bethlehem pa friday september 9 1983 the taylor hall project not only include a face-lift for the campus land mark but some surgery as well in addition to two inches of added outside insulation extensive work on the inside is also being done mixed housing set for taylor graduates find employment in tight job market discussing ideas and becoming more involved in issues facing their commun ity and country quay noted that the selection of the correct faculty member is crucial to the program the actual renovation of the dormitory is definitely on schedule according to paul miller director of physical plant he said that the inside of the building should be completed by april 1984 and that landscaping and furnishing will con tinue into the summer the building will be divided into three sections divided by fire towers 100 per cent fireproof stairwells with steel doors which provide a safe means of escape in case of fire miller said wall-to-wall carpeting air-conditioning all new lighting plumbing bathroom facilities windows and frames will be some of the improvements made to the dormitory everything will be new mimer said see taylor page 6 by teresa kilcullen the taylor hall renovation program to be completed by fall 1984 calls for the building to become a residential col lege housing both students tutors and faculty said dean of students william quay the facility is expected to house 160 male and female students a slight decrease in capacity and will contain a large two-bedroom apartment for a live in faculty member and his or her family quay said it will not be a traditional dormitory nor an interest group dormi tory " he stated we are hoping to attract juniors and seniors who have experienced fraternity sorority or resi dence hall life who would like to expe rience a different type of living option the group chosen to live there will be carefully selected quay said adding that the individuals should be broadly based intellectually and interested in the interviewer . they all add up,"see loff said adding that because of the expense companies are tightening up and eliminating interviews at unpro ductive schools he listed four reasons why organiza tions do not view the universityasunpro ductive in terms of potential job candidates the big reason is that lehigh graduates have an excellent rep utation in the work world students here also prepare thoroughly for job inter views the interviewer knows he or she will not be wasting time and both the faculty and this office are known to be cooperative and responsive to organiza tions needs because of these factors which make for a good business arrangement according to seeloff company interest in interviewing at the university tends to see interviews page 6 by rhonda stoner describing the job market for last year's graduates as tight with a capi tal tight eugene seeloff director of career planning and placement office reported that as of june 36 percent of the 987 graduating seniors were employed or in the military service another 19 percent were planning to attend graduate school an updated august report shows that another 37 percent have found jobs enrolled in graduate school or made other plans twenty-seven percent are still seeking employment according to the report graduating seniors from the college of business and economics had the poorest showing with 32 percent still seeking employment . graduates of the college of engineering and physical sciences had a 25 percent unemployment rate college of arts and science graduates fared the best with 23 percent still unemployed the low arts college unemployment figure is due in part to the large number 41 percent of arts college graduates who continued on to graduate or profes sional schools yet seeloff emphasizes that he does not subscribe to the viewpoint that lib eral arts graduates continue on to higher education because they see it as their only alternative to joblessness i'm aware of the belief that arts majors opt for graduate school simply because no jobs exist for them but i sus pect that most go on to graduate school because it's the next logical step he commented all three colleges registered slight gains in starting salaries engineers topped the list with a median starting salary of 2 140 per month an increase of two percent over last year the employed business graduates received starting salaries of 1,583 per month up three percent over last year starting salaries for the employed arts graduates showed the largest gains up eight per cent to 1,617 per month the number of organizations inter viewing on campus totaled 295 an 18 per cent decrease from last year seeloff noted that decreases in the number of organizations interviewing on campus is a problem most colleges share due to the ailing economy he pointed out the university was not as adversely affected as some schools interviews are down as much as 50 percent at some really big name schools he said the reason for this involves the expense to an organization for college recruiting flight costs accommodations and lost work time for university day brings together lehigh community all university day held sept 1 in sayre park and sponsored by the student activities council sac the inter fratemity council ifc , and the resi dence halls council rhc went well according to lauren aaron 84 sac vice-president and event coordinator the purpose of all university day is to bring the entire university together aaron said it is a gathering together of the university community the stu dents the faculty and the staff it is a celebration of the university she con tinued overall i was pleased with the turnout events featured included the rock band selector and the jammers a pro fessional frisbee team two members of the team performed to their own recorded music while the band played afterward the jammers performed conducted a clinic and gave away t shirts and frisbees refreshments con sisted of a barbecue and beer b&w photo ty rob sternlieb a member of the jammer professional frlsbee team show off some of his moves to a group of intrigued students at all-unlverslty day in sayre park field lehigh university
