the brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pennsylvania vol % - no 29 alcohol abuses mar bid day parties likins social policy failed by chris palmeri the social policy was put to test this weekend and it failed miserably pres ident peter likins told forum xv tues day referring to the four pledges treated for alcohol overconsumption last weekend it was an absolute failure likins said two very young vulnerable men damn near lost their lives god knows how many didn't go to the hospital but should have likins acknowledged that these were not isolated incidents he considered this an example of collective abuse he said it is not going to go on if we have to turn our social policy upside down we will do it asked what course of action should be taken likins replied that student lead ers should be meeting and m accor dance with the social policy members of each fraternity should have met to dis cuss the matter brian okun president of sigma alpha mv said the fraternity held a meeting to discuss the issue i don't think anything like that will ever happen again he said likins and smeaton stated that the social policy was created by the students and that they had to live by it in his speech to the forum likins reminded everyone of the student's statement of responsibility which warns against irresponsible distribution of alcohol i didn't write the statement you did lik 4 pledges sent to st luke's by chris palmeri four freshmen were taken to st luke's hospital saturday night and early sunday morning as a result of excessive alcohol consumption accord ing to dean of students john smeaton a pledge of sigma alpha mv fraternity was found on the hill by campus police at about 9 p.m and taken to st luke's according to the campus police report he had not been wearing a coat and was treated for hypothermia exposure and alcohol intoxication he was relesed at about 1 a.m at 3 31 a.m an associate member of lambda chi alpha fraternity was admit ted to the hospital and treated for a hair line fracture of the skull apparently suffered from a fall while intoxicated two other pledges of sigma phi epsilon and beta theta pi fraternities were also admitted to the hospital for alcohol intoxication one student com plained of chest pains apparently alco hol related the other was vomiting profusely both were taken to the hospi tal by brothers of their houses all have now been released according to a st luke's spokesperson an attempt was made to contact all four fraternity presidents wednesday night but only one was available for com ment brian okun president of sigma alpha mv said he was at the hospital when their pledge was released but was unsure when the student left the frater nity house friday february l 1985 greek rush goes well as post rush begins by kristin irish nearly 393 men and 130 women accepted bids last weekend according to seniors brian bushey interfraternity council rush chairman and marcy salzman panhellenic council rush vice president rush ran very smoothly this year with virtually no problems salzman commented almost 260 women went through rush this year about 50 more than last year with an increase m the number of sophomores salzman attributed the increased interest to the addi tion of a sixth sorority and to the greater number of women at lehigh this year overall fraternity rush was successful bushey said it depended on the house some houses did really well while others still need a few more there is still ample opportunity for a freshman guy to join a house nearly 100 non-fraternity men attended a meeting for those inter ested m spring rush on tuesday evening m neville lounge the meeting enabled the students to sign their names on post-rush lists and to meet some brothers bid bonanza b&w pholo by donna sarisky fraternity and sorority bids were accepted last saturday as a new generation of greeks joined the house of their choice celebrations on the hill got out of hand that night however sending four pledges to the hospital one with a fractured skull libraries begin enforcing no food drink policy by amy charles lehigh's library system has a new weapon m the struggle for library maintenance under graduate students guarding the library entrances to make sure no food or drinks are brought inside and just m case someone man ages to sneak by the entrance guards library staff members patrol library beats listening for the rustle of cellophane or the hiss of carbonation that sig nals food or drink inside the library offenders will be asked to get rid of the food or drink or leave the library the libraries have always had a ban on food and beverages on the books according to sharon siegler assistant director of the fairchild-martindale library and computing center super mart in past years however the no-food rule was taken seriously library users who violated the rules were sneaky about it she said and because they were afraid of getting caught they tended to be more careful with their food and clean up after themselves more recently library users have been defying the rules much more openly in fact siegler said last semester a stu dent had a domino's pizza deli vered to the library students have been leaving their trash behind creating a problem for both other library users who want clean working space and library staff who have to clean up the garbage another problem with care less students according to siegler was that more soda and crumbs seeped into mart's car peting food m the carpet attracts insects including sil verfish which eat paper seigler said that mart needs regular fumigations because the library is too big for the staff to keep it constantly clean the library must be cleaned section by section giving garbage induced insect populations a chance to thrive and eat books siegler was also worried about the possibility of students spil ling soda on computer terminals 215 861-4181 the complaints of the library staff at linderman library were a major factor m the deci sion to reinforce the ban on food and beverages said linderman reference librarian christine roysden the effectiveness of the libraries new attempts to keep food out is debateable roysden said the people who shelve the books have noticed a definite improvement but linderman door guard stelios michaelides said he had not caught one per son m the library with food or soda and he thought
