brown and white vol 78 no 7 rn iihi loi^iiiikiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiini in imiiiiiii bethlehem pa tuesday october 11 1966 866-0331 founder's day 265 degrees are awarded by dan gladding president w deming lewis conferred degrees on 265 students during the eighty-eighth annual founder's day ceremonies sunday afternoon in packer memorial chapel honorary degrees were conferred on dr anton tedesko consulting engineer david a randall librarian of the lilly library at the uni versity of indiana and dr frederick settz president of the national academy of sciences seitz also delivered the commencement address seitz said it is safe to say that the greatest constraints on the development of science and science-based technology in our country originate in tradition he said that the constraints on our scientific endeavor can be pointed up by the differences in the traditional atti tudes and background of science in europe and the u s looking at the developments of science in europe seitz said " the two characteristics highly important for science namely a deep interest in both practical and philosophical affairs made evi dent on the one hand by the re markable successes in temperate climate agriculture which per mitted the establishment of urban communities and in the other by the establishment of universities were highly developed well before the crusades " by the time the great books of alexandrian science were turned over to european society in tin twelfth and thirteenth cen turies the ground was not only fertile for absorbing them but for transmuting them into tools which would eventually be able to add fuel to the industrial revolution examining the national history of the u s in regard to science relative to europe's seitz noted that while the u s shared the european's respect for practical ih w photo hy ho(ihosian founder's day fire in the chemistry building was caused by the explosion of a refriger ator in the organic chemistry laboratory members of the university glee club discovered the fire on their way to founder's day ceremonies bethlehemites knock noise parties stopped saturday's party sponsored by the six centennial residence halls ended abruptly when the bethlehem police arrived and silenced the band apparently residents from as far away as wall street on beth lehem's north side complained of noise coming from south mountain police arrived around 1:00 a.m and asked the band to quiet things down immediately after they left the bandmembers - five young men from rutgers who call them selves the zoo - along with their three go - go girls started a marathon performance of " shout which lasted for over twenty minutes the bethlehem police returned and ordered the band to end their performance immediately b w photo by carvill quiet down demand the bethlehem police at saturday night's centennial houses party bethlehem residents from across the river were awakened at i 00 a.m to the beat of the zoo the five man rutgers band hired for the occassion fire hits chem lab by marty marasco a fire in the organic chemistry laboratory of the chemistry building sunday afternoon caused damage to the room and com pletely destroyed the refrigera tor in which the fire started the fire was discovered by several members of the university glee club who were passing the building on their way to the founders day exercises in packer memorial church scott alexender 70 said he and other members of the glee club heard an explosion and ran down in time to see flames reaching to the top of a window i ran in and grabbed a fire extinguisher while ken shupp c6b sounded the fire alarm in the building other members of the glee club and voveralgradu ate students started fighting the fire the fire started in a refrigera tor in the laboratory in which certain organic solvents were kept an explosion caused the refrigerator door to open and bottles of chemicals were scattered in the room one bottle blown into another room across the hall the fire quickly spread to several boxes on top of the refri gerator when the bethlehem fire dept arrived the lire was out according to james stuart a graduate student who helped fight the fire captain john coleman of the fire dept said he was not sure of the cause of the fire " i think it was a faulty refrigerator ami not faulty wiring there appears to be nothing wrong with the wiring i am calling it a chemical fire in my report said coleman it was a pretty good fire and it was lucky that there wasn't more damage and that no one was hurt fighting the blaze he said morris a nschel a graduate stu dent said he was on the second floor when he heard the alarm i ran downstairs and grabbed the notes for my research paper and slipped on the floor my jacket was burned but i recovered the notes ansehel was finishing up the last experiment on his ph.d research paper and the notes were his only record " the recovery off he notes was lucky said one graduate stu dent " their destruction would have meant the destruction of a year of morris work this is the second fire in the chemistry huildim in less than three months on july 22 john mofhosiuii 07 was working in one of the organic labs wl»n some benzene caught on fire lie was enveloped in flames and suffered second and third degree burns planned sidewalks extend from u.c plans to build a path from the university center to packard lab and to repair the path from trie v%c to the lihrurv are being formed robert numbers superintendent of buildings and grounds said that the main obstruction to these programs was lack or monev prof thomas e jackson chairman of the faculty safety committee said that 50,000 has been allocated for campus safety improvement he said he failed to understand the lack of progress on such plans as the building of the paths jackson said that the plans for campus safety improvements had perhaps been lost in the face of more important projects as the new arts and science building he said he is planning to meet with numbers sometime this week other plans being discussed are a path from the alumni memorial building to the u.c better lighting in such places as sayre park and a path from the centennial houses to lamherton hall kecent campus safety improvements are improved lighting from the lookout to the upper campus roads new concrete steps from the centennial houses to taylor gymnasium and better lighting facilities in parking lots see tradition page 8
