a financial success the attendance surpassing the previous record of 170 couples set by the winter dance of the council free punch was available to all who were present dancing was to the music of bud the third annual anthracite conference will begin a two day session here thursday morning when over 500 delegates will meet in six sessions the conference which is open to all students and faculty will begin at 10:00 o'clock thursday morning in packard lab oratory when howard eckfeldt professor of mining engineering and chairman of the conference will open the session by introduc ing president clement c williams who will give the address of wel come according to prof eckfeldt the principal speaker of the confer ence will be harry c spillman lecturer and director of personnel of the national association of manufacturers mr spillman is the speaker of the banquet which is to be held at 7 00 p m in the ho tel bethlehem lehigh men on program several members of the faculty and alumni of lehigh will give papers during the course of the conference among those who are to speak are a copeland callen dean of the college of engineering burgess h jennings associate pro fessor of mechanical engineering eric sinkinson associate professor of fuel technology and cadwall ader evans jr 01 vice-president of the hudson coal company the purpose of the conference is to present conferees for consid eration the recent and rapid tech nological progress being made in production distribution and util ization of pensylvania anthracite the main conference speaker mr spillman was educated in bethel college and bowling green business university both in ken tucky the lecturer's native state and at harvard university he was for many years the educational and employment manager of the remington typewriter company mr spillman is also the author of several books among them being making the business speech eff ective and the aristocracy of service the latter of which is one of the best-sellers in the non-fic tion field as a lecturer mr spill man has delivered more than 3,000 addresses before educational and busines audiences throughout america and the eastern hemis phere lehigh assembly departmental conferences were held for the various curricula in the afternoon visits and demon strations were held in the various buildings and departments a re ception and tea sponsored by the evening closed the pro gram dr harry w chase chancellor of new york university will be the commencement speaker on mon day june 10 instead of dr alex ander stoddard superintendent of philadelphia schools it was an nounced by president clement c williams at a regular monthly faculty meeting yesterday after noon in the alumni memorial building the change was made necessary when dr williams learned from dr stoddard that it would be im possible lor him to deliver the commencement address because of an unforeseen technicality which developed after he had consented to speak at lehigh philip m palmer dean of the college of arts and sciences an nounced to the faculty that in ad dition to arts seniors 15 students in other colleges have voluntarily asked permission to take the car negie endowment examination on may 16 and 17 a total of over 70 students is expected to take the carnegie tests announces committee members dr williams also announced the following presidential appoint change in the sys tem of athletic administration was accepted with a unanimous vote by arcadia last night this new system provides for three types of insignia for participation in three classes of sport the appointment of a committee to consider generally all athletic administration in re gard to awards and the appoint ment of a sub committee in each sport for the selection of men who are to be given awards the new plan divides all inter collegiate athletics participation in to three groups in group i to in clude football wrestling and bas ketball the insignia will be a let ter 7 x 6 x iy 4 " woven into a sweater in group 11 including baseball soccer swimming tennis and track the award will be a let ter 5 x 5 x 1 woven into a sweater which is the same award made for all university sponsored sports at the present time in group 111 including rifle cross country laqrosse hockey fencing and golf the award is to be a felt letter 5 x 5 x 1 j v.'s to get awards all managers are to receive the same recognition awarded to the particular team concerned a new provision has been in cluded in the plan to recognize junior varsity competition and re quirements have been set accord ingly at the present time the three junor varsity teams basketball wrestling and football will receive a felt letter 4 x 4 x 1 this system will be supplemented to give awards for any other junior varsity teams when the program is extended to allow for the estab lishment of other junior varsity clubs the head cheerleader will be awarded a group i letter with a megaphone inserted while the as sistant cheerleader will receive a group ii letter with the same iden tification the system of committees set up a new idea in lehigh athletic admnistration provides for a com mittee on intercollegiate athletic awards consisting of four faculty and four student members the faculty members selected were dr claude g beardslee professor of moral and religious philosophy dean wray h congdon e ken neth smiley director of admiss ions and glen w harmeson di rector of athletics the student representatives will be a senior member of arcadia a member of o d x senior honorary society and the presidents of the junior and senior classes has full authority the duty of this committee will be to settle controversies which cannot be settled in the sub committees for the individual sports this committee will be the final authority on athletic ques tions presented to them the plan further provides for sub-committees in each sport to consist of the head coach in each sport the captain manager and director of athletics the duty of these sub-commit tees shall be to " go over require ments according to the specified rules and regulations at the end of the season after checking the team member for these require ments and considering his all aruond attitude for the year this committee shall recommend the men on the squad deserving of letters another new idea incorporated in the plan allows for the provis ion of special recognition for those men who in the estimation of the sub-committee have been t val ue to a team although not qualify ing for the regular award or a junior varsity insignia for this group the regular group 111 let ters may be awarded service letters may be awarded to those men who have been out for intercollegiate varsity compe william c walker association of manufacturers mr spillman is the speaker of the banquet which is to be held at 