lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa friday april 6 1984 vol 95 — no 45 215 861-4184 plan for future social policy given approval by committee by janis barney and joan lebersfeld a statement of responsibility designed to set the process for a future university social policy was unanim ously approved by the campus life com mittee of forum xiv at their meeting wednesday the statement of social standards which will hopefully lead to the replace ment of the social regulations imposed m 1981 is based on the belief that the social policy would be most effective if it were established and maintained by those who are to abide by it marshall wenrich 85 interfraternity council ifc president said the statement originally entitled social standards of the lehigh com munity affirms that behavior which violates the rights of others will not be tolerated furthermore racial reli gious and sexual abuse of any kind will not be tolerated and will call for the stric test of penalties we further recognize the statement reads that within each living unit . . . each member is charged with a responsibility for the behavior of every member by abiding by the principles of collective responsibility we . are therefore committed to the stopping of unacceptable behavior before it occurs or while it is m progress to the best.of our ability according to wenrich regulations will be devised to approach specific prob lems these regulations he said will be based upon the ideals set forth m the statement of responsibility the statement was sent out to all living groups m march for approval of the 70 responses returned five residence halls groups couldn't believe this would work and disaffirmed for that reason wenrich said the fraternities have no problem wenrich explained they want more control over social affairs as a house however some students m residence halls don't want responsibility for people they don't know or worse yet were stuck with and don't like bonnie solt 85 residence halls coun cil rhc president affirmed this opin ion according to solt one of the problems is that residence halls don't have the same type of cohesiveness built into their system that fraternities and sororities do ' according to heidi stegmueller 85 panhellenic council panhel president what class b&w photo by brant matthews freshmen jenny fetherston laura vadeika laurie car berry and marcie moskow took advantage of the first rays of sun last week this sight will soon become a common one as students shun their studies m favor of fun m the sun facilities services detail plans for major renovations by suzette stoddard time schedules and specific plans for facility moves and renovations are being structured m the facilities services office the three main projects concern facilities m the super mart exten sion packard lab west and the alumni memorial building super mart to be hub super mart is designed to be the main entrance to the campus from the north and hopefully a hub of campus activity according to anthony corallo director of facilities servi ces and physical planning there will be a culdesac m line with new street and off morton street corallo explained where visitors can drive around to look at maps or to drop their cars off m park ing lots and walk up through the build ing to a plaza it will be a total orientation point the plaza will be located on the south side of the building with seating and a large planted area he explained we hope this will become a focal point around which other buildings can evolve to nail down the new campus he said the new facility of mart is 80,000 square feet 60,000 of which will be - used for library functions the 20,000 square feet below ground will be used for the lehigh university computing center and administrative systems office-use corallo said the anticipated completion date is the summer of 1985 but for certain parts of the building corallo said that the date is sooner by the beginning of the fall of 1984 portions of the first level and second level will be com pleted the computer center and the offices below ground will move into the building m november-december of 1984 and be m operation for the start of the spring semester corallo said the major 300,000-350,000 book move from linderman library will take place during the following summer he added the move of books from linderman to mart will ' make linderman a truly humanities library and will free up seminar space and space for special collections corallo said edpol eyes new standards to satisfy prerequisite need by beau stacom the faculty committee on educa tional policy edpol has proposed to the full faculty that the lowest grade that can be used to satisfy a prerequisite requirement is a c edpol's grades subcommittee reviewed the grades sec tion of procedures regulations and requirements pr&r the university policy book and recommended the proposal the proposal states that a student who wishes to use a course to fill a pre requisite requirement and receives a d d or d must either repeat the course until he or she receives a c or obtain a waiver of prerequisite to enroll m subsequent courses that require that one as a prerequisite according to sheldon radin professor of physics and edpol grades sub committee chairman the proposal is a result of problems with clarity and inter pretation of the current d grade definition d is defined to mean that the student has achieved a level of proficiency such that he or she can apply the course toward graduation but m the estimate of the teacher has not acquired adequate proficiency to take a course that has this course as a prerequisite according to pr&r the present rule is ambiguous effec tively what it says is that you are recom mended not to use a d grade m a course that is a prerequisite for another course radin said however the rule doesn't go on to say that the student can't go on with a d grade as it does with an f so m other words the student can go on with a d grade but is advised not to do so efforts underway to replace cable in campus houses with twin county by mike coryell & kathi moore preliminary efforts are being made to get twin county cable tv to replace ser vice electric cable tv as the cable com pany for the university rich arad jones director of the fraternity management association fma , explained we have asked twin county to put m a proposal jones said ■' we tried a cou ple of years ago but there were some bureaucratic problems so nothing came of it jones said that he will meet today with a twin county sales representative susan yee to discuss the company's proposal yee stressed that negotiations are just m the beginning stages we are m the process of figuring out the most economic package for lehigh she said jones explained that the move toward twin county results from service elect rics refusal to make compromises service electric doesn't care whether we do business with them or not every problem has been handled the same way if we don't like it tough they are expensive ansj^hey don't compromise we can't do business this way it's about time for a new firm currently service electric is working at the university undoing the illegal connections attached to their cable lines • harold haas operations manager at service electric m charge of accounts with the university said that when uni versity students connect illegal wires to cable lines it results m damage to the cables and affects the service given to other customers haas guessed that the unhooking of illegal wires has something to do with the current discontent jones argued that fraternity houses had to put down a 200 deposit to that they could have a box which houses the cable controls and 400 for hbo and prism the equipment is only worth about 50 so if the boxes were stolen the fraterni ties were out 200 plus they had to put up 200 more jones said they service electric were making a fortune off us jones said adding that twin county has the same channels as service elect ric plus they have some added attrac tions for the houses see changes page 9 see university page 5 see campus page 9 see renovations page 4
