recommended by the social codes committee and the judiciary committee at its meeting tuesday night the council passed a motion to give a revised social code for fraternities revealed for the first time to the student life committee the code drawn up in an effort to both recognize and perpetuate the responsibility of each member of the ifc are that no party chaperons be needed for house parties no house be required to relinquish their facilities for female guests during houseparty but that chaperons have to be furnished if the house decides to have the women guests stay at the fraternity also assistant dean of student life william quay is to be notified about bands and parties one day before the event is to be scheduled women guests are to be allowed in chapter houses from noon to midnight sunday through thursday and until 2 a.m friday and saturday and no parties are to be given during an all-university event unless special permission is granted in another move the council voted 25-3 against exonerating four freshman and delta tau delta for an illegal rushing incident as a result the fraternity will lose six hours rushing time in the appeal by the four fresh men and jbhnathan elkus professor of music who appealed for the four several restric tions were placed against both parties delta tau delta will not be allowed to rush until 7 p.m on the first day and they will not be allowed to pledge these four freshmen until after second semester the four fresh men will not be allowed to pledge any other house until march 1 thanks congrats arcadia xx bows by peter quandt arcadia's final meeting wed nesday night came to a close with a chorus of congratulations thank you's and wishes of good luck to arcadia xxi early in the meeting several items were tabled and willed to the new administration headed by marty cohen 68 the items were discussions for revision of the freshman life committee for minor changes in the by-laws and of a proposal by bill lowe 67 chairman of the academic policy committee to hire a stu dent computer programmer to work with the registrar in com puterizing the exam schedule also two motions of the fin ance and calendar committee were passed one concerned the granting of 85 from the roving fund to help cover the cost of sending used textbooks to students in the south the second motion provided 106 for the students for a dem ocratic society sds for general operating expenses speakers and magazines to be made available to the entire student body metallurgy professor airs views on religion by john seitz l when a person is extremely familiar with a field he often be4teves that the only real truths lie in that field dr alan w pense assist ant of metallurgy told an interfaith council student faculty luncheon tuesday afternoon speaking on the topic " don't knock it unless you've tried it pense said he believes intellectual honesty and intellectual humility should go hand in hand a man who is skilled in one field often assumes he is knowledgable in all fields and makes incorrect judgments due to a lack of knowledge pense added according to pense truth can be found outside of a man's field as well as within he added that " realities are not always measurable and that " truth can come from more than one direction directing his remarks to the faculty members he noted that " people often make statements in the classroom which have ho basis pense insisted that " academic freedom must be coupled with academic responsibility he concluded by saying that the faculty should res trict itself to things which it knows ' turning to religion pense said that faculty members often attack traditional religions on unfair grounds he added that in order for relgion to mean anything it must get down to personal exper ience saying that " there can be no faith without a personal com mittment many parts of religion can't be measured said pense simply because god frequently uses a pathway which is un expected brary attendancebad at 68 meeting a lack of enthusiasm among members of the class of 1968 cabinet was noted tuesday evening by aubrey gladstone president of the class in reply to his question why attendance is poor a member of the cabinet said that attendance might improve if notice of the meetings was given more than a day in advance the cabinet decided that if notices were sent out a week in advance many of the members might forget about the meeting a decision was made to send out two notices one a week before and one the day before the meeting reports were made concerning a proposed lecture by robert kennedy co-sponsored by ifc and the class of 1968 and plans for the class of 1968 spring concert possibilities include the loving spoonful and the temptations housing methods explained with the second semester approaching freshmen and other students are beginning to think about housing for next year assistant dean of residence peter shurtleff recently explained the procedures for ob taining housing in the residence halls shurtleff expects a waiting list for residence hall rooms this year as there has been every year except the year the centennial complex opened the waiting list last year was at one time 90 he said but he noted that later it was cut back considerably freshman and upperclassmen living in residence halls will receive room applications by early march shurtleff said upperclassmen not living in residence halls may obtain applications from the residence halls office at the same time if a student and an upperclass section have made an agreement the student will fill out the application and give it to the section president otherwise the student should return the application to the residence halls office if there is no preference shurtleff stressed that freshmen should try to reach an agreement with a section both for their and the section's good upperclassmen already living in a section and freshmen and others selected by the section will be assigned to their requested section those not selecting a section will be put on a priority list ordered by date of application , after a given date the remaining vacancies are filled from the priority list last year by april 22 we started filling in the va cancies shurtleff said " there were 40 or 50 assigned on this space available basis it has been lehigh policy to have all tenants sign a contract guar anteeing a year of occupancy while there are exceptions made to this rule based on the individual merit of the case last year we felt it was unfair to keep anybody out for a whole year because a man wanted tc stay in the residence halls for only half a year shurtleff said the office of the dean of residence halls will help students find off campus housing if they cannot be given rooms in the residence halls or for any other reason " wve gone overboard to be accommodating he said during the summer vacation we stayed open seven days a week at times helping find apartments last
