothers four concert 2 the parties must be prop erly petitioned for and chaper ones must be present a 1 * th parties will be closed a m~rty is defined as being more than three couples in a living group fires hit sayre park two small brush fires burned briefly in sayre park monday night in answer to the fire and an alleged growing student riot the lehigh campus was visited by a fire engine pumper one fire emergency car three beth lehem patrol cars one detec tive's car at least one motor cycle policeman and the campus cop the greater source of trouble that evening however proved to be the on looking students not the fire according to an eyewitness the first fire broke out behind alpha tau omega next to beta theta pi the firemen who answered the call were greeted by a crowd of fire-watchers who booed and heckled the firemen at this point the campus police man made his appearance unable to disperse the crowd which now numbered over fifty strong the policeman returned to his patrol car only to be lambasted by a barrage of eggs thrown from the phi gamma delta house the firemen then called the bethlehem police to assist in dispersing the crowd the city police also met limited success in dispersing the fire watching crowd just as the first fire was dying a second one sprung up next to phi sigma kappa where there is smoke there are bound to be flames - after the beta volunteer firemen helped extinguish the fire they turned the water on each other met stars glee club to sing oedipus rex by dan gladding on april 22 1961 the lehigh glee club presented a perform ance of igor stravinsky's opera oedipus rex tomorrow four years and a day later the glee club will again perform oedipus in response to continued requests for a repeat of the opera this year the opera will l>e directed by henry butler of new york's metropolitan opera ami will feature noted operatic solo ists from new york and chicago the supporting 42 piece orches tra will be composed of pro fessional musicians from new york and philadelphia the opera will be conducted by prof robert b cutler head of the department of music and director of the glee club stravinsky has fused the sophocles play of the same name into six episodes eachdisclosing more of oedi pus's role in the incest and patricide presented to him oedipus becomes king of the thebans when he solves the riddle of the sphinx what travels on four legs then two then three man who walks on all fours at birth on two legs at maturity and stumbles with the aid of a cane on three legs in old age frederick d mayer will sing the role of oedipus lie is pre sently assistant professor of music and music education at co lumbia university he has ap peared in opera concert and recital oratorio on television in summer stock and in profes sional church and synagogue performances the city of thebes is soon swept with plague and begs the king to save them from the im see glee page 6 see dravo page 6 car permsts i freshman car permits will be issued for house -
