lehigh university brown and white mbl 78 - no 49 8660331 friday may 12 1967 arcadia award given to caruso by marty marasco arcadia at us meeting wednes day night presented mike caruso 67 with an award thanking mm for ms outstanding achievements ln wrestling and the pride lt brought to the student body along with the prestige it brought to lemgh in presenting the award marty cohen president of arcadia said that wmle many awards and tri butes have been given to caruso arcadia speaking for the student body wanted to express special thanks to mm the award read " arcadia the student council commends michael caruso for winning three eiwa and ncaa wrestling ciiamp ons hips arcadia also moved to table their rusmng proposal which had been brought to the floor after being tabled last week cohen moved to table saying that he did not tmnk the arcadians had given the proposal sufficient thought and they should tmnk about lt further before bringing lt to a vote ted breton 68 chairman of the committee who drew up the proposal said that since tms ls the last meeting of the year it is very likely the measure will never be voted on he added that lt would be sent to the student life committee as an idea not necessarily one that had arcadia's approval arcadia voted to lend its support to the town student's effort to acquire a permanent town student center and to send a letter to each member of the board of trustees advocating this position don kemp chairman of the open section proposal not approved by dean by glenn airgood the proposed modification of the open section policy wmch was passed by the residence halls council mst week has been returned to rhc for reconsideration by dean of residence clarence b campbell the refusal of the dean of residence's office to approve the rhc passed measure means there will be little hope of instituting any open section changes this semester according to mcclintic marshall president jack bannon the action will " kill all chances of approval this year refusal to recognize the rhc proposal came from campbell's office wednesday morning in a letter to bannon and rhc prealdent jemea win cheater stating the reasons for the refusal the letter pointed out be flaw m h uw propoaal which deserve the particular attention of the residence halls council according to campbell the first criticism campbell leveled at the pro posal was ln regard to " basic questions that need to ih raised as statements of general concern the letter asks for a clarification of the status of exist ing open section regulations not stated m the pro iposal a clarification of what ts meant by unfair with regard to the proposal that open section privileges be extended tothe cen tennial complex a suggestion that the freshman life commit tee the freshman claaa cabinet and tha gryphon society be con sulted regarding the open section proposal for freahman residence halls and a statement that each living group has a right not men tioned ln the rhc proposal to state any individual modifica tions considerations or reserva tions they might have with regard to their individual section policy in the rhc passed measure the propoaal stated " members of the upperclass residence halls . . . have proven that they are mature individuals who can handle responsibility and exer cise good judgment . . . ." in ms letter campbell pointa out that " there are several recent situations that seem to suggest that tms philosophy is not prac ticed he notes the sloppy housekeeping m the mcclintic marshall party room aa noted in the fire mars hell's report a complaint from the dining service that dishes and utensils sent out to various groups have not been returned a harbeque grill was lit m the pit tiehind m-m for cooking nrnn.ac uml r.nnrl nt rnnlln ,--.■a_7ww -..!-. • -„_— 0 jr >.. ......... uing damage to residence halls property baw photo by doster nike caruso three-tine ncaa wrestling champion ac cepts a formal commendation for his three national and eastern mat championships the commendation was presented by ar cadia on behalf of the entire student body carnegie president to speak at graduation dr w deming lewis announced that dr h guyford st ever president of carnegie institute of technology will deliver the commencement address m grace llallon june 12 dr horton davies who is henry w putnam professor of religion at princeton university will give the baccalaureate ser mon on june 11 according to lewis announcment dr stever came to carnegie institute m 1965 as us fifth prest - dent immediately prior he served as head of the iepartments of mechanical engineering and naval architecture and marine engineering at the massachusetts institute of technology he is currently a member of the defense science board and the advisory panel of the u s house of representatives com mittee on science and astronautics since 1961 he has been chair man of the scientific advisory board to the c hie of staff usa f and recently stever was named by president johnson as a mem ber of a special committee to study the federal patent system he has served as chairman of the special committee on space technology and the research advisory committee stever was chosen as pittsburgh's 196g " man of the year by the pitts burgh junior chamber of commerce dr davies distinguished authority on the history of chris tianity was former head of the department of church history at mansfield college oxford university he has devoted mmself pri marily to the teacmng ministry his experience includes service m the ecumenical movement and m south africa where he organised the first department of religion m an english-speaking university he serves as a consultant to the missionary research committee of the world council of churches degrees will he conferred upon approximately r>7f undergradu ates and 240 graduate students by president lewis rush changes opposed by 808 benner ifc straw vote indicates the interfraternity council with the exception of theta cm ls not willing to have any of the existing rusmng rules changed according to a straw vote taken at tuesday's meeting the vote came as a result of lengthy discussion on a tentative rusmng proposal the proposal similar to the one formed by the arcadia rusmng committee permits contacting on the lower mll at all times provides for two extra party nights at the fraternity houses other than houseparty and gives the individual house the opportunity to hold an informal open house the proposal referred to both the residence halls council and ifc and was a direct result of talks between james winchester 68 rhc president and robert gould 68 ifc president the two bad been working for a number of weeks to formulate rusmng regulations favorable to both rhc and ifc when discussion of new business began gould presented the proposal to ifc and asked for debate followed by a straw vote gould called for a straw vote of the willingness of ifc to abolish the no contacting rule on the lower campus only theta cm was m favor of the proposal rather than continue any discussion gould called for a second vote of the willingness of ifc to change any rusmng rules again only theta cm voted to change the rules gould promised ifc that he would baak ita position and that he would work with the ifc rusmng committee to formally present the reasons for ifc's unwillingness to change rushing rules in other action ifc defeated an amendment to the constitution that would have delineated punish ment for failure to meet the ifc scholarship standards the proposal had tt been passed would have taken jurisdiction from the scholarship committee and placed lt m the hands of the council william hunter 68 ifc secretary said that each case should be reviewed separately to provide for justice he said tms can best be done by a scholarship committee and the ifc executive committee fully backs the work thus far of our scholarship committee dr h guyford stever see hp page 6
