humphrey announces resignation by rich simon provost arthur humphrey an nounced his resignation at yesterday's faculty meeting humprey will leave the office effective june 30 1986 and will become a full professor of chemical engineering it has been my intention to spend the last decade of my career in the classroom humphrey said in his announcement he called his years as provost both challenging and rewarding stimulating but sometimes frustrating he said he decided to resign now because the field of biotechnology is at the pinnacle of national interest and added it would be easier for the university to select a successor humphrey stated that he and president peter likins share similar philosophies of education and ad ministration which added to his success as provost following humphrey's an nouncement likins said the job of a provost is to continually improve the quality of the faculty members and that humphrey's service as provost has been remarkably successful a member of the university ad ministration since 1980 humphrey received his bachelor's and master's in chemical engineering from the university of idaho he completed his doctorate at columbia university and has a master's in food technology from mit humphrey has consulted extensively for corporations and has written several books in the area of biotechnology his specialty he is a member of the national academy of engineering and has received numerous honors and awards from his work prior to 1980 humphrey served as a professor of chemical engineering and dean of the school of engineering and physical sciences at the university of pennsylvania in other business at the faculty meeting a motion calling for better awareness of university policy on alcohol in the academic setting made by government chairman howard th eßrown and white lehigh university bethlehem pennsylvania vol 96 — no 50 tuesday may 7 1985 215 861-4181 a contestant watched his egg-carrying contraption fly through the air hoping it would withstand the jot when it hit the ground after being dropped from the top of fritz lab saturday the best entries in the egg drop contest were awarded with prizes du to face hazing charge by lori soderlind delta upsilon fraternity will face charges of public lewdness and hazing in a hearing today before the in terfraternity judicial committee uc according to du president robert almgren the charges were filed as a result of an april 25 incident in which house pledges attempted to take showers in women's residence halls mcclintic-marshall a-2 and a-3 during hell week the pledges take showers on a girl's hall as part of house initiation almgren explained at approximately 10:30 p.m the pledges stormed the bathroom on m&m a-2 where they were booted by the gryphon and forced to leave the hall nobody was naked yet almgren said the pledges then moved to the third floor and attempted to take their showers there apparently a lot of the girls from downstairs followed the pledges when they went to the third floor almgren explained noting that the incident drew a large crowd he said that campus police were called by one of the a-2 gryphons and arrived while the showers were in progress the gryphon refused to comment until after the hearing no arrests were made almgren said but the pledges were asked to disperse because they were loitering in response to the charges almgren said du will plead guilty to the charges of public lewdness because they were caught without clothes on but he called the hazing charges ridiculous the university says we created a situation where the pledges were mentally distressed almgren said but none of the pledges really cared and the girls certainly had no problems with this he said the above is a police sketch of a suspect in the early morning assault and rape of a lehigh university student last sunday in the 500 block of carlton avenue the man is described as being between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall with a slim build short-cropped hair and a thin mustache anyone with information is asked to call bethlehem police headquar ters police said the 21-year-old woman was struck on the head and suffered a cut that required five stitches courtesty-of the bethlehem globe times university restricts gay lecture publicity by martine costello under instructions from the dean of students office the office of public in formation opi restricted publicity for nationally-known gay rights activist barbara gittings claiming that her lecture on campus last week was primarily of student interest the bethlehem globe-times reported last week that opi had denied a staff reporter's request for information dean of students john smeaton explained that the program was designed and intended for the campus so publicity was targeted towards the students despite gittings national reputation vice president for student affairs marsha duncan said they had felt it was important to con centrate on our primary audience we're not here to educate the community that's not what i get paid for smeaton noted that our concern was the climate of the campus to provide an op portunity for us to hear about this issue and retiring registrar ready to relax by clare crabtree the tall distinguished-looking man stands at the desk in his office in the alumni memorial building talking on the phone he is dressed neatly and conservatively in a navy blue suit as he talks he scribbles furiously on a yellow legal pad the curtains are closed and the office is slightly dim books line the walls and the desk is sparse immaculate a long row of pens is laid out on the top of the desk in perfect order he hangs up the phone and steps forward authoritatively jim wagner he says stretching out his hand what's on your mind i heard you want to do a personality profile on me well i'm not sure if i like this psychological stuff 1 was a government major in college he says with the slight impression of a smile james wagner has been the registrar at lehigh university since 1949 and this june he will retire after 36 years i worked my way through school at get tysburg in the registrar's office from there i became the assistant registrar at temple i always tell students that the tougher we make it here for them easier it will be at the next place james h wagner registrar university he explains then in 1949 i was
