geraldine ferraro was met by cheering supporters and jeering opponents as she made a campaign stop at moravian college monday b&w pholo by rob sternliebi new committee aspires to bolster arts by beau stacom the committee on the arts humanities and social sciences has recently been named to identify new initiatives and appropriate emphases m the arts humanities and social sciences at lehigh according to a letter written by president peter likins to the faculty on sept 26 the committee named by likins m conjunction with arts college dean john hunt vice president of research joseph goldstein and graduate school dean jerry king is one of two committees that are outgrowths of the planning document drafted last year the planning document stresses the strengthening of academics at lehigh with an immediate emphasis on science for strategic reasons including the readily available opportunity for outside funding and the well substantiated view that efforts to strengthen the sciences will yield the greatest immediate benefit to the university as a whole to this end president likins named the committee on the university academic structure commonly known as the hittenger com mittee designed to address the possibilites for strengthening academics m the three colleges at lehigh while initial emphasis will be given to the natural sciences the planning document sets forth as part of its long term goals an equal emphasis on the arts humanities and social sciences with a specific eye toward looking for op portunity to expand m these areas this tenent then formed the basis for the newly formed committee on arts humanities and social sciences at the first meeting of the committee last monday likins said one of the concerns of the top administration at lehigh is that most of them are scientists and engineers and as such they do not think that they possess sufficient authority to speak on the subject of the arts humanities and social sciences as a result they are looking to the committee to help this situation government professor donald barry committee chairman said our charge is to make recommendations concerning areas of strength or great potential development m the arts science and human development areas barry feels that with the size and resources of lehigh university m these three areas we can't do everything we have to carefully choose where we put our resources and i hope to get a creative dialogue going as to what these areas will be he also stressed that the committee is exclusively a ferraro assails reagan by karen schoonover asst news editor this administration has the worst environmental record since sherman marched through georgia democratic vice presidential can didate geraldine ferraro declared m a speech at moravian college monday afternoon before a standing room only crowd of more than 2,500 the speech lasting only 15 minutes focused on the problem of toxic waste steel imports and the issue of nuclear arms control the federal government ferraro said has established a super fund for environmental protection but this administration hasn't spent it and now they've killed the reauthorization of the super fund if the president really loves this land why doesn't he protect it 0 if he believes m law and order why doesn't he take the polluters to court and not to lunch 0 " she asked referring to the strawn family of north whitehall township who complained of contaminents m their water she quoted the government's response letter the dangers of the chemicals m your water appears to have no short term effects that's the problem with this administraton their vision is limited to the short-term according to ferraro many programs including asbestos air and water pollution and coal resource research have been needlessly cut reagan cut the environmental protection agency epa research budget m half she added ferraro said she wanted to rebuild the epa and push for the public's right to know about toxic chemicals m their place of employment ferraro charged reagan with neglecting the steel industry more than 100 steel plants have closed this year and nearly 150,000 steel workers are currently unemployed she added four years ago he said he would not forget the steel workers he has president reagan's steel policy can be summed up m three words let it rust he tells the unemployed to check the want ads the problem is that they don't get all those foreign papers she said m re fer nee to steel imports ferraro said she would cut steel imports by 50 percent and invest m more modern plant equipment to make us the strongest industrial nation m the world she also criticized him for sup porting foreign but ignoring american unions i do support the labor union m poland but we should support the unions at home first our people are saying give us jobs regarding the issue of nuclear arms she said i want a president who has the will to stand up to the soviets but the wisdom to sit down with them and negotiate in closing she endorsed democratic congressional candidate jane wells schooley who is running against don ritter three-term republican in cumbent schooley who introduced ferraro said to the predominately democratic crowd gerry is not only a historical choice not only a democrat with universal appeal not only a competent fair-minded congresswoman but she is one of us among the audience was a group of about 50 emphatic reagan supporters who exchanged shouts with the mondale-ferraro crowd prior to ferraro's arrival the chant of four more years began an hour before she made her appearance the mondale supporters responded with shouts of three more weeks following her speech ferraro went to the allentown-bethlehem-easton airport for a press conference before flying on to a campaign stop m cleveland bishop tutu to speak at lehigh the winner of the 1984 nobel prize for peace anglican bishop des mond m.d tutu of south africa is scheduled to speak at lehigh m packer chapel on tuesday nov 13 bishop tutu was honored for his decades of leadership m opposing apartheid through non violent methods he has become south africa's chief moral spokesman against the
