lehigh university brown and white vol 78 - no 50 bethlehem pa - tuesc ay may 16 1967 866-0331 caruso steckbeck are honored by doug wecldon john sf steckbeck assistant director of physical education and michael j caruso jr re ceived top honors at the university's annual flagpole day exercises yesterday steckbeck was given a standing ovation when william a reamy 67 editor ot the epitome announced that the 196 yearbook had been dedicated to him moved by the presentation steckbeck said you really know how to break a guy up caruso le high's only three time national intercollegiate wrestling champion became the first student athlete to receive four trophies at flagpole cere monies since the program was inaugurated in 1914 university president dr w deming lewis presented the bosey relter leadership cup to caruso the award is presented annually to the outstanding leader in the senior class caruso also received the eastern college athletic con ference award for scholarship and athletic prowress and the lehigh home club and george j feuerbach trophies as the best wrestler on the varsity squad pi lambda phi fraternity was awarded the president's trophy for scoring the highest number of points in intramural sports competition dravo a 2 took intramural sports honors in the freshman division due to a computation error in the intra murals department however the award was mistakenly presented to drinker four at the ceremonies presentation of the first annual lehigh lafayette trophy also highlighted the ceremonies the award based on all sports supremacy from september through may was won by lehigh top freshman athlete corey wolford received the j daniel nolan trophy wolford was an outstanding tackle on last season's freshman football team the student awards for out standing teaching were awarded to george p conrad n professor of metallurgy joseph a dow ling associate professor of history and brian g brockway assis tant professor of business law the alpha phi omega award given for outstanding service to the university went to brockway james r oyler 67 and donald l booth 67 oyler also received the uni versity service award the arcadia award went to harvey l york 67 the phi etasigmaaward,pre sented to the freshman living group which attained the highest academic average was given to drinker 28 the section's average was 2.716 dale e newbury 69 was presented the tau beta pi award for engineering scholarship newbury has maintained a 4.00 grade average the fraternity alumni advisory council award pre sented to the student who b*w photo by ppttiorfw it was our jammed packard lab auditorium yesterday eight incumbents win in three-class voting by john seitz eight incumbents including all four officers of the class of 68 were victorious in last week's elections four incumbents including class of 69 president casey cogut failed to be re elected in the class of 68 elections all four incumbents ran without opposition aubrey gladstone was re-elected president he had been opposed by andy seiner a flctlclous opponent created by students who felt class govern ments have become functionless robert wester man will con tinue as vice-president a position he has held most of the year while thomas hodson was re-elected secretary and robert bradley will again serve as treasurer james huston 69 pulled a major upset in defeating incumbent casey cogut for 69 president cogut had held the position for two years richard globus a third candidate for president who wanted to make the school " more velvet and less vinyl and place lights around campus to attract females polled according toconstantine vasllia dis 68 head of the arcadia elections committee a surprising number of votes and was very much in the running in the race for 69 vice president incumbent thomas hunt did not seek re-election steve burton was elected to the position incumbent richard rainin treasurer and george mcconnel secretary were re elected mcconnel was unopposed class of 70 president lee stewart won re-election over two other presidential hopefuls incumbent vice-president william taylor edged out a narrow victory over william kuhn in a hotly contested five way race anthony mitchell was defeated by albert eisley in his bid to remain secretary of the class of 70 likewise stephen nelson knocked off incumbent bruce berzin in the race for treasurer vasiliadis said that the turnout for the election was real good one hundred and fifteen juniors voted vasiliadis noted that this figure was good considering that the election for the 68 officers was merely a rubber stamp thing since they were all unopposed he added that 540 sophomores cast ballots while almost 600 freshmen voted these figures were an increase over last year's class election when 209 sophomores and 570 freshmen voted caruso accepts four trophies by marty marasco mike caruso lehigh's only three time intercollegiate wrestling champion ever yester day set another donald palmer robert walters lehigh 60 pulitzer prize no minee and national desk reporter for the washing ton evening star was the principal panelist at last night's arcadia sponsored discussion on " the student and the cia walters relied on the ex tensive knowledge he gained in his follow-up inves tigation of the nsa-cia crisis to provide much insight into the devious workings of the cia prof joseph mcfadden chairman of the division of journalism who acted as moderator set the tone of the evening's discussion with his challenge to the four-man panel of what on earth is wrong with the cia using whatever method it can to maintain its top-dog position " we fought the communists on the same dirty grounds that they fought us .... we were promot ing democracy through undemocratic means re
