president hits control exercised by foreign dictatorships lehigh students and visit ing delegates feature 8 group sessions a total of 66 awards 21 of them bronze plaques for first and second place in 10 classifications was made to secondary school publications of pennsylvania and new jersey at the closing session of lehigh's sev enth annual scholastic press con ference this afternoon the awards were made by dr wray h congdon dean of under graduates who presided at the afternoon session in the absence of the conference director prof dale h gramley who is ill for the first time since the le high contests have been held a tie obtained in one classification of the contest in this case the york high weekly of york pa and the broadcaster of hershey high school tied for the second place plaque in class a of the newspa per contest of the 10 first place plaques seven were won by pennsylvania schools and three by new jersey schools the second place plaques were divided eight for pennsyl vania schools and three for new jersey schools only one paper repeats only one publication repeated as first place winner in its class that was ye ridlyan magazine of ridley park high school in four other classes the first and second place winners in 1939 reversed pla ces this year these were the spotlight of cranford n j and the nutshell of moorestown n j in class b magazines the quaker challenge of quakertown and the student voice of flemington n j in the mimeograph class the shady side news of shady side academy and the mercersburg news of mercers burg academy in the preparatory school newspaper class and the perm charter magazine of william perm charter school philadelphia and the skirmisher of bordentown military academy in preparatory school magazine class judges for the continued on page four total enrollment of the 194 schools whose publications were entered in the contests this year is 179,300 according to figures com piled by professor gramley the largest school is northeast h s philadelphia with 5,300 students next is the william l dickinson h s jersey city with 4,970 pupils first arrivals last evening were the four delegates from dale high johnstown and the twelve from etna high et na the fellows bunked in as sorted fraternity houses scat tered here and there on the hill and thusly learned about fraternal life a little differ ent from the movie version a total of 56 publications in the two states have the advantage of instruction in journalism the other 137 publications which ans wered this question in a question naire among contest entries do not have journalism courses the vital importance of main taining the right of free press and free speech in a democracy was stressed by dr clement c will iams president of the university in his opening address to delegates attending the morning session of the seventh annual scholastic press conference in packard audi torium daily we observe the tragic de ception of great and cultured peo ples by their totalitarian govern ments through a controlled press stated president williams a country without a free press be comes subject to the ambitious ca price of an unscrupulous fanatic who by substituting poisoned pro paganda for correct information and open discussion can fan the fires of nationalism into a ravaging assault upon helpless and peaceful neighbors a free press is a concommitant more than 475 delegates from 20 new jersey schools and 82 penn sylvania schools attended the press conference today according to a hasty count at the registration tables in packard lobby at noon the largest delegation in the his tory of the conference was regis tered this year it was the group from slatington high school and comprised 51 persons . the first group to arrive was the delegation of 11 from etna high school accompanied by four fa culty members the seven etna students arrived in bethlehem last night after eight hours on the road second largest delegation com prised approximate ly 500 high school journalists this morning in packard auditorium stressed the advantages of a demo cratic society and the importance of journalism as a main factor of democracy you should go on as you have erne here today dean carothers told the delegates attending the seventh annual lehigh scholastic press conference look for a nor mal life as you have a right to do keep interested in your school work and don't let the demoraliza tion of the world distract you the lehigh economist advised the young journalists to give their in terest in writing an opportunity to develop and to keep trying in that field for every writing genius like shelly poe o'henry and keats there are hundreds of writers who must train unceasingly dean car others said writing is a hard job and one is easily discouraged but you do not know what talent however small is lying latent in you dean carothers said that news papers still remain the crystalliz es of our thought and one of the most important factors in demo cratic society says liberty means progress that by preserving democracy we are protecting peaceful and or derly change and are escaping the ravages of a wild and bloody up rising was expressed by dr ache son the advance of the human race has not been continuous and steady dr acheson said there have been lags but liberty and progress coincide the periods of stagnation in our civilization have come under ad verse forms of government dr acheson declared people must be free to think he said the united states has gone through the greatest revolution in the chapter of history
