favorite of lehigh un dergraduates to win today's presidential election according to a telephone poll conducted by the brown and white last week of those registered voters polled 227 students supported reagan or 77 percent while democratic candidate walter mondale could only muster 36 supporters or 12 percent eight percent of registered voters said they were undecided who to vote for and less than one percent reported they were supporting other candidates five percent said they were not voting of the registered voters polled 98 percent believed reagan will be re elected by a landslide and although mondale had received some voter support no students said they thought he would win two percent said they were unsure of the outcome the b'&w poll was conducted by calling students randomly selected from a list of all undergraduates provided by the registrar as is the case with all random samples sampling error and possible bias resulting from non-response makes the poll ap proximately representative of the population in all 367 students were polled with 80 percent or 294 reporting that they had registered to vote in today's election the lehigh poll results sharply contrasted a series of polls conducted at six ivy league schools the university of pennsylvania which organized the poll was the only school supporting the president but only by a slim margin 47 to 46 harvard university showed the strongest support for mondale with the challenger leading the incumbent by 39 percentage points 64 to 25 with yale university following close behind supporting mondale by 33 percentage points over the president the other ivy league schools — princeton cornell brown and columbia all supported mondale but not as strongly as harvard and yale dartmouth was expected to participate in the poll but did not report lafayette plans underway by michele levin a lehigh committee has been set up as a coun terpart committee with lafayette college to coor dinate lafayette weekend nov 16-18 according to dean of students john smeaton.the lehigh committee consists of student leaders represent ing living groups and campus organizations as well as members of the administration the goals of the committee are to facilitate trnsportation so fewer fans must drive to the game to generate more spirit and to have more involvement from the overall lehigh community explained smeaton we want to increase enthu siasm and generate good sportsmanship both on and off the field without fights or other problems as in past years the hill will be closed to all vehi cles there will be ushers at the game and police men with dogs as well lynn miller vice president of the student activities council sac , explained the plans to expand on the bonfire-pep rally so that spirit will be increased and people stay longer the bonfire pep rally will be coordinated with the lehigh lafayette rugby game and miller is working on sponsoring a live band to perform in front of the field house and securing a beer truck as well of course the lehigh marching 97 will make their traditional appearance miller intends to increase emphasis on the banner contest to generate more spirit and enthu siasm for the game there is the possibility that the different living groups will hang their banners on lower campus so they are more visible she said as in past years kazoos will be distributed however there will be beer cups distributed instead of buttons this year continued millers suggestions had been made to move the use of precedent criticized by pete trumbore editor's note this is the third of a six-part series on the uni versity's disciplinary system focusing on contemporary criti cisms of the system specifi cally the use of precedent and the role of the case officer the handbood is there but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference social relations chairman and pi lambda phi fraternity adviser jame mcln tosh said while pi lam was awaiting a verdict on the appeal of a discipline committee deci sion several weeks ago the system is not legalistic it's not run from a legalistic basis one of the issues that drew the most comment in the pi lam case was the use of some sort of precedent in the sanctioning of the fraternity and its general role in the working of the hear ing panel obviously former dean of students william quay said it's a system of precedent in a system based on precedent it would follow that once a group or individual had been found guilty of a given violation and sanctions anyone else who committed the same infraciton would find themselves facing a similar if not identical punishment edwin kay former disci pline committee chairman and psychology professor however would tend to disagree with quay's opinion if you look back at the record of decisions in the past you would be very hardpressed to make any sense at all in the judgments as to whether there was any consis tency in those judgments kay charged even when the discipline committee was composed of only five permanent members and the dean of students served as chairman hearing every case kay claimed that prece dent never played a part in the decision they didn't have a backtrack b&w photo a campus planning group is pres ently formulating plans aimed at keeping past confrontations with police like the one above at a minimum and preventing irres ponsible
