help subsidize the cost of the new hall of liberal arts w ross yates dean of the college of arts and science said that the effective decision on the grant has been made by the state commission on academic facilities and there is a " 99 per cent probability that we will receive the funds the 610,000 for the arts com plex is very close to the maximum amount allowed for such a grant under the u.s higher education act of 1966 yates said the amount asked for by lehigh was based on a 1.9 million cost for the project which according to yates includes the cost of parking facil ities lehigh asked for the maximum possible funds available under the law the fund raising drive for the complex is now over 1 million according to yates and the target date for groundbreaking is december of this year under the same act the uni versity received over 500,000 last year for the new science and engineering library along with the latest recommendation the university has been recom mended for a supplementary grant of approximately 18,000 for the library commenting on lehlgh's finan cial policy yates said that the university is interested m and will seek all public and private aid that will not interfere with its integrity as far as state aid is concerned yates said that no regular legislative appropria tions are available to lehigh because it is private he added that if lehigh was considered for such aid other schools throughout the state would protest another matter of interest concerning university finances involves the ford foundation several years ago controversy between lehigh and this founda tion arose but since that time the foundation has come under new management said yates and lehigh is now considering a new approach to the group rumors concerning the high priority of an athletic stadium here and its adverse affect upon academic grants were labeled completely false by yates student life proposes social code revisions by dee mcallister proposals formulated by the student life committee for revision of the social codes dealing with women m dormitory and fraternity rooms were discussed friday at a joint meeting of that committee and the social codes committee the student life committee offered four different proposals of social code revision concerning women m rooms for consideration by the social codes group these alternative revisions had been formulated by the life committee at previous meetings on the subject r wayne kraft professor of metallurgy and student life com mitteeman listed the alternatives the first possible revision would be a closed-door policy with no statement of standards the second possible revision would be a closed-door policy with a statement of standards also there could be an open-door policy with no statement of standards or an open-door policy with a statement of standards bill taylor vice president of the class of 70 and member of social codes said that kraft had maintained that student life could not ser iously consider the first proposal for recommendation to the faculty in addition the second alternative was difficult to consider because of the difficulty of creating a workable and enforcable statement of standards which kraft had said student life had unsuccessfully tried to do committee considered bookstore remedies by brian kanes at the beginning of this academic year following numerous complaints by students and faculty members an investi gation was begun on the deficiencies of and possible remedies for the unlver s i t y supply bureau a subcommittee of the university center advisory committee headed by dr charles e patterson assistant professor of government first met m october and then several times m november to discuss evaluating the bookstore and possible improvements foi it dr patterson said they considered many faults and solu tions although nothing was done he did say that elmer w click university treasurer and the administrator in charge of the bookstore was present at the december meeting with stanley f heffner bookstore manager " mr click is very willing to help and is now very aware of the situation in the bookstore patterson said harvey york then president of arcadia and a member of the subcommittee said the best solu tion they came up with one accepted by all members wa to move the textbooks out of the supply bureau completely the plan he said was to sell them in another room m the u.c possibly the osbourne room for the first few weeks and then move them to the university's warehouse glick told the group a special room could be built in the warehouse to lock up the books york explained that if a student wanted one of the texts later m the year he could order it and one day per week would be set aside for anemployeeto pick up the requested books m the warehouse all the built-in shelves m the bookstore would then be filled with the paper back books that according to patterson are so necessary for the development of a good undergraduate as well as an expanded graduate school the only textbooks that would remain are the miscellaneous science and engineering texts that occupy the top shelf around the south and west ends of the supply bureau to my knowledge nothing is being done they have • committee formed but ulsdntaß not hi ng . i can see no reason why ," york said patterson explained that this solution was seen by the committee as something that could be done immediately a short-range solution he said preston parr dean of student life and heffner had been charged with exploring the committee which re views university needs the committee is also dis cussing solutions to the crowded snackbar patterson noted " i think something m the very near future must be done the present member of the stanford faculty since 10g1 has written six novels and four critical stu dies he was the recipient of a rockefeller founda tion post-service fellowship m 1945 and m 1050 went to france on a fulbright research fellow ship th phi beta kappa visiting scholar program begun in 1956 gives undergraduates an opportun ity to meet and talk with outstanding scholars who are also noted teachers
