examinations to be held at the beginning of next september announced registrar george b curtis applications for admission to the exams must be made be fore july 1 but the registrar suggests applying as soon as possible the special re-exams being given now on successive saturdays are only for men who were absent from the first sem ester finals due to a mistake on the part of hotel bethlehem authorities the date of the senior banquet has been advanced to monday march 4 instead of feb 26 as was previously announced a previous reservation for the ho tel facilities on the latter date had singing talent forces abandonment of original show three lehigh men were injured at 2:00 a m saturday when a car driven by j harry jacoby bus 42 crashed into a service pole on the william perm highway at the intersection of chestnut street in bethlehem richard f wood arts 42 and richard w mason eng 43 other occupants of the car were taken to st luke's hospital where wood has been under observation for a possible fracture of the skull and mason has been treated for eye lacerations jacoby suffered only minor injuries both patients resting comfortably hospital authorities announce that both patients are resting com fortably the condition of wood is much improved and there is little possibility of a fracture it was said mason probably will be re leased from the hospital before friday howard m williams bus 42 was the driver of a car which skid ded on the slippery car tracks just west of susquehanna street and crashed into a billboard on the cor ner of front and susquehanna streets allentown at 6:30 p m friday damage to the vehicle was estimated at 50 the car was own ed by robert caverly bus 41 due to the unexpected demand for tickets the concert by albert spalding noted american violinist will be presented friday evening in broughal high school instead of packer memorial chapel it was announced today by dr t edgar shields director of music and chairman of the cleaver memorial music foundation sponsoring the recital arrangements have already been made with the bethlehem school district to hold the concert in broughal high school said dr shields students take over 700 tickets more than 700 free tickets for lehigh university students and fa culty members have been distribu ted to date tickets will be avail able for patrons for the remainder of this week students be secured discusses austria rights stated further that he had planned to build the show around four men whose ability had been proved but that recently three of them found that for various reasons they were unable to take part the script and music for the show are finished and we will hold on to them in the hope that we may use them perhaps next year he said weiss blames casting eric weiss 39 author of the show said that it was a series of bad breaks in casting that led to the abandoment it means that a lot of work is wasted he said but i'd rather see the show not produced at all than produced poorly mr rights doesn't feel that the men he has to pick a cast from are good enough to do the thing and that's that dave hughes 39 composer for the show could not be reached for a statement but weiss said that hughes would feel very disap pointed about the cancellation dave and i have been working on the show for about two years off and on weiss said and we thought we had it shaped up the first prize in a writing contest for col lege undergraduates it was an nounced recently by the editors of the magazine contest manuscripts which must be from 2,000 to 3,000 words long are to deal with some current topic political economic social or literary in addition to the first prize there is a second prize of 50 and three other prizes of 10 each all manuscripts accepted for publica tion as well as the prize manu scripts will be paid for at regular new republic rates judges of the contest will be the editors of the new republic manuscripts are to be typewrit ten on one side of the paper only they are to be signed by a pseu donym accompanying the manu script is to be a sealed envelope containing the pseudonym the real name the address the college and the class of contestant contes ants must submit their entries on or before march 15 during the period of employ ment which will last from june 24 to august 30 1940 the contest winner will be expected to become a member of who left austria a year ago lived there when austria was annexed by germany mistakes in government man agement and lack of cooperation by the rest of europe were two important causes contributing to the annexation of austria he said he pointed out that the an nexation was a climax to a century of rivalry for the domination of the german states although austria's financial condition following the the first prize in a writing contest for col lege undergraduates it was an nounced recently by the editors of the magazine contest manuscripts which must be from 2,000 to 3,000 words long are to deal with some current topic political economic social or literary in addition to the first prize there is a second prize of 50 and three other prizes of 10 each all manuscripts accepted for publica tion as well as the prize manu scripts will be paid for at regular new republic rates judges of the contest will be the editors of the new republic manuscripts are to be typewrit ten on one side of the paper only they are to be signed by a pseu donym accompanying the manu script is to be a sealed envelope containing the pseudonym the real name the address the college and the class of contestant contes ants must submit their entries on or before march 15 during the period of employ ment which will last from june 24 to august 30 1940 the contest winner will be expected to become a member of the new republic unit of the book and magazine guild the salary is to be 25 a week besides car fare to and from the winner's home town or col lege club arranges to attend model assembly at hobart definite dates for the second series of typhoid shots to be given by the health service were an nounced today by dr raymond c bull director the dates are april 6 april 13 and april 20 it is important to note that the last of these dates april 20 falls during houseparty week end and should be avoided by those who anticipate guests on that day said dr bull the first series begins saturday feb 17 and will contin ue through feb 24 and march 2 all innoculations can be made during the first series dr bull emphasized the health service has the facilities the two series are merely for the convenience
