13 capt maurer teaching new men rudiments of the game old men back brown and white team gains at will thru line and around the end score 41 to 0 bray speedy miler covers dis tance in fast time fancher wins second if fall practice means anything lehigh is going to have another banner year in lacrosse every day some thirty new men and sixteen members of last year's squad are working out on the upper field the old men all have at least two years experience behind them and aire well able to help out and coach the newcomers few of whom have any previous knowledge of the game ca'pt maurer has charge of practice and is assisted by jen ness captain of the 19 team who will play again this year red will greatly strengthen the team since his spectacular playing has been onie of the features of le highr's lacrosse teams for the past three years spanagle last year's goal keeper who played with navy is not in college and will be missed his playing ranked him as easily the best goal in college ranks his place however is ably filled by parker goal on the 19 team who played dlefenise last year among the navy men who are taking courses here is another lacrosse player an attack man with experi ence on navy teams continued on page three rifle club spectacular work of herrington and gulick feature of game savaria tallies twice a wonderful 60-yard run by cap tain herrington and a spectacular catch of a forward pass by gulick featured lehigh's slaughtering vic tory over rochester last saturday on taylor field by the score of 41 to 0 the brown and white team played excellent football and at only one time in the game did the new york staters every threaten to score this occasion was during the latter part of the second period when ro chester launched am aerial attack and almost took the lehiigh defense off its feet however lehigh brac ed and a score was prevented the brown and white line prov ed to be a stone wall to the roches ter rushes time and again sulli vani and hummel hit the line and each time they were held or a le hiigh man broke through and threw the man for a loss the figures of the actual gains and losses of the rochester team through the line give the new york team a loss of 13 yards during the afternoon in all attacks through the line roches ter made 27 yards while the back field men were thrown on other at tempts for 40 yards giving them a total loss of 13 yards they made a number 1 of gains by the forward continued on page four lehigh band rivalled only by lafa yette next saturday lehigh goes out to washington pa to play the big washington and jefferson team it is a well-known fact that w & j always develops onie of the finest football machines in the country during pitt's supremacy she was the only college which ever came near capturing the title and this year she is keeping up her reputa tion as yet she has not met very strong opposition but on next sat urday lehigh will have its chance against a rival of very similar if not greater power than west vir ginia on oct 30 the annual game with carnegie tech will be staged here at bethlehem on taylor field this team has thus far this year had a very unsuccessful season having been defeated overwhelm ingly in several of her games but each week has shown a steady im provement and once more she is re suming her old strength last year lehigih defeated her by the score of 20 to 0 and the year be fore that carnegie suffered a de feat at our hands hbwever le iiiigh always seema-te be-owe of their chief rivals and a very good game i's expected muhlenberg is the next oppon ent to be met on the sixth of no vember lafayette defeated her by the score of 28 to 0 and she has hlad a rather poor season so far but not an altogether bad one as she has shown a great deal of spirit and flight up to the last whistle in every game this is always true of a lehigh^muhllenberg clash as it is the secret ambition of every muh lewberg mlan to defeat her neigh bor and rival lehigh continued on page three announcement of fraternity pledges the chemical society held its first meeting of the 1920 season on oct 15 1920 in the chemistry lecture room the meeting open ed with an address by president m j rathbone who spoke on the many advantages of the society and urged more men to join particular ly the freshmen the turnout was not as good as was wished for and much better results are hoped for at the next meeting a very good program has been arranged which will be of . special interest to chemists and chemical engineers it will include many prominent chemists and each an authority on his particular line of work the president announced the ap pointment of the following com mittes : — program committee g r knerr j g widmyer and m j rathbone entertainment com mittee h g locke p v comey and r h billinger dr h m ulhran then address ed the society and spoke on the great importance of it and stated it was one of the most important function's of the college the hfesstf bers have the benefit of meeting the instructors and having different subjects presented by experts he encouraged the men who intend to be chemists to try for the different fellowships offered and the m h chandler prizes the chandler prizes are given in memory of dr chandler who was professor of chemistry at lehigh from 1871 to 1906 one hundred dollars is divided each year among the most efficient men in each class the winners of last years prizes will be announced in a short time continued on page three the speaker for the evening was dr j d smull formerly of the new jersey zinc co and the na tional lead co he spoke on the technical side of mineral pig ments and also how the various paints were compounded from the soccer team enters blue mt league the first real event of the cross country team took place on satur day afternoon the thirteen com petitors started from the upper athletic field at 3 30 sharp and set out over the st luke's course in the final tryouts for the lafayette rum the st luke's course cov ers a distance of about 5^4 miles winding up and down the hills over the river road between bethlehem and allentown during the halves of the foot ball game the tape was stretched between the goal posts at the far end of taylor field soon after ward bray lehigh's speedy mile runner of last year darted across the football field fiwis'hiing the course in 34.08 3-5 seconds and in excellent condition following him camie fancher and rodgers the above three winning the hand some medals given as a personal gift of coach morris kanaly coach kamaly spent sunday morning in going over the new lafayette cross country course and states that it far surpasses that of the wm penm highway of last year their course starts in front of the football field and passes through the surrounding country to the rear of the college covering a distance of nearly six miles and ending on march field below is the list of competitors and their time the first seven will