brown and white v 01.77 no 51 bethlehem pa tuesday may 17 1966 866-0331 50 awards given at flagpole by glenn airgood fifty academic aervice and athletic awards highlighted the uni versity's annual flagpole day exercises yesterday the bosey rel ter leadership cup awarded to the student who m the opinion of a faculty committee ls the outstanding leader in the senior class went to stephen f goldman maury poscover 66 received the university service award as the student who has done the most to promote student body unity campus cooperation for worthy objectives and loyalty to alma mater together goldman and poscover shared the arcadia service award given for extraordinary contribution to student activities the student awards for outstanding teaching were awarded to alan w pense assistant professor of metallurgical engineering richard j redd associate professor of fine arts and n paul loomba pro fessor of management the alpha phi omega award given to a senior and a faculty mem ber for outstanding service to the university went to jan c pmi lips 66 frank e dutt jr 66 and h barrett davis head of the division of speech the phi eta sigma award given to the freshman living group which attained the highest academic average was presented to dravo section wmch had an average of 2.702 norman h beamer 68 peter g.berg 68 william c hunter 68 carl w mank 68 and p kennard wright 111 68 were presented the tua beta phi award for the freshman engineering students who have achieved the highest average all attained 4.00 averages the 1066 epitome dedication wms made to charles w brennan dean of students bob adelaar 66 donald proctor 66 and charles lane 66 were double winners of athletic awards adelaar accepted the eastern col lege conference trophy for scholarship and athletic prowess he also won the beta theta pi cup for all-around athletic attainment proctor accepted the class of 1907 trophy and the ernesta drinker cup and medal as the most outstanding member of the varsity lacrosse squad lane won the lehigh long distance trophy and the peter j mor ris v memorial trophy as the most outstanding member of the varsity swimming squad the president's trophy for the living group scoring the highest number of points ln intramural athletic competition was awarded to beta theta pi fraternity two-time ncaa wrestling champion mike caruso 67 accepted the george j feuerbach trophy as the most outstanding varsity wrestler while two-time national runnerup joe peritore 67 was given the lehigh home club award for brilliance on the mat other major awards went to william machmer 68 rifle pat how lett 67 basketball art thomas 67 baseball hugh willis 67 sailing bob lowman 68 basketball robert hodgson 66 soccer dave egelston 67 fencing dick astleford 69 swimming harold yeich 66 football linden stuart id 66 hockey bob malllmson 68 tennis larry succop 66 cross-country gary lelnberger 69 freshman wrestling george rosenfeld 68 track and field dick smith 66 track and field mike rellly 67 baseball and donald cook 66 golf voters few changes fail the referendums to increase the size of arcadia and establish a weighted vote system for arcadia elections failed to pass ln last week's elections because 253 students failed to vote james miller 68 elections chairman said the problem lay ln the fact that seniors are not interested ln class elections only 54 seniors voted in the referendums he said that apparently referendums are difficult to pass during class elections another problem which miller saw was that there was not much time to bring the referendums to the students attention because the motions were only recently passed by arcadia miller said that arcadia elections m december will be the next time the students will vote he suggested that more voting places may be part of the solution for more votes the cost of the elections would be increased however he said those voting however , approved by more than the necessary two-thirds majority increasing arcadia from 16 to 20 members there were 928 votes for and 103 against with 59 indicating no choice arcadia had felt that the burden of com mittee work on the members necessitated the increase ln membership the referendum would have to be passed before arcadia elections next december to affect the increase the weighted - vote system referendum also had the two thirds majority with 735 for 197 against and 159 abstentions this system was used for last week's elections arcadia had indicated it wanted the faster voting procedure instead of the hare system for its own elections the freshman class had the largest percentage of its voters turn out with almost twice as many votes as the sophomore or junior classes the 570 votes of the freshman the 299 votes of the sophomores the 248 votes of the juniors and the 54 votes of the seniors totalled 1,171 — 253 short of the needed 50 per cent of the 2,857 undergraduates top athletes - bill leckonby university director of athletics talks with from left to right frank pacquin chosen top freshman scholar-athlete bob adolaar winner of the university scholar-athlete award and pat howlett picked as best junior on the basketball team at tha flag pole day ceremonies morse stennis speak at ' berg by dan gladding two u s democratic senators wayne l morse of oregon and john c stennis of mississippi gave several definite proposals for changing american foreign policy m a forum before 1,000 persons at muhlenberg college saturday afternoon stennis who said he was taking a position of substantial support of our present viet nam policy advocated first and foremost a national decision that it is our purpose to win new and stronger measures are necessary morse who ls generally known as a critic of the administration's foreign policy wants a new open-door policy toward china he delivered a talk concerned primarily with red china " i be lieve we should initiate a calculated sustained and overt effort to rebuild normal relations between our two countries he said it has become respectable to point out that isolation is a l»ad thing commencement questionnaires the deadline for turning m senior commencement publicity questionnaires and pictures to the student activities desk m the uni versity center has been extended until 5 p.m to morrow commencement ques tionnaires are used by the office of public informa tion m publicizing the stu dent's graduation ln his hometown newspapers seniors who already have returned thequestlonnalre but failed to include photo graphs are urged to bring m pictures of themselves before the deadline date each photograph should be identified on the back with the student's full name additional commencement forms are available at the office of public inform ation for prospective grad uates who may have mislaid them see stennis page 6
