t he ßrown and white lehigh university bethlehem pennsylvania vol 96 — no 40 tuesday march 26 1985 215 861-4184 instructor injured in whitaker fire by stuart silberman an accidental gasoline spill in whitaker lab was the cause of a small fire saturday af ternoon which sent chemical engineering instructor harvey stenger to st lukes hospital with first and second degree burns according to acting assistant fire chief raymond chernaskey chernaskey along with 10 other firemen responded after campus police officer craig stefko reported the fire stefko said that campus police received a call at their base around 5:08 p.m about the blaze according to stefko stenger was conducting an experiment involving gasoline in which he said he thought stenger was heating gasoline on a hot plate in a metal can stefko explained that when stenger went to lift the can off of the hot plate the handle broke spilling the gasoline onto the hot element causing it to ignite stenger while on campus yesterday could not be reached for comment when the fire was reported stefko went immediately to the laboratory you could smell the smoke when you went in the building he said stefko said that stenger had his shirt off because it had caught fire and that he was suffering from burns on his abdomen and hands stefko said he was told that the fire was out but an unidentified student said that there was a chance that chemicals might have been involved in the fire then stefko said he called the bethlehem fire department chernaskey said that he did not talk to stenger because when the firemen came stenger was either on his way chemical reaction b&w photo by adam sejel a gas fire sent cheme instructor harvey stenger to st luke's hospital saturday fire units responded to whitaker lab after campus police reported the fire sororities will rush upperclassmen by karen schoonover news editor panhellenic council panhel has voted to allow sororities to distribute bids to upperclass women in the fall according to stacey abernathy sorority adviser to the dean of students it's not a fall rush we'd like to call it fall pick-ups since it isn't struc tured she said invitations will be given to women during the spring for girls they the sororities really missed obviously it was popular because panhel did pass it jennifer moore panhel rush chairman said it's going to be a lot of work because there will be two initiations but you get more girls that you want and that's after all what we want abernathy emphasized that the social functions would be very laid back and that they would not be rush functions girls could be invited to parties dinner or ifcs if girls sorority want to go to a wrestling match the idea is to invite them along it will be very low-key we want it to have a low-profile and be very relaxed missy peters panhel vice rush chairman said it gives them a chance to get into a sorority sooner a chance to be greek sooner we just want to keep girls from going through formal rush again because most girls know which sorority they want after their first rush abernathy said for those who are still unsure which sorority they want or who do not receive a bid in the fall from a certain sorority abernathy said panhel encourages them to go through formal rush again it will also help juniors who usually have a difficult time getting a bid abernathy said she added that not only will the sorority feel better about giving a junior a fall bid but also the juniors will have two years in the well-trained b&w photo by steve switaj friday night's rhc almost summer dance marathon netted almost 2,000 for united cerebral palsey thirty started the 20-hour event with 40 more joining in the middle sixteen finished at around 6 p.m saturday see story page 3 stabler makes money thanks to fee system by gregg rogers over the past 12 months stabler arena has hosted 17 major shows and concerts without losing money on a single per formance comparing this years success with the last few years student , activities council sac concert chairman alan bluestine commented that this year was much better than last year according to bluestine the cyndi lauper concert last november drew the largest crowd so far this academic year with 5,900 people while bill cosby and dan fogelburg were not far behind john denver judas priest and reo speedwagon also performed but according to bluestine the scandal concert drew the smallest crowd with about 1,750 people in attendance see spill page 5 see panhel page 7 see promoters page 5 bonus new mascot discussed . . p 6 letter writers offer ideas for ruggers hammer hoyas 66*0 r ir b
