lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa - friday march 10 1967 866-0331 vol 78 - no 36 associates disbanded by marty marasco after waiting period arcadia associates was disbanded at the wednesday nlgtt arcadia meeting with only one dissenting vote the motion which was presented to the arcadians feb 14 was brought up for a vote after the required two-week waiting period for by-law changes rich ralnin 69 questioned the move pointing out that most of the people ln the organization were very enthusiastic and willing to work al borln 69 arcadia representative to the associates said the organization on the whole was highly ineffectual rich slowes 69 agreed with borln saying " arcadia associates was pretty much a waste of time the organization was formed to do much of the busy work that the arcadians didn't hav tlme to do people get on associates and want to make it an organization it isn't jim tanenbaum 70 expressed the hope that eventually a stronger system might evolve but until then the organization should be disbanded in other action arcadia defeated a proposed revision ln the setup of the freshman life committee the proposal would have outlined more specifically the duties of the committee speaking in favor of the proposal ted breton 68 saw it as something new for arcadia we are for the first time attempting to structure the committees on arcadia he said breton added that he didn't think there was anything in the proposal which restricted the committee other arcadians including bob westerman 68 chairman of the committee disagreed saying that the motion would place undue restraints on the committee in other business arcadia voted to raise the price of tickets for the ifc concert from the 2.75 price suggested by the finance and calander committee to 3 the price that the interfraternity council asked there was considerable discussion on the change in price the problem centered on the fact that ifc had failed to include 500 of the concert budget from the budget submitted to the fcc later ln the meeting martv cohen 68 arcadia president and borin vice-president of arcadia both said they were happy to see that the arcadians voted as arcadians and not as members ol ifc or rhc jim huston 68 was appointed to the finance and calander committee after a screening of the applicants by arcadia in the committee of the whole arcadia also voted to backstop up to 350 a performance of the marshal-brown jazz quartet on april 7 the concert will be cosponsored by the jazz moderns and the arcadia lecture committee rhc rebate up to vote officers are nominated by george carvill nominations were received for residence halls council officers at tuesday night's meeting council also referred the question of rebates to a referen dum and approved proposed rhc constitutional ammendments nominees for the office of rhc president were martin l klein 69 vice-president of mccuntlc marshall house and a member of m&m a-2 robert j weintraub 68 president of the lower east side thomas w desks 67 president of mam b-2 and james w winchester 68 rhc representative to arcadia of emory the nominees for the office of vice-president are ray l mendelsohn 69 of thornburg thomas m gllllgan 68 former president of m&m and daniel e sassi 69 of mcconn the remaining three offices received oniy one nomination apiece secretary — ray l mendelsohn treasurer -- roger n rosenberger 69 of mam b-2 and for social chairman incumbent george curme 69 from congdon a motion to accept the petition circulated last week asking rhc to call a referendum on council's action to rebate members up to 7 on their rhc concert tickets was defeated treasurer bruce mcdonnell 67 reported that on the basis of his investigation into the validity of the petitions he recommended that they not be accepted because although rhc by-laws do not specify how petitions are to be drawn up the petitions do not meet the requirements for petitions as set up t>v the arcadia by-laws however council did approve a motion to hold a referendum on the rebates constitutional ammendments effectively changing the name of rhc officer now called the secretary to " recording secretary and to add a new position known aa corres ponding secretary whose duties will be to handle the correspondence between and off campus organizations henry barter rhc president said that the amendments were necessary as thare is a grsst desl of correspondence ot this type which is s burden to the recording secretary as ha must handle campus correspondence and minutes of rhc meetings the ammendments must now be approved by the residence halls students the council voted to give 300 to each section of m&m a total of 1,800 for capital improve ments on their lounges all plans for improvements must he approved by both the rhc facilities committee and buildings and grounds a motion to financially backstop the fourth annual north atlantic association of college and university residence halls conference to he held at lehigh in september was passed after being ammended lo limit the backstop to 250 baw photo by evans a lehigh engineer supporting a worthy causa this was tha scene wednesday afternoon at the comer of 4th and hew streets his purpose is obvious his goal high his motive - love registrar not pleased with draft proposals by johnseitz amid recent controversy concerning proposed changes in draft procedures registrar james wagner said that he doesn't like anv of the proposals and is not entirely satisfied with the present system concerning a lottery system wagner said that it would be " just as unfair as the present system and that it would do nothing to insure uniformity wagner's main criticism of the present system is the non uniformity of local draft boards according to him state directors are free to interpret selective service laws to fit their own needs and that in part the chances of being drafud depend upon the local board in wagner's opinlona rontlnua rhc votes to donate 1000 to theater fund the residence halls council voted at its tuesday night meeting to donate 1,000 to the arcadia development committee to support the construction of a theater facility at lehigh the council's action came after glenn airgood representing the development committee asked rhc to support the theater drive with a token donation james winchester rhc arcadia repre sentative proposed a motion calling for council to support the committee with a 1,000 contribution airgood told rhc members that while the contribution would represent only a small part of the total amount needed for con struction of a theater it would serve to emphasize support of students and campus organizations for a theater facility a minor controversy arose over whether rhc should contribute a lump sum of 1,000 or donate the difference between the profit made on the simon and garfunkle concert and the loss incurred on the folk festival bruce mcdonnell rhc treasurer pointed out that there should be no connection between profits and losses of rhc functions and the money donated to the theater the motion was passed by a 19-1 roll call vote b*w phoio by yewdall rebels without a cause armed with leaflets and atrocity photos sos members prepared to picket the dow chemical company thursday morning for its manufacture of napalm after setting up their display it was discovered that the company will not be on campus until monday see registrar page 8
