lehigh university brown and white vol 78 - no 31 bethlehem pa - tuesday february 21 1967 866-0331 senior engineer given scholarship abroad james r oyler jr a senior in the college of engineering has been selected as the recipient of the lehigh scholarship for foreign study according to an announcement friday by presi dent w deming lewis oyler son of dr and mrs james oyler of biglerville will study economics and politics at a european university starting in october he plans to work toward his m.b.a degree upon his return from abroad the scholarship for foreign study with a stipends similar to a one-year rhodes or marshall scholarship was established to give an outstanding university scholar an opportunity to realize plans for study and travel abroad an electrical engineering major and member of the gryphon society whose long range goal is a career in business is the first engineering student named for the award established last year during his senior year oyler has been secretary of arcadia president of omic r o n delta kappa the national leadership honorary and received the bill hardy memorial prize for scholarship leadership citizen ship and interest in athletics and religion he ls a member of tau beta pi , national engineering honorary society the institute of electrical and electronics engineers and has been an active participant ln intramural athletics for three years earlier in his university career oyler was president of his living group a member of his class cabinet was elected to phi eta sigma freshman honorary of which he later became president and served on arcadia associates he has served as publicity director for the campus chest committee is a former vice president of cyanide junior honorary and has represented phi eta sigma and omicron delta kappa at national conventions last year's recipient william f mor a history major in the college of arts and science is now studying i nternati onal relations at the london school of economics student leaders say nsa furor too big by donald palmer local student leaders have deplored the over emphasis given to nsa as an international organization in recent press reports regarding the group's connection with the cia robert becker 68 who attended an nsa congress last summer at the university of illinois felt that the emphasis on nsa as an international student organization has been overly stressed in the current controversy he said that the sponsoring of american students for international conferences was only one of many functions of nsa one of the main functions of nsa is to sponsor summer conferences such as the one that he attended last summer becker said that he went as much for himself as for lehigh at the conference students from all over the country can exchange views on all subjects there were many seminars and actual policy meetings to decide nsa's views on political issues didn't take place until the end of the conference becker said becker said that nsa was more an organization for educational purposes and financial assistance than for political functions he said that nsa helps to finance student trips abroad and arranges group rates for such trips becker added that he had absolutely no knowledge of cia support of nsa harvey york president of arcadia xx also attended last summer's conference he said that one of the vital functions of the nsa is to provide information to the student governments of all member schools this information covers a wide range of student related problems academic freedom pass-fall student government and student stress york said that nsa did a very comprehensive study on student stress and student suicides they sent their findings to all schools with active nsa members york emphasized that information along these lines ls a valuable asset ninety-rive percent of all of nsa's funds come from sources other than the cia york stated he said that the national mental health institute and the office for economic opportunity were among the many contributors to nsa york was elected a regional treasurer to the nsa at last summer's conference aldo morin was another who attended last summer's congress he stated that the nsa ls a service organization not a political group borin a member of arcadia said that the nsa started out as a student service organization group only throußh considerable student support the group grew to national scale it was only then that nsa began to have any political overtones borin said he said that the nsa also has a service desk to help student organizations with any problems are you sure your kite's up here dr lewis - a workman maneuvers in a tree in front of the alumni memorial building this past week as the trees surrounding the presi dent's home receive their regular topping cia funds on campus by marty marasco two u groups linked twenty-five organizations have been receiving funds from the central intelligence agency through an organization known as the foundation for youth and students affairs according to the new york times included in the list were two organizations represented on this campus crossroads africa and the national newman club federation henderson b braddlck associate professor of inter national relations and a member of the crossroads africa selection committee said he had no knowledge of the connection between the crossroads program and the cia braddlck said that while he thought there were obvious dangers for such an organization getting involved after all we need this information a great deal of information " personally i think the extent of the furor is rather naive in the sense that all major countries frequently get information from private groups that go abroad he said that generally the american public is not aware of this edmond a watters assistant director of admission who is also a member of the crossroads africa selection committee said he was surprised when he read of the connection between the two groups i am writing to the national headquarters for crossroads africa to find what support was given and where it went before i say much said watters he noted that in all the publications on crossroads africa mentioned that there was no connection between the program and the government charles patterson assistant professor of government another member of the crossroads selection committee said he did not wish to comment until he had read about the connection between the two groups preston parr dean of student life also on the committee was not available for comment the rev francis sullivan chaplain to catholic students and advisor to the newman associa tion had no comment on the connection between the newman organization and the cia the expectant crowd waits to gat into grace hall for saturday afternoon's rhc concert featuring eric burdon and the animals along with the team of simon and garfunkel tha animals despite top billing proved something of a disappointment representatives of arcadia the residence halls council and the inter fraternity council will hofcl an open forum to discuss the new social code the forum will follow the regularly scheduled arcadia meetinc tomorrow night