the pulpit but left his charge during the war to engage in the field service work of the y m c a rev reed chose as the theme of his address trade marks he said in part the world is looking for men who have trade marks college is the place for you men to get your marks all through your college life you are making your trade mark you are preparing yourself for great tasks in the fu ture for service when you go out into the world to engage in the various activities of life the world will mot be very much concerned in knowing that you are a lehigh man or whether you were the honor man of your class but it wild want to know what your skill what your proficiency what your trade mark is in that particular line of work in which you are engaged if you can ishow the trade marks of ser vice in life the w r orld will respect you for they will know that you have done something rev reed then said that the three trade marks he considered essential in life were 1 disci pline 2 common sense 3 good sportsmanship or a sense of humor in speaking of the first essential , discipline he brought out the fact that every man is captain of his own soul he must learn to govern and discipline himself to resist those things that are detrimental to him and to do those things that are of use and service to him those men who have properly learned to train and discipline their minds are the ones who scriptures college dances stewards ass'n meets due to the non-commissioned of ficers of the r o t c being kept very busy at present getting lehigh's unit into shape no meet ing of the rifle club has been called presient bevan expects to call a meeting soon at which time the club will take up plans for the coming year shortly after this meeting is held the range in packer hall will be put into shape and it will 1 be open to members at all times compe tition will also be held in order to select the men which will make the team to represent lehigh against various college teams the prospects are bright for a very good team at lehigh this year as there are fourteen sharpshooters now in college from the lehigh limit at camp devens last summer two of these men having been se lected to attend camp perry for further training it is again desired to impress up on the students that membership in this club is not only limited to the miembers of the r o t c unit and it is expected that the club will have at least 400 members this year the dues are to be kept low and they will include the use of a rifle aimimunition and unlimited use of the range the leh'igh band is working hard to be recognized as the best of all colleges every monday and thurs day afternon about 54 men meet to rehearse however they are work ing under difficulties new instru ments and music are sadly needed to date only about 50 have been donated a very poor showing the town people are willing to help but the students backing is needed most of all at least 1000.00 is need as the band is 400 in debt and new sweaters ought to be bought in addition to other equip ment every man should help and give his donation to some member of the band it is hoped that the band might take several trips but at present it is unable to do so be cause of financial difficulties much credit is due joe recapito for the splendid showing of the band so far and although the philadelphia papers give lafayette credit for havinig the best college band at present with better equip ment lehigh's band can easily top our rivals » notice epitome competition at a meeting of the inter-fra ternity stewards association held last friday evening a a gross was re-elected as president-treas urer of the association for the com ing year other elections were h c bailey vice-president ; f m christman secretary anid an au diting committee consisting of c g carpenter and a w hicks miany of the fraternities failed to send a representative to this meet ing and it is desired that those fra ternities that want to take advan tage of the benefits derived from this association communicate at once with the president so that their name may be entered on the roll on saturday oct 30 the first college dance of the year will be held in drown hall at 8:30 p m the lehagb-carnegie game to be played that afternoon will be one of the best of the season and it is hoped that all of the students will celebrate by attendng this dance the music will be furnished by the unco cluib orchestra from allen town instead of the jazzland six orchestra as announced in the previous issue of the brown and white the committee headed by how ard bunn and assisted by a b magintnes arud r blake is work ing hard formulating plans for a series of super dances to take place every two or three weeks the second dance will be held on nov 13 after the penn sentatives all lehigh's games are to be played on taylor field and as the teams in the association com prise the crack amateur elevens of this vicinity they should furnish the brown and white squad good prac tice in preparation for the coming pennsylvania intercollegiate state soccer association games with but three weeks before the first intercollegiate association game with girard college at philadelphia capt eddie gon zales is drilling his squad of 42 men on the upper field four after noons a week owing to the r o t c having exclusive use of the field o n wednesday afternoon practice will hereafter be confined to monday tuesday thursday and friday afternoons those men who have reported for the squad are asked to report more regularly for practice cheering practice cheering practice will be held wednesday afternoon at 5 p m on taylor field this is the last chance the student body will have to give the team a send-off before the w & j game everyone is requested to be present between 1 30 and 3 30 wednes day afternon a representative of the brozvn and white will be in drown hall all unpaid subscrip tions should be settled at this time all those not paying them must good prac tice in preparation for the coming pennsylvania intercollegiate state soccer association games with but three weeks before the first intercollegiate association game with girard college at philadelphia capt eddie gon zales is drilling his squad of 42 men on the upper field four after noons a week owing to the r o t c having exclusive use of the field o n wednesday afternoon practice will hereafter be confined to monday tuesday thursday and friday afternoons those men who have reported for the squad are asked to report more regularly for practice cheering practice cheering practice will be held wednesday afternoon at 5 p m on taylor field this is the last chance the student body will have to give the team a send-off before the w & j game everyone is requested to be present between 1 30 and 3 30 wednes day afternon a representative of the brozvn and white will be in drown hall all unpaid subscrip tions should be settled at this time all those not paying them must
