th e brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pennsylvania vol 96 no 1 tuesday september 4 1984 215 861-4184 leave it to weaver b&w pholo by adam sfvtll olympic freestyle wrestling gold medalist and 1983 lehigh alumnus bobby weaver psyches up the class of 1988 and president peter likins at last wed nesday's freshman rally held in grace hall social policy proposal ready for forum ok by janis barney a proposal to suspend the current social regulations — in effect since the fall of 1981 — is being drafted by the summer ad hoc social policy committee the committee was appointed by forum xv as an advisory com mittee to the dean of students and met several times during the summer the committee is preparing a report and resolution which will be sent to various forum committees if passed it will be sent to the full meeting of the forum on september 20 the proposal must be approved by the board of trustees in october before going into effect it will be presented to the trustees by president peter likins • senior jeff brotman forum co-chairman likened the proposed resolutions to a constitution after it has been ratified he said amendments or standards can be passed on a case-by-case basis as they are needed the aim brotman said is to get the constitution ratified the report explains why the board of trustees should give us ratification the resolutions have not been finalized by the committee as they stand now they would suspend social regulations which were imposed by the trustees as a result of events which occurred on campus in the spring of 1981 concern was expressed by several faculty members at a commit tee meeting last tuesday that the void which will occur between the time that the old rules are suspended and new ones are proposed by the forum will be chaotic olympic champion weaver everything fell into place by rich simon when 1983 lehigh graduate bobby weaver took to the mats for the freestyle wrestling portion of the 1984 olympic games in los angeles he made reality out of an eight-year dream by winning an olympic gold medal weaver wrestled with incredible determination disposing of his three opponents all in the first round the road to the gold medal was not an easy one for weaver after qualifying for the 1980 olympic games weaver had to suffer along with the rest of the ameri can athletes as the united states boycot ted the moscow games according to weaver the biggest thrill about winning the gold in i,os angeles was that all of the pressure and tension that had been building up for four years was finally over and that i achieved the ultimate in exposure - ' weaver also liked the fact that every thing finally fell into place and that he was able to share the excitement of his victory with his entire family weaver added that this was the first meeting of any kind when the whole family was there weaver put his victory into perspec tive by saying that the birth of his son bobby jr less than a year ago was the best thing that ever happened in his life he added that his primary goal at the present time is to be a successful family member and businessman that goal he continued will be everlasting weavers path to the gold started in may at the qualify ing trials in lowa city at those trials he needed to finish in one of the top six spots to advance to the final trials he qualified second losing only to paul widerman of the hawkeye club the engineer would not be denied his chance for an olympic gold however as he defeated widerman and the rest of the competition in his weight class at the final trials at grand valley state college in allendale michigan in june to win the starting spot at 105.5 pounds weaver described the fans in los angeles as really great adding that they were very loud and receptive to all of the matches especially those in which a member of the u.s team was participating i felt really nervous outside the arena but when i got out on the mat the crowds pumped me up and i went to town he explained according to weaver winning a gold medal takes a lot of hard work but you've got to know in your mind that you've done everything you could to pre pare he complimented u.s coach dan gable who is also the coach of colle giate champion university of lowa as a great motivator he said however that you've got to know you're prepared or that motivation won't help the most common question asked of 1984 olympians was whether they felt that their medals were tainted because the communist countries did not com pete in los angeles weaver answered by saying 1 worked my buit off to make the team and win and it docsn t mean any less because the communists weren't there it is iheir loss people 50 ytnn down the line won't ask whether the rus sians were there they will just see the gold medal in my mind there is no one who could have entered the tournament who would have beaten me ' ' weaver has a superb record against the russians to support that claim b&w greets dean smeaton by pete trumbore editor's note the following is a par uul transcript ol an august 27 conver sation the biown & white had with new dean of students john smeaton who look over for william quay this summer it is the first of a two-part series b&w can you tell us a little about yourself smeaton i have a wife patricia pat who is a former math teacher and a baby daughter katherine who is 15 months old b&w what about your back ground smeaton i grew up in western new york in the finger lakes area a town called canandaigua i did my undergraduate work at the state uni versity of new york suny in rock port and earned a bs in psychology i think it was during that time that i started getting an idea of the profes sion that i was interested in as an undergraduate i served as resident advisor in the residence halls for three years my freshman sopho john smeaton b&w photo b v john treichleri see social page 7 see meetin page 9 see.wfavfr page 14
