columbia prof walter t stace of princeton university will speak on the philosophy of democracy at 8 p m friday in packard auditorium this lecture is open to the general public as well as to students professor stace is sponsored by the robert w blake society hon orary philosophical society in con junction with the faculty lectures committee this will be the second speech of a series concerning isms originally scheduled to in clude a third on communism born in britain dr stace a professor of philos ophy was born and educated in the british isles before coming to princeton in 1932 he was in the british civil service in ceylon for 22 years he is the author of sev eral books dealing with philosophy which include critical history of greek philosophy philosophy of hegel meaning of beauty and theory of knowledge and exist ence the members of the society will meet with dr stace at 4 p m friday in the faculty room of drown hall following the meet ing the executive committee of the society and dr stace will eat in the drown hall cafeteria finalists to meet in deciding debate the hughes-weiss musical com edy on which mustard and cheese cancelled production last month will be presented on the evening of april 28 in the auditorium of the beethoven maennerchor it was announced saturday the show which deals humor ously with the history of lehigh has been considerably shortened and simplified and will make use of a cast drawn both from the university student body and the maennerchor membership try outs for the cast have been called for 7:30 p m thursday at the maennerchor the show in its new form will be directed by david c hughes 39 the composer of the score al though we were unable to round up a satisfactory cast to properly produce the full show hughes said we should not have too much difficulty in getting together a group that will be able to swing this abridged version comedy is shortened eric weiss 39 author of the ori ginal show said that the comedy retained its original humor even in the shortened version i took no part in the cutting of the script he said and my work is going to keep me from helping with the production but i am pleased with the condensation that dave has made and i hope that the show goes over in a big way any lehigh men with talents along musical lines will be wel come at the cast try-outs on thurs day hughes said after all it can't be a real lehigh show unless plenty of lehigh men take part in it moyer arsove to address meeting of chess club the interfraternity council has assumed the responsibility of choosing a date in the spring for the 1940 fall houseparty and sen ior prom it was announced last night by walter s russell ch e 41 president following a meeting of the council in drown hall this plan of choosing the date far ahead of time will become a permanent feature of the council's activities and is designed to elim inate the confusion which has often resulted due to conflicting dates according to russell it will allow the committee in charge a free rein from the beginning of school in september the plan re sulted from a suggestion by dean wray h congdon tentative date chosen a purely tentative date has been chosen on oct 25-27 the week end of the hampton-sydney foot ball game arrangements will be definitely settled in the near fu ture according to russell plans for cooperative coal buy ing by lehigh fraternities as pre sented to the council by a coal company representative a dollar per ton was offered if enough fra ternities take up his offer the plan will enable the coal company to operate during the summer months and to supply the contract ing houses with their winter coal the plan was referred to the various house meetings a report will be called for from each rep resentative at the safety council he also nolds membership in various committees of the na tional safety council 20-foot pole to be used three men will assist hasskarl in demonstrating his lecture they are c w seniors this morning the pennsylvania rail road's representative interviewed electrical engineers over fifty couples were present at the second arcadia dance last friday evening from 9 o'clock un til