7 00 p m in the ho tel bethlehem lehigh men on program several members of the faculty and alumni of lehigh will give papers during the course of the conference among those who are to speak are a copeland callen dean of the college of engineering burgess h jennings associate pro fessor of mechanical engineering eric sinkinson associate professor of fuel technology and cadwall ader evans jr 01 vice-president of the hudson coal company the purpose of the conference is to present conferees for consid eration the recent and rapid tech nological progress being made in production distribution and util ization of pensylvania anthracite the main conference speaker mr spillman was educated in bethel college and bowling green business university both in ken tucky the lecturer's native state and at harvard university he was for many years the educational and employment manager of the remington typewriter company mr spillman is also the author of several books among them being making the business speech eff ective and the aristocracy of service the latter of which is one of the best-sellers in the non-fic tion field as a lecturer mr spill man has delivered more than 3,000 addresses before educational and busines audiences throughout america and the eastern hemis phere lehigh the evening closed the pro gram dr harry w chase chancellor of new york university will be the commencement speaker on mon day june 10 instead of dr alex ander stoddard superintendent of philadelphia schools it was an nounced by president clement c williams at a regular monthly faculty meeting yesterday after noon in the alumni memorial building the change was made necessary when dr williams learned from dr stoddard that it would be im possible lor him to deliver the commencement address because of an unforeseen technicality which developed after he had consented to speak at lehigh philip m palmer dean of the college of arts and sciences an nounced to the faculty that in ad dition to arts seniors 15 students in other colleges have voluntarily asked permission to take the car negie endowment examination on may 16 and 17 a total of over 70 students is expected to take the carnegie tests announces committee members dr williams also announced the following presidential appoint ments to standing committees for the next academic year j lyn ford beaver acting head of the department of electrical engineer ing to the athletic eligibility com mittee dr bradford willard head of the department of geology to the executive committee of the graduate faculty dr loyal v bewley newly elected head of the department of electrical engineer ing was appointed to the institute of research george b curtis registrar and dr max petersen professor of physics to the committee on lec tures dr j burke severs associ ate professor of english library committee and dr gilbert e . doan head of the department of metallurgical engineering and dr bewley were appointed to the committee on degrees president williams commended the unusual attainments of the lehigh university r o t c unit during the past year he also prais ed the development and continu ance of programs by the combined musical clubs and also in conjunc tion with those of lafayette mor avian cedar crest and muhlen berg has been chancellor since 1933 dr chase the new commence ment speaker has been chancellor of new york university since 1933 previously to that he was presi dent of the university of illinois and was change in the sys tem of athletic administration was accepted with a unanimous vote by arcadia last night this new system provides for three types of insignia for participation in three classes of sport the appointment of a committee to consider generally all athletic administration in re gard to awards and the appoint ment of a sub committee in each sport for the selection of men who are to be given awards the new plan divides all inter collegiate athletics participation in to three groups in group i to in clude football wrestling and bas ketball the insignia will be a let ter 7 x 6 x iy 4 " woven into a sweater in group 11 including baseball soccer swimming tennis and track the award will be a let ter 5 x 5 x 1 woven into a sweater which is the same award made for all university sponsored sports at the present time in group 111 including rifle cross country laqrosse hockey fencing and golf the award is to be a felt letter 5 x 5 x 1 j v.'s to get awards all managers are to receive the same recognition awarded to the particular team concerned a new provision has been in cluded in the plan to recognize junior varsity competition and re quirements have been set accord ingly at the present time the three junor varsity teams basketball wrestling and football will receive a felt letter 4 x 4 x 1 this system will be supplemented to give awards for any other junior varsity teams when the program is extended to allow for the estab lishment of other junior varsity clubs the head cheerleader will be awarded a group i letter with a megaphone inserted while the as sistant cheerleader will receive a group ii letter with the same iden tification the system of committees set up a new idea in lehigh athletic admnistration provides for a com mittee on intercollegiate athletic awards consisting of four faculty and four student members the faculty members selected were dr claude g beardslee professor of moral and religious philosophy dean wray h congdon e ken neth smiley director of admiss ions and glen w harmeson di rector of athletics the student representatives will be a senior member of arcadia a member of o d x senior honorary society and the presidents of the junior and senior classes has full authority the duty of this committee will be to settle controversies which cannot be settled in the sub committees for the individual sports this committee will be the final authority on athletic ques tions presented to them the plan further provides for sub-committees in each sport to consist of the head coach in each sport the captain manager and director of athletics the duty of these sub-commit tees shall be to " go over require ments according to the specified rules and regulations at the end of the season after checking the team member for these require ments and considering his all aruond attitude for the year this committee shall recommend the men on the squad deserving of letters another new idea incorporated in the plan allows for the provis ion of special recognition for those men who in the estimation of the sub-committee have been t val ue to a team although not qualify ing for the regular award or a junior varsity insignia for this group the regular group 111 let ters may be awarded service letters may be awarded to those men who have been out for intercollegiate varsity compe william c walker
