bedding down b&w photo by rob sternlieb four chi psi brothers exceed the speed limit as their bed heads for the finishing line during friday's bed races the afternoon's activities were marred when the first bed down the hill plowed into a group of spectators sending two to the hospital increase in fraternity damage termed alarming editor's note this is the last of a two part series on fraternity rriaintenance by michael melley there has been a definite increase in the amount of student damages reported in fraternity houses this year according to both fraternity services manager steve smith and maintenance supervi sor rod yerk it's an alarming trend yerk said the residents of the houses are not policing the actions of other peo ple in the house as an example of the student damage problem yerk said a brother of one of the houses put a pot of cooking oil on a stove during the last vacation and left the oil caught fire and started a small kitchen fire our system has tried to make them responsible for their actions he said roy keller 85 president of beta theta pi fraternity said he is very upset about some renovations done in his house recently according to keller workmen came in and replaced some of the doors in the house some of the doors were broken others were unnecessary and had only small chips in them he explained keller said the repair was filed as student damage and one of the workmen told him the new doors would cost the house about 200 a piece i don't think they are overcharging us he explained they are unnecessarily charging us for some of the work every little thing is now student dam age he added scott bear 85 of sigma chi fraternity said that maintenance workers automatically assume that necessary repairs are the result of stu dent damage student damage billed to the house according to smith any work order that is not the result of ' normal wear and tear is considered student damage and the repair costs are billed back to the house smith said there is often controv ersy over whether damage should or - should not be billed as student damage if we feel confident that it is damage caused currently he said the damage see student page 5 new social policy process different from other schools by stuart silberman the university's new social policy pro cess based on a statement of social behavior and charges the students with collective responsibility for the members of their living group is a sys tem considerably different from that at some of the institutions to which the uni versity compares itself unlike the university whose new pro cess consists of a type of social honor code three of its peer institutions buck nell university lafayette college and princeton university have social regu latory policies controlled by their adminsitrations bucknell has a very tough set of social regulations there are no alcohol related activities permitted sunday through thursday nights according to associate director of residence life gerald com merford who is responsible for resi dence halls and fraternities at bucknell in addition he said there can be no events involving live or recorded music during the week we don't have such things as pub nites commerford said he added that during the period of fraternity rush the fraternities are allowed to hold events from 10 p.m to 1 a.m on monday and wednesday nights which can include alcohol fraternities once self-regulated thefise regulations were created by the administration about four or five years ago commerford said before that in a system similar to that adopted by lehigh each fraternity and residence hall would establish their own guide lines for running social events the administration however found that the fraternities were not abiding by their own committment and found it necessary to create the regulations commerford added the regulations which do not allow weeknight parties were created by a committee made up of both students and faculty about three years ago and since that time student groups have petiti oned for the regulations to be over turned he said explaining that each time a petition comes up the faculty decision is to not overturn them the reasoning is that mid-week see social page 7 by howard goldstein and hugh simpson despite some accidents and incidents this year's spring fest-greek week activities were run very smoothly according to eugene dax campus police chief this weekend was great he said it was one of the best in regard to incidents one accident which injured two women occurred at friday's bed races according to robert cohen associate dean of students the first bed which belonged to theta zi fraternity to start the race struck a university student and a non-university woman who were among the crowd which had not yet cleared out of the road the university student suffered a broken nose while the other woman suf fered a broken tibia cohen said both see week's page 4 dont tell jonl pasko 87 left or diane dewitt 87 to break a leg unfortunately alpha gam's pledges did not fare too well in thursday's obstacle course at sayre park as baw photo by rob sternlieb psi u and dg took first place in the event but it was alpha sig and dg.who were victorious overall at the end of this year's greek week competition vol 95 — no 48 bethlehem pa tuesday may 1 1964 215 861-4184 lehigh university brown and white despite incidents week of activities deemed successful
