t he brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pennsylvania vol 96 — no 46 tuesday april 23 1985 215 861-4181 ato pledges found guilty of theft by mark heinze sixteen alpha tau omega fraternity pledges were found guilty last thursday of theft and possession of stolen property valued at over 1 600 the thefts occurred on the weekend of march 23 and 24 when ato pledges and four brothers travelled to an ato chapter at cornell university as part of a pledge trip most of the items stolen were of modest value including clothing cash small appliances and portable stereos but their combined value was set at over 1,600 when he was informed that the ato president at cornell suspected the pledges of stealing articles from their house and various dorms lehigh ato president chris brumbach immediately called an emergency house meeting and instructed the pledges to bring the stolen objects to the house and leave them with him later that evening he contacted campus police investigator edward shupp and informed him of the thefts expressing an interest m returning the items to cornell that evening by car shupp instructed brumbach that it was better to wait until he con tacted the cornell police to see if some arrangement could be made for the return of the property because the cost of extradition to new york would far exceed the value of the items the cornell police agreed to drop all charges if everything was returned on march 29 brumbach along with dean of students john smeaton and ato's national organization drafted a statement explaining ato's official position on the thefts and how the house planned to discipline its pledges the letter contained five main points first it was made clear that ato m no way condoned or planned the thefts second each pledge would be required to work 10 hours of clean-up for greek week third no pledge would be allowed to attend any parties at ato or any other fraternity for the rest of the semester fourth each pledge must participate m a coun selling program with ato adviser father richard schware finally the initiation of the pledges will be con tingent upon the compliance with the four sanctions in addition to the house-imposed sanctions the panel hearing the more severe cases required the pledges to draft a letter of apology to the student bodies of both lehigh and cornell required them to raise 1,627 for victims compensation programs m bethlehem and ithaca new york further the pledges may not live m ato's house during the next two semesters the defendants m the less severe cases are required to write a similar letter of apology organize and complete a service project at cornell and to com plete four counselling sessions with schware greek week festivities begin with new opening ceremony by amy charles after january's bid day incidents involving alcohol abuse greek week will be seen as the true test of lehigh's social policy ac cording to interfraternity council ifc president howard goldstein there are some people who are very worried but most are just aware of the social policy hopefully people will have enough common sense to know that the administration won't put up with alcohol abuse goldstein said i hope that some people who don't care about themselves will consider how they affect everyone else a lot of people think that the administration faculty and people running greek week are just stressing the bad things like safety restrictions goldstein continued but the main thing is that greek week is for us to have a good time president peter likins officially started greek week yesterday with opening day ceremonies goldstein said the ceremony involved more faculty members and ad ministrators m greek week and clearly defined the beginning of the week the toga and banner procession followed likins speech with the toga race held afterward today at 4:30 p.m the panhellenic society is replacing their usual greek week spaghetti dinner with a dating game each house that enters the game receives 10 points and the winners get two extra points and dinner tomorrow the greeker and pie-eating contests will be held m beta theta pi fraternity's parking lot dean of students john smeaton said the eating contests were not entirely safe and goldstein contacted the health center to check on the risks involved m the eating contests according to the health center contestants could choke on the food as well as the common risk of vomiting smeaton asked goldstein to suggest changes m the contest to the ifc but the ifc voted to keep the contests the same health center personnel will attend the contests m case of emergency the real concern goldstein said was friday's bed race during last year's race a collision seriously injured several people so this year b&w pholo by brett lazar a presidential ball would be just another ball without these two as president peter likins and his wife pat share a dance at saturday's annual formal affair lehigh to build office research park by m artine costello editor the university has begun plans for a so-million office research and development park on 108 acres of land on schoenersville road m hanover township despite protests from many area residents the research park which rouse associates will finance design and construct will house approximately 21 buildings according to vice president for research joseph goldstein we plan to introduce a number of com panies to conduct research work consistent with what we do here at the university eventually the research would include joint projects between the university and companies at the park involving faculty students and researchers who may also teach courses yet homeowners have objected that the park is too big for the land and have cited a number of factors m the project which they feel will adversely affect the community at a recent board of supervisors meeting residents voiced grievances including the increase m traffic on the already congested schoenersville road as well as the noise from construction heavy trucks and overnight shifts further residents feel that the park would aesthetically alter the area and threaten the environment with toxic waste and underground storage of liquid chemicals which could affect the groundwater supply vice president and treasurer john woltjen disputed these charges stating that this will not be an industrial park ... the research will be high-tech he also said that there will be no heavy industry or underground storage containers and this will not be a three-shift operation
