lehigh university brown and white mwmmmmmmmm vol 78 no 39 bethlehem pa - tuesday april 4 1967 866-0331 four arcadians seated illegally by marty marasco four of the members of arcadia xxi are seated illegally this was realized last week at a meeting among arcadia president marty cohen rhc president jim winchester and university parliamentarian prof h barrett davis the four members of arcadia affected are don kemp 69 ifc representative bob kaufman 68 rhc representative lynn alsworth the class of 68 representative and rick slowes the class of 69 representative these students according to cohen cannot presently be considered members of arcadia however cohen plans to take action to have them reseated retroactive to february before the arcadia meeting tomorrow night the problem stems from the arcadia referendum in december at that time an amendment to the consti tution to expand arcadia from 16 to 20 members was presented to the student body for approval the amendment passed and the new representatives from the interfraternity council the residence halls council the class of 68 and the class of 69 were appointed however the amendment as presented in the referendum only changed one part of the constitution the preamble to the section on members representing student groups was not changed this according to davis creates two problems first the section should call for nine and not five members representing student groups the second problem is that the preamble states that these members shall be elected as the groups themselves decide prior to the date when petitions for members at large are circulated since the four new members were appointed after this time they are seated illegally on arcadia cohen pointed out that although it was obviously the intention of the amendment that the new members of arcadia were to be appointed this semester he has no other choice but to accept the davis interpetatlon the effect of this is to reduce arcadia back to a 16 member body and to invalidate all action taken by arcadia xxi since it convened in february davis said the situation could he rectified temporarily by the use of a petition as called for in the arcadia constitution the petition signed by rive percent of the student body would ask arcadia to seat the four members retroactive to february until such time as the constitution can he corrected by the amendment procedures this according to davis would get arcadia out of the constitutional predicament cohen is presently taking steps to have such a petition circulated and hopes to have the required number of signatures for tomorrow night's arcadia meeting at that time he will ask the 10 legally seated members of arcadia to approve the petition so that the four additional members may be again seated the flaw in the amendment was discovered by winchester while he was attempting to show that rhc must hold a re-election for the arcadia seat that has been held by kaufman greek week festivities termed great success spring fever and summer temperatures combined over the weekend to climax the most successful greek week in lehlgh history outgoing inter - fraternity council president ralph levy termed the entire affair a tremendous success with much active participation and interest former ifc secretary pete ciampa stated that this year's activities were the start of a new tradition for an expanded greek week the week was highlighted by the presentation of the first annual greek week supremacy trophy to theta xi for the most points earned through participation in the week's activities the fraternity placed first in the bed design contest and in the ifc sponsored civic program for the program the house collected over 134 for the easter seals campaign according to greek week chairman bob smith collections for the entire program totaled 748.06 smith said the response to the clvir program and to the week's activities was excellent friday saw the first " torches and toga marathon race through sayre park each partici pating house entered a six-man relay team which carried torches designed by the house general entertainment for the weekend included the mustart and cheese production of stalag 17 , the varsity intrasquad football game the saturday night concert featuring george carlin and smokey rohlnson and the miracles and individual house parties the ifc beauty queen maddy haldeman a junior at wells college reigned over the festivities b&w photo by butt ifc weekend was highlighted by the annual bed race through sayre park following a few pre-race difficulties of helmeting and strapping the drivers to their beds theta xi came away victorious and went on to win the first annual greek week supremacy trophy more pictures on page 6 frosh begin ratification by dee mcallister of class constitution in a productive meeting thurs day night the class of 7o cabinet approved half their constitution and passed two motions james tanehbaum represen tative to arcaula and chairman of the constitution committee introduced only the first half of the proposed constitution saying that in this way the cabinet could examine the constitution more carefully the cabinet created a committee to evaluate cabinet committees the issues they faced and the ways in which they attempted to meet them also passed was a motion asking the freshman life committee to establish a lecture series for freshman arts and business stu dents si mi liar to the uniform freshman year forum for beginning engineers the cabinet approved the first half of the constitution with relatively little debate or change the most controversial issue was the absence of the provision for the vice president's member ship in all committees those arguing against the elimination of the provision said that the vice president's presence on committees gives needed coordination between the committees and the executive committee and also gives him an important function to perform lee stewart president of the class claimed that the elimina tion of this provision would lead to greater freedom for the vice president in that he would not be unknown lasher cuts freshman with whip campus police are investigating a whipping case which occurred in sayre park around 10:15 p.m saturday and sent roger tresolinl 70 to the university health center with a gash across the right side of his face requiring 15 stitches to close tresollni the son of dr rocco j tresolinl chairman of the department of government was a passenger in a triumph convertible driven by clifton hunt 70 as the car was heading wast on sayre park road tresollni was lashed by an unknown assailant standing on top of the fire house near beta theta pi fraternity police are investigating reports that the whip was wielded by a june 66 graduate now serving in the armed forces according to campus police tresollni was one of four occupants in the car he was reportedly sitting up in back when the incident occurred and was immediately taken to the university health center where he was treated and released bethlehem police have not been called into the case as yet since the incident occurred on private property the robert shaw chorale and orchestra internationally heralded music group now in its 19th season will appear here at 8:15 p.m thursday in grace hall the program will be the sixth in the university's 1966-67 committee on the performing arts series tickets for the performance will be on salt at the office of public information and at the moravian book store in bethlehem see frosh page 7
