charles sigma alpha mv fraternity was placed on disciplinary probation wednesday by the interfraternity judiciary committee ijc for violating the social policy and recklessly endangering a pledge during their bid day party jan 26 the ijc heard three cases this week concerning the bid day incidents that sent four pledges to st luke's hospital for excessive alcohol abuse the ijc charged that the brothers of sammy sigma phi epsilon and lambda chi alpha fraternities failed to prevent their pledges from drinking irresponsibly sig ep and lambda chi pleaded not guilty to the charges m their hearings tuesday and thursday and sammy pleaded guilty m its hearing the ijc decided m all three cases that each fraternity must develop a program to make the brothers more aware of their responsibility to prevent excessive drinking to the point of creating a hazard to themselves coordinator of greek affairs michael boyd said the interfraternity council is taking the hearings very seriously everyone realizes that gosh this is a problem it all three houses were brought up on the same charges although sammy was the only one placed on disciplinary probation sammy was handed a more severe verdict than the other two fraternities because boyd said they took fewer proactive measures to protect their pledge after he drank excessively lambda chi and sig ep took pledges who had had too much to drink back to their dorms or asked them to stay overnight the two fraternities also stopped their hospital bound pledges from drinking after it was apparent that they had had too much and took them to the hospital when they realized how serious the pledges conditions were according to boyd sammy did none of these things sammy president brian okun was unavailable for comment according to boyd sammy's bar had no bartender that night and the brothers let pledges who had obviously drunk too much wander off into the night alone however the ijc felt that no restrictions on alcohol were necessary and that its decision was more m terms of a reprimand boyd said the question of restricting alcohol never even arose what we wanted out of the hearings was something educational boyd said we don't want the educational part of this to be undercut by punitive measures beta theta pi fraternity will go before the ijc on the same charges monday b&w photo by adam sevel the cos of laughter you alden cushman id checks party policies begin lafayette college fraternities have unanim ously denounced the new social regulations imposed on them by the lafayette administra tion but have reluctantly agreed to uphold them the presidents council which is similar to lehigh's interfraternity council composed of the presidents of the 15 fraternities and five sorori ties began this semester by expressing their dis satisfaction with certain provisions of the regulations we don't mind the 2 a.m shut off time for beer taps during the week delta upsilon presidet dom featherson said but we are not satisfied with the same rule for weekend parties we will try to enforce the rule but we don't approve of it according the thomas nelson editor m chief of the lafayette the university newspaper the 2 a.m curfew is working well during the week but on weekends it's not really being enforced nelson continued that the social regulations which were passed first by the faculty commit tee on residential life and then by the entire faculty were never brought before the presi dent's council or the rest of the student body paula frits assistant dean of student residence and activities acknowledged that the regula tions which also limit the fraternities to one alco holic pub night a week were passed without student approval but before we began drawing them up we gave the president's council the chance to come up with their own but they decided not to frits said they can't fault the process said herman kissiah dean of students at lafayette now that the regulations are m effect the col lege has instructed its security staff to observe and report how well the fraternities are abiding by them if we find that the fraternities are not enforcing the 2 a.m rule or are not checking for student ids then the appropriate disciplinary action will be taken frits said it's not all of the fraternities some are doing a very good job it's just a few that are not upholding the regulations kissiah expressed optimism about student sup port for the regulations but acknowledged that some student leaders are not completely satis fied with them they originally fought it but now they have said they will try to make it work we began the semester by distributing as much infor mation as possible about the regulations now we will just have to wait and see what happens we have decided to be stricter about checking for ids said featherstone hopefully the administration will notice and then possibly change the 2 a.m cut off rule for beer on weekends frits agreed that better checking for student ids would help improve the fraternities image it could possibly give them more negotiating power when we reassess the regulations next fall we will give them a chance m the fall but they should follow the regulations regardless internal sprinklers kill kitchen f i re at zetes by clare crabtree a grease fire which began m the kitchen of zeta psi fra ternity early wednesday morning was put out by the internal sprinkler system before it could rage out of control according to sopho more tom jost assistant house manager of zetes we don't really know exactly how it began jost said but it was a major fire the insides of the kitchen walls are very charred if it hadn't been put out when it was it could've spread to the living room he explained steve smith manager of auxiliary services has ordered the kitchen doors locked until the insurance company can investigate and prepare an estimate jost said until then the brothers will be eating m the uc cafeteria he said they expect the damages to be costly the funny thing was he added no one woke up b&w photo by ben leacei
