mmmm vol 78 ne 18 ws:..:w:w bethlehem pa tuesday november 22 1966 866-0331 brown and white new grad school talks begin by dan gladding the question of whether or not lemgh will be the host for a graduate school of social work ls now being discussed by various community agencies if there is a forthcoming satisfactory arrangement for the program ths proposal will eventually be pre sented to lehigh dr glenn j christensen provost and vice president of lehigh said friday the lemgh valley community council was aware of a need for a graduate school to prepare social workers m the lehigh valley christensen said a year ago we said that we would explore the possibilities but made no commitment at a meeting at that time it was agreed that lemgh will work with the com munity council to determine precisely what that need is and will work with the community m any way appropriate to it and within its resources to find ways to meet the needs of the community christensen said now that the first step has been taken — that of a feasibility study undertaken by dr ernest witte dean of the school of social work at san diego state college the next step is to have representatives of lemgh the community council and the lemgh valley chapter of the national association of social workers study witte's proposals what will come out of that conference no one knows at this moment christensen said if arrangements are satisfactory and a way of funding the program is found ths president's office will propose the establishment of the graduate school of social work to the university's committee en educational policy which will make recommendations to ths faculty aa a whole if approved by the faculty the proposal will go for final approval to the board of trustees christensen explained it is not particularly strange for the impetus ln the formation of a graduate school to come from outside a university christensen said but as far aa i know this is the first time this has happened at lehigh university he said that the new school would offer a master of social work degree which ls a professional degree not a graduate degree a professional degree is given for the intensive study of one discipline whiles graduate degree ls the result of a more general study christensen said that lehigh ls a member of the middle states association of colleges and secondary schools wmch ls m charge of the periodic evaluation and accreditation of member schools our next evaluation is scheduled for 1969-70 at that time we shall have to submit for evaluation our total educational program including any new programs initiated since our last previous evaluation he said there is an explicit rule for the introduction of new programs at association colleges he said any new program is automatically covered by ths institution's accreditation for a period of two years at ths end of that time the institution must satisfy ths higher com mission that the new program la making satisfactory progress toward earning accreditation onus own merits or the accreditation of the entire institution is called into question we simply will nut go into a new program unless we're convinced that the program ls sound and worth accrediting and we know where ths funds sre coming from christensen added another problem facing the formation of the school ls the financial one costs for the first three years of operation of the program will be approximately 33,000 and will continue after that at 100,000 a year the costs after the first three years represents the interest on an endowment of three million dollars christensen aid christensen nvde it clear in a recent report to tha community council that this money must come from new sources as all current funds are being used for current programs in addition the figures christensen used were only the direct operating costs for the program a good rule of thumb is that the indirect costs amount to about half the direct costs of salaries and wages he said the indirect costs will have to be absorbed by the university members ratify sds constitution the newly formed lehigh chapter of the students for a democratic society approved a constitution and established a committee to see dr w demlng lewis at their meeting thursday afternoon dana hodgdon 68 introduced a constitution but several revisions were made before it was accepted one revision was to the beginning sentence of the section stating the organization's objective originally the sentence said lehigh students for a democratic society ls an association of young people on the left the group eliminated the phrase on the left because of the vagueness of the phrase and because the society wished to found the organization on a broader spectrum another minor change made was having the members pay only local dues instead of the requirement to pay both national and local dues hodgdon asked members to study the constitution for any other possible revisions before it would l>e presented in the near future to the student life committee for approval in other business mike ralsbeck 70 spoke against the subpoen aing of such universities as michigan and berkeley by the house committee on un-american activities to submit membership lists of various student organization as sds and the dv hols clubs he urged university support of a letter sent to most of the nations colleges and universities by the american civil liberties union urging them not to cooperate ln congressional investigations against such clubs and particularly not to hand over their membership lists a committee was established with ralsbeck ln charge to see president lewis and to talk with him about such a university policy it was also decided to try to get dr arthur brody
