lehigh university brown and white vol 78 - no 46 bethlehem pa friday april 28,1967 6660331 -■'.:;..■.::•: x-:*x houseparty queen to be chosen beret janette diane connie u.s policy commended by doug welldon in spaak press conference the conditions that the united states demand to end the vietnam war are " wise and reasonable according to paul henri spaak the blausteln lecturer's remarks came at a tuesday press conference attended by local newsmen and film crews from philadelphia the conference centered around the war in vietnam and the north atlantic treaty organ ization's nato role in postwar europe spaak said that it was difficult to understand why north vietnam does not accept the american conditions to end the war he added that he could see no difference between the current u.s policy in asia and the u.s european policy followed in europe during the late 40s and early 50s to thwart european communist expansion he added that such a policy was " logical even though it was more difficult to follow in southeast asia than in europe he pointed out that u.s aid to europe immediately after world s war b was more successful because that area was basically more politically stable according to spaak u.s withdrawal from vietnam would in effect be a complete policy change permitting that country and perhaps all of asia to become communist he said it would thus be " impossible for the united states to have committments in europe and not asia when asked if the european nations felt neglected now that the u s attention is concentrated in vietnam spaak responded in the negative however he described vice president humphrey's recent trip to europe as " a good thing the visiting lecturer added that he felt the basic purpose of humphrey's mission wastoexplalnu.s policy in asia and not to reassure european countries of continued u s interest in them he blamed the lack of information which necessitated the vice president's trip with the difficulty europeans have in understanding the u.s position in vietnam this difficulty he said would make it quite impossible for any european nation to send troops or equipment to southeast asia however spaak said that open red chinese involvement in the war would cause a great change in europe's policy on the subject of nato and a united europe spaak said that the world should know if a united europe can become a reality within two or three lovin spoonful to be featured tonight the junior class will present the 1967 spring house party concert featuring the lovin spoonful and " ivy league comedian jerry shane in grace hall the lovin spoonful's style lies in their varied background and their ability to blend together a unified medium of folk rock while dressed as comic book characters success story their success results from top-sellinp singles " do you be lieve in magic " daydream summer in th city and " younger girl john sebastian who plays gui tar harmonica and autoharp was born in greenwich village new vorx city he has worked as a guitar maker's apprentice studio harmonica player jug band musician and sail maker in marble head mass traveled extensively in new york john met zal yanovsky lead guitarist from toronto canada zal has travel ed extensively studying the folk music of the locale steve boone born in north carolina claims to be a des cended of that famous woods man but he also maintains that his family once owned the times tower now the allied chemical building in manhattan and one fifth of delaware steve plays electric bass toured clubs joe butler from great neck n y has toured many of the posh clubs of long island with his drums he met steve at one of these clubs and moved to new york while playing with a band in the village he and steve met john and zal and thus the em ergence of the lovin spoonful the other half of the show will feature comedian jerry shane shane a 6'l sandy-haired critic of the social mores and faults of the great society coffies to lehigh with commendable refer ences he has played numerous clubs all across the land including the playboy club in boston where variety magazine acclaimed him as a comedian who carries lis teners along with him " he scores in series of scenes of highly humorous material aimed with rifle-like precision he has a keen eye for observa tion and hits home with talky one - liners the magazine claimed jerry shane b&w photo by butt dr paul henri spaak spoke to reporters at a press conference tuesday morning in the os bourne room of the university center he was asked questions by members of the press from television radio newspapers and magazines lectures extended jacob blausteln sponsor \ of the blausteln lecture series announced at the f tuesday night lecture that he is donating 25,000 to : continue the series for an : additional five years convinced that the lee tures have been successful : thus far he said that future lectures will continue to j bring lehigh valley cltt zens closer to the stream of world events see fate page 6
