brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday november 15 1966 866033 maaammmmmmwm vol 78 - no 16 mmmmtm possibilities examined by dan gladding for new grad school over the past year a special consultant of the lehigh valley community council has been studying the possibility of establishing a graduate school of social work at lehigh his report presented at a meeting of all interested parties saturday will be studied by the university board of trustees and the com munity council dr ernest f witte dean of the school of social work at san diego state college m california and consultant to the community council said it is the general agreement on the part of those concerned that a school of social work should be established at lehigh university and that the university the lehigh valley community council and the lehigh valley chapter of the national association pf social workers nasw move jointly to establish the necessary organization and machinery to plan the required action witte added i think lehigh would make a very sound host for the development of a graduate school of social work it would make a more sound host than many of the institutions that now house graduate schools of social work the plan presented by witte calls for two years of graduate work leading to the masters degree ln social work study would be divided into the areas of human behavior and social environment social policy and services social work methods and a sequence m field instruction dr glenn christensen provost and vice president of lehigh said lehigh university will work with the community to find a way to fulfill the social work school needs of the area and added that the school if established would be a joint responsibility of lehigh and the community and would only be possible through continued com munity support miss joanna akerhuys chair man of the lehigh valley chapter of the nasw said that there are now only three schools of social . study i n pennsylvania bryn mawr college university of pennsylvania and university of pittsburgh in making his report to the community council witte said that the lehigh valley has a good cross section of social agencies that could provide from 50 to 80 field placements of students he also said that lehigh being near population centers would not find it hard to attract personnel new date set for referendum the arcadia referendum originally scheduled for nov ig-18 has been postponed until dec 7-9 the referendum which has l>een delayed due to a lack of time ln which to publicize the issues will now be held at the same time as the arcadia elections harvey l york 67 president of arcadia said the referendum ls a must for arcadia and as much publicity as possible is needed for the referendum to be passed 50 percent of the student body must vote m the election and two-thirds must vote affirmatively we are very hopeful that the amendments will be approved there are three issues which will be placed before the student body for approval these involve the expansion of arcadia a change m the method by which arcadians are elected and a transfer of the attendance regulations at arcadia meetings from the constitution to the by-laws lower east side tops second campus drive the second campus chest drive ended today with the lower east side of m&m taking all-campus honors with an average donation of 9.25 per man living groups were asked to contribute to the campus chest and the 10 living groups with the largest contributions per man will receive seating preference for the lafayette game taking second place m living group contributions was dravo c-3 followed by m&m a-3 taylor w-l and theu xi as for friday the contributions amounted to about 1,400 the lower east side raised the winning total by printing the second edition of the lehigh lafayette history booklet and offering it to the students for a donation o the campus chest this is the second year ln a row that the m&m section has taken all-campus honors the assessment per man m the section amounted to only about 1.25 to afford their victory earlier this month the campus chest raised nearly 1,800 m the ugly man on campus contest m which mcconn's " buff took individual honors b a w photo by evans > beat bucknell was the frequent cry at last friday's annual pep rally this rally helped to build up the greatest spirit shown by thc student body this season sncc leader negro exploited " the course of this country has been one of the negro against the racist system declared robert fullllove new jersey field director of s.n.c.c thursday night fullllove who graduated from colgate m 196g with degrees ln philosophy and religion said that as the system now stands the power ln this country the power of money and of the law lies entirely jn the hands of the whiles the individual negro has no power not even ln the vote he said he has always been exploited by the white man fullllove indicated that the only way m which negro people can wield power is to ban together he said that voting rights legis lation has apparently given the negro unprecedented power but actually this power is a myth he pointed out that 33 per cent of the negro voting population m mississippi voted for mrs lurleen wallace and 40 percent m georgia voted for a segrega tionist fullllove ssld the reason ror this was the negroes fear of losing what he already has society has put the negro m such a hole that he must riot to voice fears and anxieties fullllove ssld ln commenting on black violence he said the violence itself is easily stomped out hut its causes go unnoticed integration is a great cathar sis but as tt stands now it doesn't speak to the needs of the black man fullllove said that token legislation from token politicians will not solve the negro problem fullllove ln referlng to the recent election said that white backlash is a myth and that " racism just defends itself he added that it was incomprehen sible and tragic that the color of a man's skin could influence elections to important public offices " the lot of the negro has gone down steadily for ihe last twenty years this is due mostly to the cybernetic revolution fullllove declared he also cited the fact that 45 per cent of negroes with high school diplomas earn less than the average income of a white high school dropout the forces of discrimination and lack of jobs through automation are combining to lower the sundard of living ror tiie average negro man fullllove refused to comment on s.n.c.c's future role m the civil rights revolution he said that the
