th e brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pennsylvania vol 96 — no 48 tuesday april 30 1985 215 861-4181 1 0 caught in campus crawl by amy charles although no major incidents disrupted greek week three small groups of people attempted campus crawls with 10 getting caught including two pi lambda phi brothers according to dean of students john smeaton the others involved were five alumni and three high school students one of president peter likin's main concerns had been that there would be a wide-spread campus crawl and he said he was relieved to find only one small group was caught doing it smeaton said no decisions have been made about what disciplinary actions will be taken if any pi lam's toga banner which used the ethiopian famine to display discontent with its no-alcohol sanction also offended several students and faculty in the greeker-eating contest wednesday participants pelted the crowd with greekers while the onlookers returned fire with cups of beer at the bed races friday several beds crashed and there was at least one minor collision with pedestrians however these incidents were only a small part of greek week chi psi aopi greek winners chi psi and aopi captured the spirit of greek com petition by gaining the most points during greek week activities they received plaques from the tally-ho tavern and a similar plaque will be displayed in the ho com memorating each year's overall greek week winners greek week event winners were delta phi and gamma phi beta for the toga race beta theta pi and kappa alpha theta for greeker eating sigma nu and alpha omicron pi for the bed race greek week festivities also included several charitable activities such as the theta xi's airband contest proceeds which benefitted muscular sclerosis the steckbeck run with 150 entries raised money for the bethlehem boys club and ifc softball tournament proceeds went to the ifc scholarship fund bedding down b&w pholo by adam sevil students pulled out the shorts and t-shirts friday celebrating the warm weather and the main event of greek week the bed races even a fraternity mascot got into the action as alpha omicron pi pushed their bed to victory sigma nu was the fraternity winner see greek week photo spread — page 6-7 lu coed raped a 21 year-old lehigh university student was raped early sunday morning as she walked home from a party ac cording to bethlehem police the attack took place near the corner of carlton avenue and summit street only a block from the alumni memorial building and less than two blocks from her off campus apartment there have been no arrests in the case and no in formation on potential suspects is yet available dean of students john smeaton said there is no apparent con nection between the incident and greek week smeaton did not want to disclose any further in formation while bethlehem police conduct their in vestigation campus police chief eugene dax said his office had been contacted by bethlehem police and was told that a student had been attacked but they supplied him with no other details the university is not releasing the name of the woman and no further details are known at this time uc study lounge considered by alicia orr plans for an all-night study lounge in the uc will be finalized this week according to forum xv co-chairman jeff brotman the informal decision was reached last wednesday by associate dean of students jennifer volchko director of auxiliary services richard metz director of facilities services patricia chase amd brotman who has been the student representative for the all-night study areas issue the proposed study area consists of four meeting rooms on the fourth floor of the uc which would accommodate 30-50 students at once the total facility would be no less than the former mart facility brotman said referring to the study lounge in the lower level of mart library which was closed when the addition to the library was built the all-night study lounge in neville hall was closed last month because of security and vandalism problems the uc facility will most likely open to students on the last day of classes and remain open as long as it is needed brotman said the closing date depends on the number of students occupying the lounge if there are five students using the rooms and those five students finish their exams it might be closed then he said funding for monitoring the study area is the only remaining question according to brot man he added that funding will come from several sources and could be considerable to provide enough security to discourage van dalism ib&w pholo by bill wilsout english professor peter beidler was recently presented with a plaque from reader's digest for his article why i teach an account of the joys of teaching in the magazine's may issue see events page 5 see greek page 5
