brown and white v01.78 n0 20 bethlehem pa tuesday december 6 1966 866-0331 students honor steck at meet by lynn havach the freshman wrestlers had just left the mat there was a mil in the activities and he stood talking with several of the press corps and members of the athletic department at one end of the grace hall balcony when his name was called by steve wilcox 67 on the floor he looked about quizzically as the audience some 3,700 strong in the swelter ing smoke-filled air broke into applause and cheering prof john steckbeck made his way slowly through the congratulating students faculty members and spectators down the far aisle and across the mat to the scorer's table steck steck steck was the rhythmic chant that rebounded from the bright lights on the arena's celling onto the broad shoulders of lehigh's physical education department head hands crossed in front of himself steckbeck stood erect off to one side as wilcox read the inscription of the plaque which he was about to receive the inscription concerned itself wtthsteckbeck»s constant encouragement of athletics at the university and also of his continuing efforts to build and instill spirit for lehigh's athletic teams but steckbeck and most of the other persons in grace hall knew the inscription and the plaque stood for many long nights planning intramural schedules wondering whether he had all the equipment needed for a three day national slovak slet and if the freshmen could find enough wood for their bonfire most of the people also knew that the one-week bermuda vacation paid for by contributions from to the men of lehigh . how does one say thank you i choose to say it by continued service to the men for whom i have so much respect.the men of lehigh at the moment of acceptance i was in no condition emotionally to say anything the honor you bestowed upon me saturday carried with it your love your understand ing your assurance and obove all the true spirit of lehigh i will always be grateful to each and every one of you for allowing me to share a moment of pure greatness my wife and i say thank you gentlemen steck m class cabinets ifc and rhc was not just s gesture with no meaning if there ever was a person who deserved a vacation it is steckbeck but it is also steckbeck who will feel rather strange about leaving because he might miss something the award caught him enough by surprise he couldn't find the words ss easily as he usually does when he's standing in front of 1,000 screaming students at a pep rally i am at a loss for words he said and fnr a loud mouth like me that's something but the vacation caught him even more off guard when wilcox told him about it he halted for a few seconds as if the ceiling of grace hall had just collapsed in front of him then took the envelope containing his reservations and ran out the people knew what was going through his mind as he exited hurriedly to the persons standing nearest the scorer's table his misted eyes told the entire story he had barely gotten through the door aad into the hallway when the lehigh wrestlers scooted onto the mat and immediately captivated the audience wilcox stood at the table holding the microphone wondering whether steckbeck would return to say s few more words after a few seconds wilcox knew the answer he shrugged his shoulders smiled and handed the mike back to tha announcer steckbeck had retired quickly to the training room where he stood alone leaning on the counter staring down at his plaque someone came in shook his hand and said you deserve it steck beck could say very little but he managed i had to get out of there ban photo by butt prof john steck steckbeck is presented with a plaque by steve wilcox 67 in behalf of the student body in appreciation for many years of dedicated service the plaque and a bermuda vacation were presented saturday before the varsity wrestling meet lsd debate thursday by donald palmer leary vs louria is lsd the doorway to a universal religious awareness or is lt a taboo to be suppressed and eventually forgotten this question will be debated at 8:30 p.m thursday between dr timothy leary and dr donald louria at muhlenberg college leary is today's foremost proponent of psychedelic drugs he received a b.a ln psychology at the university of alabama and a ph d at the university oi california at berkely since then he has been an assistant professor of u c.'s school of medicine at sanfrancisco and a lecturer on clinical psychology at harvard leary had his first experience with drugs in mexico in 1960 when he ate some sacred mushrooms which contained psychedelic chemicals he returned to harvard to experi ment with other consciousness - expanding drugs morning glory seeds nutmeg marijuana peyote mescaline and a drug originally developed in 1938 as an anesthetic lsd lysergic acid diethylamide since then leary has taken lsd 311 times by his own admission he claims that it has given him understanding to the basic questions of life he says that lsd could enable each person to realize that he ls not a game-playing robot put on earth to be given a social security number and to be spun on the assembly of school college career insurance ' funeral goodbye leary a hindu says j that there are two solutions to life to give up or to seek immortality his own choice is to keep life going louria an ardent opponent of the stand of uncontrolled use of lsd received his b.s cum laude and m.d cum laude at harvard he is affiliated with the infectious disease laboratory at new york city's bellvue hospital louria is a recognized authority on narcotic drugs he is chair man of the new york county medical society's subcommittee on narcotic drugs the 1965 chairman and 1966 president of the new york state council on drug addiction and is a member of 18 other medical committees and societies in the debate louria will agree with the medical opponents of the drug who contend that the potential risk involved in taking lsd under non clinical con ditions ls high they point to the numerous publicized cases in which individuals have been killed or rendered permanently insane because of effects of lsd residence halls heads select best candidates by louis neureuter residence halls section presidents have singled out five arcadia candidates as the best candidates living in residence halls accord ing to jim winchester rhc arcadla representative ralph kidder marty klein joseph shaffer howard white and ric wilson were selected at a meeting in mcconn house tuesday evening winchester emphasized that being singled out by residence halls section presidents was not an rhc endorsement none of the other candidates were asked to drop from the race and campaigning will be as usual the section presidents however will report to their sections that five candidates were singled out as being the best all 13 residence halls arcadia candidates were asked to speak at tuesday's meeting after questioning the candidates the section presidents voted for the candidates they thought were best shaffer said that he expects the singling out to definitely help his campaign but that lt will not alter his plans of personal contact with the electorate white would only comment that the singling out could not hurt elections begin polls in u.c arcadia elections start tomorrow with 35 candidates seeking the nine at large elective seats that are open students voting in the elections which will end friday will also be asked to vote on the four referendum issues that arcadia has proposed voting will take place in the university center ac tons from the post office from 10 a.m to 7 p.m this week all students may vote hut must present their id cards the four referendum issues students will vote on are the proposal of an arcadia roving fund the fund will use money received from the sale of 1 student activities cards to support arcadia activities that incur losses the cards will allow owners a discount for admission to these events — the proposal to increase arcadia membership to 20 members from its present 16 the new members will be appointed by ifc rhc and the sophomore and junior class cabinets — the proposal to change arcadia's voting system from the hare system of proportional representation to an easier to administer weighted system the proposal to take arcadia's attendance rules out of the constitution and to put them in the by-laws bft w photo by evans frosh check in with psi upsilon receptionists during sunday's open houses for town fraternities the open house day was the second of six scheduled to give freshman ample opportunity to visit most of lehigh's 31 fraternities
