vol 93 — no 35 bethlehem pa tuesday february 23 1982 of total upperclass male housing spaces and 10 percent of total upperclass female housing spaces will be available to pledges no more than 10 percent greek members will live in a section and no chapter may have more than two members in v section so greek annexes will not develop in the residence halls according to the plan we want a policy on hand in case we ever come upon a situation like delta gamma again salsburg said explain ing that there is a reluctance on the part of parents to allow their daughters to go into a sorority whose housing is uncer tain a goal of the dean of students oil ice is to encourage sororities to build buy or rent their own houses he said in addition there would be an incen tive tor fraternity houses to take more members in to ensure a full house salsburg said noting that a house could overpledge by one or two people know ing that people who couldn't live in the house would be allowed to live in the resi dence halls soare said if vacancies appeared in greek houses those pledges living in dor mitories would be asked to move into their houses thereby allowing students on the waiting list to enter the residence hall pledges may enter lottery to maximize housing usage by janis barney fraternity and sorority pledges would be allowed to participate in the residence halls room assignment system accord ing to a plan developed by the dean of students and residence operations staffs that will be put before the forum the past policy which prevented pledges from living in residence halls has caused problems fraternities and sororities had selected members based on bed space only and if pledges dropped out beds would remain empty according to the plan worked out by larry philippi and warren soare of the dean of students office and kurt sals burg assistant director of residence operations ultimately the plan says this will result in greater numbers of students moving to the greek houses and a greater number of students can then be offered housing from the waiting list according to soare the plan would benefit sororities especially because they would be able to take larger pledge classes pledges would be processed alter the regular lottery has been completed so this plan would neither affect the hous ing priority for freshmen nor the lottery for upperclassmen the plan says no more than 10 percent on tv tonight at 9:30 on abc ted knight will wear a lehigh sweat shirt on his series too close for comfort the show has an estimated weekly audience of 30,000,000 the shirt was s«>m u abc b sam connor director of public information al the university . spring festival needs more funds to be successful osal of 7,050 to william quay dean of students and is awaiting his approval they are also attempting to tap a 9,000 stabler fund according to roger wat kins assistant dean of students the fund is specifically designated for any event held in stabler arena but so far only one student activities council sponsored event is planned there scheibener said she added if we don't get the money by today we will have to start cutting back on the program and the students won't get the extra va by diana wall the spring festivals small budget means more student involvement is needed to make the program a success according to lorraine scheibener activ ities coordinator and co-chairperson for the steering committee on spring festival we have 4,000 specifically set aside for spring festival . . . 4,000 covers nothing said beth fraikhorn 82 co chairperson of the committee the committee has sent a budget prop speaker choice still in progress gance they want the committee encouraged student participation and explained that stti dents will keep any profits from their concessions events planned thus far for the week long program include an outdoor movie a craft show roller-skating in stabler arena a class day with events sponsored by each class musical chairs for 400 peo ple a clown show and an interfraternitj council sponsored event from 4-fi p.m each day there is still no word on who will be the commencement speaker in june according to pete fioretti k senior chiss president we the commencement speaker committee had meetings thursday night and friday afternoon things are happening but we're still having prob lems with some of our choices fioretti said because ot certain circumstances the list of preferred speakers had to be changed on several occasions he explained we are still actively searching for a commencement speaker he said although we haven't obtained one yet ." university president i deming lewis is presently in the process of con tacting our choices fioretti explained adding that although the list of choices is changing
