brown and white 866-0331 v01.78 no 27 iiiiiyiijmw bethlehem pa - tuesday february 7 1967 rhc to present varied concert b tnllm cpit7 unlike many previous residence halls council concerts which concentrated on one type of music the concert on feb 18 will present two popular recording groups which differ greatlv ln musical style performing first will be eric burdon and the new animals burdon and the original animals capitalized on the popularity or british groups several years ago to establish themselves with american audiences they quickly reached the top with house of the rising sun differing from most english groups the animals sang sour music which captured the american public following their initial success the animals followed with " we gotta get out of this place then came such big sellers as don't let me be misunderstood it's my life and recently don't bring me down however in the summer bf 1966 burdon announced hat the animals were disbanding after nine hit singles and four albums he said that he felt a desire to strike out on his own and try new things recording alone his first single see see rider t>ecame a nationwide smash shortly afterwards burdon began forming a new group known as the new animals the new animals consist of drummer barry jenkln a member of the original animals guitarists johnny welder and vic bragg and bass guitarist vic briggs the performers ln the second art of the concert paul simon and art garfunkel started their careers as strictly folk artists they have varied their style and emerged as one rf the brightest new duos in the musical profession their first recording venture was an album " wednesday morning 3 a.m which contained folk tunes mostly written by simon al though the album wasn't originally successful one of the songs on it " tl>e sounds of silence was re-recorded with a rock beat and released as a single its popularity established the pair in the eric burdon right and the animals are scheduled to perform feb 18 in the first part of the residence halls council's concert in addition to the english group simon and garfunkel will also entertain the audience in grace hall space future lecture scheduled for feb 13 the u.s air force air university aerospace presenta tions team from maxwell air force base ala will discuss a merica's future in space includ ing plans for a trip to the moon in an illustrated presentation at 4 p.m next monday feb 13 in packard lab auditorium the public is invited to attend members of the team of lecturers who will conduct tbe briefing for an audience which will include university air force cadets will include lt co james s wall major robert k potter and capt david l frederick the men have had extensive experience i n air combat and reconnaiasance they will trace the development of our strides in space from our first efforts several years ago to the present the program which will be augmented with colored slides and motion pictures throughout will cover all phases of the united states space program - pro pulsion spacecraft inter planetary probes and plans for a trip to the moon applications available for draft tests applications for the selective service college qualification test are now available at local boards throughout the country the test will be administered on march 11 and 31 and april 8 eligible students who intend to take the test should applv at once to the nearest selective service local board for an application card and a bulletin of information for the test to ensure processing applications must be marked no later than midnight feb 10 applica tions should be mailed to the selective service examining section educational testing service p.o box 988 princeton n.j 08540 according to registrar james h wanger every student who has not taken the test should do so even though a student may only take the test once it is advisable for freshmen and sophomores to take lt as long as persons ln their age group i are being drafted wagner also said that freshmen tend to do best on the test at present local hoards are using either class standing or test scores but according to wagner a switch could he made which would make the test the only criterion in that event students who had not taken the test would l»e likely to be drafted according to the educational testing service which prepares and administers the test it will be greatly to the student's advantage to file his application at once the earlier the student applies the better his chance nf being assigned to the test renter he has chosen because of the possibility that he may be assigned to any of the testing dates it is very important that he list a center and center number for every date on which he will t>e available scores on the test will be sent dtrectly tothe registrant's local board for undergraduates 70 per cent is passing for graduate students passing is 80 tier cent b & w photo by butt next come the rubber hoses ■rushee thomas m dißuggiero faced the rigors of rushing at phi kappa theta fast weekend rushing and fraternity dinner dates will continue this week ending when freshmen sign their bids saturday see rhc page 6 b & w staff applications positions are now open on the brown and white news feature sports photography and copy staffs all interested persons should come to the brown and white office in the basement of the university center at 7 p.m tomorrow all editors will be available for discussion cancellation due to heavy snow classes scheduled for 4 p.m and later today only have been canceled no decision has been made for tomorrow's classes
