lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa - tuesday february 14 1967 866-0331 vol 78 - no 29 solons may disband arcadia associates by marty marasco a motion to disband arcadia associates was presented to arcadia xxi at their first meeting on friday night marty cohen president of arcadia said the move was decided upon by the executive board of arcadia and several of the leaders of arcadia associates while cohen did not state specifically the reason for disbanding the associates he did say tliis will mean that the work previously done by the associates will now be handled by the arcadia committees with which they are most closely connected since the disbanding of arcadia associates ls a change in the by-laws the motion cannot be voted upon for two weeks to fill a gap that would be left by the disbanding of the associates cohen asked arcadia to create an new ideas committee so that people with ideas could bring them to the committee and the committee would consider their feasibility jim winchester 68 was named to head the committee the solons also passed three revisions to the by-laws that had been presented to arcadia xx the first revision makes the corresponding secretary responsible for handling applications and selection of all arcadia appointees the second change was deletion of the ob of publicity from the duties of the recording secretary to fill this void a publicity committee was formed the other change in the by-laws was removing the duties for houseparty judiciary committee from the administration committee another proposed change in the by-laws a revision of the freshman life committee was originally presented to arcadia by jim oyler 67 oyler was present at the meeting to explain the intent of the revision to the new arcadians after some discussion the motion was tabled to give the new arcadians more time to become better acquainted with the proposal in other business arcadia voted to go along with three decisions made by the finance and calendar committee one gave the young republicans 10 to attend a conference the group also agreed to backstop crossroads africa for 800 until the money could be rsised and the third was to give the inter fraternity council permission to sign smokey robinson and tbe miracles for a concert ifc weekend cohen also named the new committee chairmen in addition to winchester they were finance and calendar jeff kapell 68 chairman and guy fisher 69 arcadia appointee publicity bob kaufman 68 development al minskoff 68 lecture al minskoff 68 freshman life bob westerman 68 foreign opportunities emmanuel ticzon 6b also named were conference dennis alexander 68 social controls don kemp 69 academic policy joe shaffer 70 and rick rainin 69 facilities sandy mcconnel 69 administration connie vasiliadis 68 and hart roper 70 and university advisory committee representative lynn a lis worth 68 ( ha w photo by booh0sian bids extended - in a time of decision robert handle care fully considers the fraternity bids he received saturday in the u.c this is no trivial decision as it will directly effect his next four years coeducation at lehigh the feasibility of coeducation at the university will be discussed here at 4:10 tomorrow afternoon in the osbourne room of the university center the panel discussion is being sponsored by the american asso ciation of university professors the panel will have five members dean claude dierolf of muhlenberg will describe how well the change has worked at muhlenberg prof robert williamson chairman of the department of social relations will discuss the i plications of coeducation to the social atmosphere prof eli schwartz of the department of finance will discuss the economic implications of a switch to coed ucation prof ray armstrong of the english department and james findley 67 chairman of arcadia's social codes committee wil also speak prof robert folk of the department of physics will moderate the discussion the aaup takes no stand on the issue of coeducation the organization is sponsoring the discussion only because the issue is an important one and should be considered folk said according to folk this dis cussion is only a preliminary one the purpose of the discussion is to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the transformation he said that from the discussion we can " decide if the idea is worth pursuing . . tradition does not necessarily dictate rushing is over 470 take bids amid cries and rumors of dirty rushing after endless nights of interviews fraternity diners and undone homework assignments rushing officially ended saturday afternoon with freshman accept ing a record total ot 470 bids to lehigh social fraternities the figure represents an increase of seven over the number of new pledges at the same time last year in addition 15 freshmen have accepted contracts extended by the gryphon society last week the freshmen were chosen from 219 original applicants phi kappa theta with 23 new members had the largest pledge class for the second year in a row pi kappa alpha was second with 20 followed by kappa alpha with 19 sigma nu with 19 alpha sigma phi with 19 chi phi with 18 alpha chi rho with 18 and sigma phi epsilon with 18 phi delta theta had this year's smallest class with eight men tau delta phi was second lowest with 10 pledges sixteen fraternities had between 15 and 20 pledges the average pledge class for the 31 fraternities was 15.1 men although this year's increase in the number of pledges was considerably less than last year's it was still the largest in lehigh's history lehigh british teams debate u.n success by john seitz a university debate team met the british team currently touring the united states in a debate last night ln grace hall about the effectiveness of the united nations representing lehigh the team of john musewicz 68 and roger straus 67 contended for the affirmative that the united nations has unsuccess fully dealt with the east-west crisis straus claimed that the united nations was bankrupt ln six areas -- morally organizationally financially politically ideologically and militarily he argued that it ls impossible to unite nations for peace so long as the soviet union is a member nation according to straus a basic weakness ls the fact that afro-asian nations control a majority of the votes in the general assembly illustrating this point he noted that a combination of nations which contribute seven per cent of the finances can control the assembly he also said that the united nations has usurped ujs sovereignty and that the united states must provide the leadership for freedom the visiting british team of david hunt of liverpool college and pamela ings of the university college of swansea countered the affirmative's six points with six points of their own hunt contended that the united nations has been successful tn keeping the peace in effecting disarmament in regulating the use of outer space in influencing nations through the secretary general in solving legal disputes and in estab lishing economic and social councils hunt added that wtth the united nations wars can no longer be caused by misunderstandings musewicz countered ln his constructive speech by stating that the united nations has caused rather than prevented wars pointing to korea hungary and kashmir answering hunt's plea to have faith ln the united nations and to give it time to be effective musewicz claimed that it will never mature he noted the inherent problem is that member nations act in their own interests lehigh debated the british debate team in grace hall last night on the topic that this house has no faith in the united nations representing lehigh were john musewicz 68 and roger straus 67 who contended for the affirmative see social page 8 concert tickets all town students who have signed up for rhc concert tickets must pick them up at the student activities desk by 1 p.m tomorrow
