show lehigh identification for admit tance to fraternity parties beginning jan 15 the interfraternity council ifc decided tuesday ifc president marshall wenrich said the measure first attemp ted four years ago was adopted because of problems in recent weeks with non-lehigh students and local residents on the hill students from other colleges and locals come to lehigh often without knowing any lehigh students for the fraternity parties he explained these people are not always the cause of problems on the hill but quickly join in and make matters worse wenrich said fraternity brothers will be required to check ids at the door under the policy wenrich said he hoped several brothers would be present to discourage undesirables from trying to enter the parties this is where the potential for problems lies he said in addition campus police will tighten security at the sayre park gates wenrich said campus police have been irresponsible regarding checking identification often he charged the police allow cars through the gates without even checking ids in response a campus police spokesman said ids are checked and that other than lehigh students only alumni with id are allowed through the gates wenrich said the new policy initially may be difficult to implement only because lehigh students do not normally carry ids to parties and non-lehigh students will not be used to being denied admission to parties this he said is because fraternity parties were so open he hoped the new policy will last long enough for people to adapt to it if this happens he continued the policy's long-term goal of limiting lehigh's social life to lehigh students will be accomplished wenrich said he hopes lehigh students will not be ' outraged by the new rule although it may be inconvenient to carry id he said it is for the students own good dean of students john smeaton is cooperating with the effort to implement the new policy by informing the lehigh community and other schools of the ifc's decision according to wenrich the jan 15 implementation date will give him time to do this smeaton called the decision an excellent move and he thought it would cut down substantially on disturbances university community at yesterday's campuswide christmas party in the uc's grace lounge several hundred students faculty and staff joined in the celebration lehigh takes action against cheating by lynn anne miller the disciplinary process at lehigh tries to educate students and show them that the university does not condone academic disho nesty according to robert cohen associate dean of students sentences handed out to the 28 students found guilty of academic dishonesty during the past six semester have included receiving an f for the assignment test or course disciplinary probation and disciplinary suspension the consequences of discipli nary probation are more severe for a student who receives financial aid because aid will be terminated during the probation period this in turn may force a student to withdraw from the university record on permanent file a record of the disciplinry action against the student is also placed in the student's permanent lehigh lafayette students protest by david lei(;ht and sheila ml \(. ii ik one hundred fifty students picketed lafayette college's administration building wednesday in opposion of social regulations passed by the faculty tues day which restrict pubnights where alco hol is served to one per week andy goyer editor in chief of the lalayette said he doubted whether the protest will help the situation the faculty decided to postpone its decision whether to restrict the serving of alcohol by student organizations from the sun day of each week at 2 a.m to the next friday at 4 p.m until next may which goyer said showed that the faculty is wil ling to compromise but students he said have given up on the faculty the president's council of social liv ing groups similar to lehigh's interfra ternity council ifc , support a motion passed providing for alternative bever ages food and the prohibition of grain alcohol but oppose the motions concern ing the banning of pubnights and the cur few on weekend parties the council stated in a recent letter to the lafayette college faculty that the proposed ban on pubnights will indeed rid us of some of the problems associated with them but at the same time it will be stripping away a substantial form of social interaction so vital to any college generally there is a fear among stu dents that the ban will eventually make lafayette a college in which students will leave campus to find their social life the council suggested in their letter that professors turn to their students for imput before the vote bill hennegan head of the presi dent's council and a member of delta tau delta fraternity at lafayette inter viewed before the policy was passed said he thought the measures may also bring about alienation between the houses since the ban will limit the opportunity for houses to interact he also said he feels that the administration is not fair because they are not giving the new proposals time to take hold he described lafayette as a really friendly campus and said he does not see positive results coming from the ban gregg spangler news editor of the lafayette stated that most students opposed the two measures and would opt for an atmosphere in which the student could be able to make individual choi ces while the administration is trying to widen the spectrum of college sponsored activities spangler said stu dents wanted these as an alternative not a substitute for the fraternities lafayette student julika englert said the faculty was acting unfair because they don't realize we study until about 11 p.m and then go out she added that on pubnights they don't think we study at all " however lafayette dean of students herman kassiah supports the measures and describes them as far ranging " he thinks the proposals are positive and will improve the quality of lafayette stu dents social life the policies approved by the faculty are 1 the current policies established by the presidents council of social living groups and the student government be regarded as college policy these are : a the serving of grain alcohol shall not be permitted b food must be provided as long as alcohol is being served c soft drinks or other non-alcoholic bever ages must be provided and have equal prominence and availability as long as alcohol is being served d any refer ence to alcohol in social event advertis ing is prohibited 2 effective january 1 1985 the number of pubnights at which alcohol may be served be reduced to one per week 3 no alcohol may be served after 2 a.m on those evenings when the serving of alcohol is
