by lori soderlind chadwick valu-line a new long distance telephone service developed l>y a university alumus may help university fraternities overcome phone service problems richard jones director of the fraternity management association fma said chad paul 76 president of chad wick telephone discussed his long distance calling system with frater nity treasurers at their meeting last week according to paul the presen tation was directed to treasurers in an effort to help determine their options and pros and cons of a system inde pendent of american telephone and telegraph at&t . since the meet ing several houses have already expressed interest in the system he said telephone services typically pres ent several problems to fraternities jones said fraternities spend as much as 65-$7o a month on at&t equipment rental charges long distance service rates which are added to the rental charge are high jones noted he said that fraternities have relatively no way to protect themselves from unauthorized callers especially the notorious party caller who frequently use house phones to place long-distance calls and then charge them to the fra ternity consequently fraternities lose 50 100 each month in unclaimed long-distance phone calls he said with the at&t system virtu ally anyone can pick up the phone and place a toll call jones added because chadwick's valu-line is computerized and designed to pre vent the possibility of phone bill frauds with every individual having their own number to get into the sys tem jones said the system is potent ially one of the most dynamic see fraternities page 10 new phone system offered to save fraternities money able to play spring-ball gara took the course at the moravian intersession and received a b upon his return at the beginning of the spring semester he was informed by wagner that the grade would not be computed into his gpa until the end of this semester contrary to what gara and his coach had expected this left him on probation and unable to play baseball i approved the course at moravian but i don't remember to the best of my knowledge ever saying that it would clear him from probationary status many students go to moravian during the year to pick up needed credits i was under the impression that he was inter ested in picking up credits to satisfy the ncaa national collegiate athletic association 24-credits in a year rule wagner explained see gara page 12 a top university baseball player on academic probation since the beginning of the year spent 500 and his winter break taking an intersession course at moravian college under the impression he got from registrar james wagner that he would be able to play this semes ter if he did so the player brian gara 86 received a high enough grade in the intersession course to raise his grade-point average gpa above the university minimum however since university policy states that the cumulative average is com puted at the end of each semester and the summer session but states nothing about the intersession program wagner did not compute gara's gpa prior to the spring semester gara therefore remains on probation and unable to play baseball by ron ticho gara was informed of his probationary status by stan schultz head coach of the baseball team on jan 3 upon receipt of this message gara and his parents drove to the university in an effort to see if there was a way to resolve the situation they met with schultz and set up a meeting with wagner both schultz and gara proposed to wagner that he take a course under the intersession pro gram the course was in american literature and was for four credits gara in conjunction with his adviser nancy fulford health professions coor dinator figured out that if he were to receive a b or above in the course that his grade-point average would meet uni versity requirements according to schultz at first the prop osal of taking a moravian course was met with a lot of disagreement on the new social codes reviewed by fraternities living groups by janis barney a statement of social standards to replace the social regulations imposed in 1981 has been approved by every frater nity and sorority and is currently being reviewed by living groups in the resi dence halls according to marshall wen rich 85 interfraternity council ifc president the new social standards will not be administrative but student run according to tom wheeler 85 co chairman of the forum xiv social poli cies subcommittee the 1981 social regulations included the limitation of organizations to three open parties per semester the time lim itation on weekday pub nights and the cancellation of greek week the subcommittee and then the cam pus life committee of the forum must approve the new social standards before they are presented to the forum at its april 10 meeting the forum will be approving the process and the state ment of responsibility rather than a bunch of rules that reduce us to third graders wenrich said the resolution would give the forum alone the power to attack problems and to amend and revise the standards wenrich said what we're asking them the administration to do is throw the ball back to our court wenrich noted that some students hold the misconception that the administra tion is against us when they are on our side he added that students fear that by opening ourselves up if we screwed up the administration would be setting us up for a bigger fall and impose even stricter regulations if the standards which if approved will be effective for a two-year trial period are approved by the forum they would be presented to the board of trus tees at its october meeting wenrich said he feels that it will be difficult to docu ment the students willingness to support the standards in a way that will convince the trustees to approve them see social page 6 athlete remains on probation despite efforts part of wagner gara is thought to be the first student to attempt to be removed from academic probation through the intersession program he claimed i could tell that he didn ' t like the idea , and i was afraid he might not approve the course gara the sophomore pitch ing ace who compiled a 7-2 record last season explained i asked to speak to him alone and i explained to him that i wanted to play baseball for a living and that it would really hurt if i missed this year he then gave in and said that he would approve the course as long as i wouldn't overload gara said he isn't overloading since he took four credits over the winter and is taking 12 now all i know
